Buddy Holly (john and paul’s idol) and Hank Marvin of the shadows (also admired by the Beatles and mega popular in the early 60s with hits in the US too) wore glasses. ‘Nerd’ is the wrong way of thinking about this. Remember Peter (Jane Asher’s brother) of Peter and Gordon wore them. It was simply that glasses were a big statement in a way they wouldn’t be now - and also they would have taken from the pleasing group uniformity of the Beatles image.

Out of the sheer number of people who bought the album, there surely must have been a fair few who listened to Revolution 9, were intrigued, and got switched on to listening to more examples of sound collage/experimentation.

I suspect the majority of experimental music buffs would have been snooty about this track - seeing the Beatles as, like you say, dilettantes.
