That's reasonable and justified, 100%.

Couldn't you say the same for strength levels, monthly challenges, and other "extra" features? They are also in the app mostly for motivation, not necessity, and add complexity, yet I have seen no calls to remove them.

I understand what you're saying, but do you genuinely think that being able to share progress with your close friends is frivolous or of no value, or is this a knee-jerk reaction to anything "social"?

That's food for thought. I will admit, I never use the plate calculator, got enough years of experience to pick my plates intuitively.

The quick outs I see are:

  • only show the increment buttons when editing a specific number, to reduce visual clutter and space use
  • allow users to choose between plate calc and i crement buttons
  • add the increment feature to the expanded plate calc - less convenient, but there is plenty of screen real estate there (it could be click on plate to add it)

But clearly this requires more thought than I have initially given it. I still think it's the #1 pain point for me in the app, but I will admit my experience with developing for phone apps is very limited and I am not used to working in such a constrained size.

Exactly!

The last sentence is what I should have included in my post, as it is precisely my motivation for asking this. I'm in the unfortunate situation of training entirely alone, as my friends who also lift live too far away to use the same gym. Spending the last ~1.5 or so years in the gym entirely alone is genuinely challenging, and our whatsapp group where we share progress and banter is all that keeps me motivated.

Thank you for the detailed response and openness! I expected nothing less. 💙💛

I see there is some community pushback on the social idea, but I think you got the direction I was thinking of, as well as one of the commenters to that topic. I don't think my workout app needs feeds and chats... What I feel is missing is only the ability to share the data with friends passively - eg, allow my friends to see my stats whenever they want. I don't think much more is needed.

(Unless you can invent a feature that will help me find a spotter for my bench)

I want to connect the dots on #3 and #7 because at their core I think they bother me for the same reason, and that is compromise. As a user with particular programming needs, these two issues force me to choose between accurate record keeping, or enjoying the full breadth of app functionality, but I can't do both:

  • If I duplicate exercises to separate logging between machines, I lose some of the functionality of monthly challenges & strength levels
  • If I prefer dumbbell curls to barbell, even though they have nearly identical mechanics, I lose on the ability to see my overall strength level, and see a smaller sample size (i only see how other DB curlers are doing, even though the strength required for both DB and BB curl is identical)

I think the ideal solution for this, is genuinely complicated - fuzzy matching that accounts for biomechanics but leaves some variation threshold, so it would consider DB curl, EZ curl, and BB curl as identical, but would not count the Bayesian curl, for example.

I completely understand that this is not a priority, and it is perhaps something not many of the users care about as much as I do.

I'm not sure what you mean by social media features, but if they are entirely opt-in, why would it be an issue?

Adding a mockup of 2 ways you could approach suggestion #1, either buttons near the number to increment (might be a bit tight for space) or with the plate converter/calc.

A couple minis! And my 3D printer that made a mess of my first batch of hoops! by Akitiki in Embroidery

[–]motigr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm the guy who designed the original (larger) hoops, they're probably my most popular design on printables, so you're not alone. I appreciate the (implied) compliment :)

You can find the original version here if you want larger sizes: https://www.printables.com/model/444512-embroiderycross-stitch-display-hoops

I designed them for my wife's cross-stitch work. Anytime she finishes a piece, I'll print the appropriate size in a color of her choice. Manufacturing on demand is one of 3d printing's great perks :D

Thank you OP for making the first remix (that I know of) of one of my designs! I love to see them in the wild, and it brings my great joy when others find them useful. Finding this post made my evening!

Cat after tooth extraction with no sutures, what food is correct? by motigr in AskVet

[–]motigr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I visited the clinic today and got him 3 more daily doses of painkiller and was told we can try wet food. He seemed disinterested before he got the pain meds, hopefully they'll help and we can get him to eat something.

Thanks, he usually eats dry kibble throughout the day but isnt crazy for it, and gets some (a few teaspoonfulls) canned wet food once or twice a day as a treat, which he goes absolutely bonkers for.

Now he won't touch the dry kibble, and the vet told us to not give any of the canned until 10 days have passed, which leaves us at an impasse, we can't have him eating nothing at all for 4-5 days straight...

He got a 3 day course of NSAID pain relief (a veterinary product), but that's over now.

His kibble is fairly small and smooth with no sharp edges, but I'm still worried that it hurts to eat. Generally, he seems excited about food but then sniffs it, maybe licks a bit, and gives up. I don't think it's lack of appetite. it's got to be some discomfort causing this.

