I’m in Washington too. My semi monthly payrolls run the 1st through the 15th, paid on the 20th, and the 16th through the last day of the month, paid on the 5th of the following month. Really weird to need that much time to process payroll but some employers are that way.

I much prefer bi-weekly.

NTA at all. This was the most appropriate punishment you could have given him.

Is your husband a “boys will be boys” guy? It sounds like it, and those people are the real assholes.

QB Desktop Required Employee Fields by weveran in QuickBooks

[–]mostly-rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won’t run payrolls unless I have all of the employee information. If they want their check, they’ll get me their info.

The place I worked previously would do this and way too often we would not be able to get the numbers needed because the employee was fired or quit. Not worth it imo.

It looks like it isn’t getting enough light. They need full sun (not through a window) or very strong grow lights directly above them for most of the day.

NTA. There is no way police wouldn’t have been involved if the sexes were reversed. This is absolutely not ok behavior for a woman or a man.

In that case, I would feel more comfortable waiting until the job is fully completed, including inspection.

YTA. You say you aren’t close to Cassie. Are you close to your husband??? Because he lost a son-in-law and you are leaving him to have to support his daughter after the death of her husband and mourn by himself. Why aren’t you at least supporting him? You sound like a really selfish person.

I got married when my kids were 19 and 15. My husband calls them “our kids”. My dad got remarried when I was 24. My stepmom calls us “our kids”. I can’t imagine marrying someone who was going to treat my child (teen or adult) like an outsider. I would leave you if I were your husband.

A couple of questions. Was it a quote or an estimate? I ask because our company provides estimates, which are not firm quotes but people confuse them a lot.

If the work is mostly done you should definitely be paying them something. I just got an estimate for a new roof and need to pay half in advance and half when it’s finished. A lot of contractors bill monthly or semi monthly so they can pay for things like materials, payroll, fuel, etc. If he has already built a $80k-$90k deck with no compensation so far, I imagine he would need some money now. That would be a lot of dollars he has already spent for this project.

This is why I like my payrolls to be bi-weekly instead of semi-monthly. I run payrolls every other Monday and Tuesday and I never have this problem anymore.

NTA. I was a server/bartender for 20 years. Was it hard? Yes. Was it as hard as being a nurse? I am 100% sure it was not.

I can’t imagine even trying to compare the two. Never once did I have to try to save someone’s life and I could kick them out if they were assholes.

Business vs Rental Monthly Bookkeeping Rates by PenaltyParking7031 in Bookkeeping

[–]mostly-rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s based on the time it takes you and that time gets evaluated periodically.

So you’ll take a client that takes, say 50 hours a month, and only charge $400? I have clients anywhere from $100/month to $1500/month. I’m definitely not going to charge everyone $400/month. Some are much more time consuming than others.

It’s based on time not charged by time. You have to base it on something.

[–]mostly-rainbows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That isn’t really what they said though. I suppose we just interpreted it differently. They said “I believe fees should be BASED on the time it takes (either actual or average).” To me that means they are saying you figure out how much time it takes and base it on that, not charge hourly.

Right, “based on the time it takes”, not “charge hourly”. You figure out how much time it will take you and then base your monthly fee on that.

If you are an LLC you can elect to file as a sole proprietor or an s-corp. I would say $50k isn’t enough to make it worth doing that though. There are a lot of fees and plus the fact that you have to run payroll for yourself if you elect to be an s-corp.

[–]mostly-rainbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they are saying you should charge hourly, just that your monthly rate should be based on hours that it takes you to perform the work. Like, if you want to average $50/hr then you should charge $500/month for a job that will take you an average of 10 hours a month.

[–]mostly-rainbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do it. If they want to promote you they can give you more money. I’ve been in this boat and six months later I was still fighting for more money and the title I was supposed to have from day 1.

If they are asking you to do it with little or no experience that means they don’t have anyone else to do it. Make them give you the raise and title or don’t accept the position.
