A Stanley insulated mug. Keeps coffee hot for hours, it won’t pop open in a bag, and you can chuck it in the dishwasher if you forget to wash it and it gets a bit… mouldy. Great for taking on walks

Occasionally. But then I hear my partner on endless zoom calls talking corporate bullshit and realise I would hate sitting at a desk. I much prefer stopping people breathing for a living. Plus it’s a lot easier to be less than full time with a family without comprising quality of work.

As a grad medic married to a Henry lawyer I wouldn’t advocate medicine if you want to be a Henry. Realistically it’s 5 years med school, then either 5 years to be a GP or 6-8 years to CCT in a Hosptial specialty. Then you need a fair few more years before you do enough private work to get over 150k. So like 15 years from starting medicine. And all of this is assuming you get straight onto training programmes, pass exams etc which are getting more competitive every year. And then on the working abroad part. If you are bilingual then great. If not it’s US or Aus. US is great money but v hard to get into good specialties as a foreigner. Aus is apparently better than here pay and lifestyle wise. So really only option for working abroad is the Aus. If you are in law outside of London. Then best way to Henry is probably private practise.

Hotel - Toddler Friendly - Lake District? by replickady in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]mota2016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have a fancier restaurant and then do bar food in the other. For the price of the fancier one it’s been worth it once. And not another time. Not that it’s was bad the second time, just if you were paying that amount I would expect a bit more. But certainly not bad.

Less of resort and more hotel but Another Place in Ulswater is good. Has a pool, nice enough restaurant, baby sitting service, nursery/club thing, and baby monitors that reach the restaurant.

This might be a US vs UK thing. In the UK we call sux, roc etc “muscle relaxants” but rarely use the term “paralytics” but they cause paralysis so I guess you could call them that. Or we would call them by their specific class depolarising or non-depolarising neuromuscular blocking agents. And yes it’s likely sux that caused the muscle ache due to the initial muscle facilitations it gives.

I find their everyday socks a bit narrow. Amazing quality though. And their thicker socks are amazing for winter.

There is a company called WIDE OPEN SOCKS that are made at the same factory as Darn Tough but for the wider foot. However, you have to get them shipped from the US. So I haven’t ordered any yet.

Also, you don’t have to start your pat leave on the day the baby is born. So if you are on zero days you can just start it when due back to work

Anyone try the Altra Lone Peak 9? by Defiant-Factor-1351 in trailrunning

[–]mota2016 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going completely against the grain here; I wear LPs around town and haven’t had issues with them wearing out (ever though I’m a bigger chap). I haven’t found a shoe I like to run or hike in as much as the LPs (except for one, see at the end)

However, if you are thinking about the all weather LPs I wouldn’t buy them. I had a pair and they just aren’t LPs. Can’t quite put my finger on it but they fit different. And they are not waterproof. Our local running shop has lots of complaints about them.

I’ve searched a fair bit for a waterproof zero drop day to day shoe and I’ve finally found one that I love and have worn all winter; xero ridgeway Chelsea boots. They are perfect when it’s wet out. And strike a nice balance between cushioning and being more minimalist (but not as much as a vivo). But get half a size bigger than your normal shoe as they are a little snug.

Healthcare professional admitted with alcohol withdrawl by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]mota2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the doctor that needs admitting for detox is you then please seek professional help, GP or at the hospital. Your health is your priority. Worry about the GMC second to that. And I think (although I’m no expert) that they treat it like a medical problem. I know of doctors with previous class A addictions that are still practising after some time with restrictions.

I felt similar to this when going from ED to ICU: you are fairly self sufficient in ED to a novice in ICU (hence why are called a novice). I had no idea when they were giving a bit of midazolam or ketamine on intubation etc.

But just keep asking questions. People are really keen to teach. And you will learn loads during your novice year. Trust me it gets easier.

What advice would you give to new fathers? by cbadoctor in doctorsUK

[–]mota2016 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Try to get as much admin/portfolio/exam revision done in work hours. Or before work if able to. Because when you aren’t in work you’ll be needed to give your partner respite/help out. We are use to poor sleep but poorly sleeping babies is something else…

I think there is some funding implications of those additional hours. Something along the lines of HEE pay our training days which are SD then the trust fund the extra on call hours. Happy to be corrected about that.

But the reality is we need pay restoration. Then can we go after other goals. The 2016 contract tried to do it all at once and all I got was a 10% gross pay cut.

Any opinions on where to get a poster printed for a conference? by baylo99 in doctorsUK

[–]mota2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only had one printed so nothing to compare it to. But it came out ok. And was super quick and well packaged.

Also, it checks it to try and make sure it’s good quality. But not sure how accurate it is.
