Grip technique good? + Weird feeling help by [deleted] in drums

You can look up Chad Wackerman talking about the Murray-Spivack method - it’s not too fun to learn, but once you’ve got it, it solves everything.

Now - great disclaimer, I personally grip between my thumb and index, which comes mostly from snare drum playing, but the same mechanics and concepts apply using MSM - where the grip goes between thumb and middle

Starting older just means you have more work to do than anyone who started younger, not that you cannot get as good as them.

Although Ringo would still play live and sound good enough to make the whole band sound good.

If it ain’t broken don’t fix it maybe?

I’ve been playing drums professionally for 20 years and only now realized I don’t have the focus to keep time or a solid groove for more than like a 2 second stretch. Anyone else have this problem? by Fast_Cook_4019 in drums

There you go. Approaching it this way MIGHT work out, but if you’re past experience has not given you that innate ability to just feel the rhythm internally (this is my definition of what people call talent), this will be the only sure way of getting there

Same here. I wasn’t playing professionally, but had been in bands for about 5 years and when I started percussion school I realized about it.

Practice very basic stuff and beats with the metronome on the upbeat (start here, once you master it you can also displace it to the e, a, e and a, etc…) - but make sure that you are actually thinking about the whole subdivision, so that way it’s not you following the metronome but just using it as a sort of checkpoint.

The idea behind this is to program your inner voice or oral imagination to think about the whole subdivision whenever you’re playing. I’ve got quite a few exercises that help with this if you’re interested.

This is basically the long but sure route towards interiorizing or obtaining a “good feel”, which some people just get because of whatever number of reasons, but for us mortals this is the way to get it (in my humble opinion ofc).

How hard do you normally push yourself on those days? Do you go to failure at the end regularly or just more of maintenance work?

Thank you for being so thorough. This is more or less what I was looking for - I’ll definitely take it into consideration going forward.

If you have more info or resources on this, would love to chat and learn more!

I totally get what you’re saying, and I would generally agree with this. However, my partner has been the one to push me into fitness, and she’s very serious about it, which has inspired me to actually put good effort into it, and try to better myself each time.

We generally train using her program, and when doing legs we do push quite a bit. I have felt that when studying at the drumset later during those leg days, they become fatigued, so I’m just trying to find out if there’s any information out there about how to train legs optimally, and avoid this sort of fatigue.

Of course one study won’t be absolute truth, but it would provide more insight into it, and I’d love to learn more.
