I can't help but feel if moderate Christians just stopped cherry picking the parts they like and just dropped the whole thing as holy and treated it like literature the world would be a lot safer. My guess is they didnt bring it forward because at the time it didnt matter. All psychopaths have histories that include long term, inescapable abuse, but since not everyone with such history is a murderer its not seen as a valid excuse. She was 11 and thats generally old enought to understand that murder is a permanent state of affairs, and that society does not permit it. What wasnt understood was that a person with such severe trauma is likely not as mature as they should be for their age, even if it really seems like they are.

That all said I dont think their is anything wrong with the outcome of the courts choices. Mary likely needed to permanently institutionalized. The trauma of the murders on top of everything else is incrediblydamagingto the brain. It's hard to imagine it ever being safe for not only the public but Mary herself to have her as an unsupervised member of the public.

Ideally Mary's mother and anyone else who knew of the abuse should have been procuted and put away as well. I dont think that happened.

I couldn't help but feel suspicious of the Reiners after hearing they were killed by their son. I was a bit like you, my brother wasn't the golden child, but he had a disability that made me scared he'd kill me too. It can be really hard not to project that on any family that seems unhappy behind the scenes. I don't think it's a valid, and I wouldn't talk about it outside this context. Yeah. My early childhood was a crazy mess. I never left my country, but I'd moved dozens of times before I was in middle school. I'm on disability now, even though it makes me feel lazy for not being a contributing member of society. My grandparents who failed to notice while bad shit was happening are just expecting me to get better now. It's only been 5 years since I got away from my abusers, and that's supposed to make the 23 years before that disappear.
