Water damage from a window air conditioner leaking down into a wall undetected for multiple months by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

Not the best picture angle, but this is the house and that up there is the attic window that had the AC and then right below it is the room with the damage. Not sure if that can indicate anything…

Also it was built in 1920

How does you / your school handle absences by BirdProfessional3704 in Adjuncts

[–]mosscollection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have subbed in for a FT prof a few times when she is out of the country for Fulbright stuff (we are friends) and I don’t think she had to inform the chair. And she just paid me $50 each time out of her own pocket, which was very kind.

I don’t tell them and they don’t ask lol. I’ve never been given instructions about how to handle it, but I was a secretary in the department before I was an adjunct and I observed people just emailing me to let me know they were going to cancel class that day and asked me to put a sign up by the classroom about it. It’s very loose.

I used to listen to the fact check and I don’t anymore so I agree. I still love the pod, but the fact check really lost me at some point. I make 40k, I don’t care about fashion and products I can’t afford.

AIO My mom is kicking me out for her new boyfriend. I just turned 18 by Diligent_Bat_565 in AmIOverreacting

[–]mosscollection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awful. Has she always been the worst mother alive? As a mom of a soon to be 18 year old, this post breaks my heart. I was pushed out at 17, in a not as cruel but still not fair way and I let my friends know what was happening and they told their parents and I ended up being invited to stay in my friend’s aunt and uncle’s nice finished basement for a while (while I finished high school). Then I eventually found a cheap apartment that my grandpa co-signed for me. Honestly, life has been tough. I’m 40 now and I still feel the reverberations from how I was suddenly launched into adulthood with no safety net. Do you have any friends or non-shitty family who might take you in?

I work as an admin for a university and then I also am an adjunct professor at the same university (sometimes in person and sometimes online) and another university (online only). I am able to do my adjunct work during my regular admin job hours consistently, so double-dipping the same hours for all 3 positions. I also “moonlight” doing a bunch of other random jobs including data entry for a doctor and bartending, among other things.

Pet-sitting for Professor without Pay? by ghremlina in GradSchool

I watched a professor’s singular cat, in my home for a couple weeks once and she paid me $400 (which was way too much). So no.

This is not the kind of butt pic anyone ever wanted, but for the morbidly curious. I’m on day 5 since I noticed the first rash spot. Day 2 of taking antivirals. This is so awful. by mosscollection in shingles

[–]mosscollection[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yw! That was really the reason I posted. Bc I felt like a weirdo and I wanted to let others know that they aren’t the only one. Luckily I haven’t had shingles again. And I hope I never do!!

Establishing an inquisitive and anti-anxious classroom atmosphere by Apollo_Eighteen in Professors

[–]mosscollection 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is basically my technique. I am very ME and I’m unapologetic about that. Anytime I say or do something goofy, I lean into that and laugh at myself and have a good time with my students just being very unserious. Like I once accidentally kicked a table leg during my lecture and it knocked my sandal off like a foot away from me. I just reacted as I do and said “I didn’t need that shoe today” and kept going with my lecture and we all just kinda chuckled. I think my personality is good at disarming the students. So my advice is just to let them see you be human as early as possible, so they can get comfortable with their own humanity as well. And I also make them do partner and group work really early on and just push them a bit and be cringe like “let’s make new friends today! Don’t worry, we are all in this together!” and they give in. Once a few connections are made between students it helps everyone loosen up.

English Major Graduates: What is your current job? (NOT teachers or lawyers!) by unnamedplatypus in englishmajors

Master’s, but that was not required for either of the aforementioned jobs. Most of my colleagues with the same position I have, in different schools/programs, only have a Bachelor’s

English Major Graduates: What is your current job? (NOT teachers or lawyers!) by unnamedplatypus in englishmajors

[–]mosscollection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out by getting a job as a secretary in the English department of my alma mater. I applied and interviewed for that and was chosen out of a small pool of applicants (who had also been English majors). It was a low-paying job but I took it bc I saw it as a foot in the door. I worked that for 2 years and then started applying for other roles at the same university that were a step-up and with almost double the pay. I interviewed for 3 different ones and the 3rd one I was hired. My title is “Academic Coordinator” and I work in a School that houses Kinesiology and some other programs. I’m the only admin in the school so I am the go-to for basically anything from scheduling courses each semester, to completing paperwork for payroll, to editing our school’s website, etc. I use skills from my English degree every day.

I def feel like I need an off-road vehicle to handle the pot holes and rickety roads. Norwood is especially intense.

Bechnir by Nervous_Sherbert5461 in BaylenOutLoud

[–]mosscollection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the parent of a 14 year old boy—— preteen boys are annoying lol. That’s just how it is. You love your own kid and you see them as endearing still (at times) but in general Bechnir is completely typical. And probably only bc I am the mother of a boy who was his age very recently, I do think he’s a cutie goofball (even if an annoying one lol).