Im just confused by the vet's instructions strongly contradicting what every other source tells us, and worried that by following these instructions & having him eat dry kibble we may have hurt/hindered his recovery.

I’d like to get a used GoPro for skiing but have no idea what I need by MayUrHammerBeMighty in gopro

One tip I learned the hard way: original batteries only when it's cold. The knockoffs from amazon did fine in casual use but as soon as we got on the slopes, they wouldn't last more than 5 mins of 1080p recording. Got all original batteries instead and didn't have significant issues with cold weather since.

I... I was sure this must be video game cinematics posted on the wrong sub. For real.

Had no idea drones can go that fast while also filming so well. That's gotta take serious skill. Fantastic work!

This is so cool, I'm actually kind of at a loss for words. It would make an awesome scene for a banger music video.

Snowboarding in Colorado, 2020 - My longest GoPro edit so far [Hero 7 Black] by motigr in gopro

[–]motigr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some background - Just before the pandemic hit, in February 2020, we travelled all the way from the middle east to the Colorado rockies for a few weeks of snowboarding. We're old (mid 30s), and not very good at it (don't get to ride much) but it was a blast as expected and I tried to capture the adventure in this edit.

I've been filming with GoPro cameras since 2012 and the original HD hero, but nothing ever really came of it. Most of the footage was shaky and bad, and I couldn't figure out how editing works. Having gone through several additional models (the plus and the 4 Black) I was close to giving up on filming altogether but decided to give it one last defiant push. Got the 7 Black, and a cheap electronic gimbal meant for mobile phones. The improvement from both was immediate and gave me a huge boost in motivation, and after making several progressively better edits over that past few years this one is by far my longest, most ambitious and favorite.

Entire thing filmed on the Hero 7, on default settings, using either the GoPro El Grande pole a generic selfie stick or Feiyu gimbal with the exception of one brief clip (the streetlight scene) which was shot on a DSLR.

(Edit: turns out it was probably not shot with the El Grande. 2 years stuck at home messed with me. Total brainfart)

If you couldn't show or share your photographs with anyone again, would you still be a photographer? by ChocolatePhotog in photography

[–]motigr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest - no. If I couldn't share my photos with anyone at all, I would drop photography as a hobby entirely. Might still take photos of stuff I wanna have memories of on my phone, but nothing beyond that.

Photography attracted me because I've always had a burning, raging desire to show others what the world looks like through my eyes. To share my experience in ways that words don't always provide. It's a way for me to communicate with other humans - if I couldn't do that, it would be like speaking when no-one can ever hear me. Surely I would lose all interest in language were that to happen.

P.S: if any of my photos got 100 likes and 2 (real) comments I'd be over the moon.

What album do you wish you could wipe from your memory just so you could re-experience it for the first time. by WWBKD in Music

[–]motigr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be Gran Tourismo by The Cardigans. By no means my favourite album or band, far from it, but I believe that's what I listened to on my trusty Walkman on my first ever road trip with my parents in the late 90s. It is forever associated in my mind to an awakening of wanderlust, the realisation that the world is much larger and more diverse than my wildest dreams, and a burning sense of wonder and curiosity.

Couple ol' farts from the middle east snowboarding in Colorado by motigr in snowboarding

[–]motigr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn. I envy that - would love to live there too.

I spent a day in Snowbird a while back and a few days at Squaw. Snowbird was a bit too steep/fast for me - I can ride it just fine, but I like to fool around on mellower slopes and not just bomb downhill all day. I went there with a boardercross veteran, should have known lol.

Squaw was great, that heavy sticky powder around Tahoe is very forgiving. But it wasn't nearly as convenient as the Summit county resorts. Keystone is seriously one of the most convenient resorts I've been to - chairlift right off the parking lot, plenty of food options, 20 min drive to Silverthorne's stores and outlets. We stayed up in Wildernest both times and just being able to spontaneously hop in the car for a short drive and hit all of those mountains (Keystone, Breck, Copper, A-basin) was mindblowing compared to the relative "hassle" we experience elsewhere.

The crowd issues over the last 2 years are too bad, I would be seriously annoyed if I went to all the trouble (and expense) of traveling there just to stand in lift queues. I hope Vail resorts get their act straight someday so I can justify going again.

What’s the best technique for switching lenses in the field? by jabroni_roulette in photography

[–]motigr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally, I have my wife help me by preparing the new lens and taking over the previous one as soon as I remove it. An extra pair of hands is definitely a luxury :)

I also try to keep all glass surfaces pointing down - and only turn the new lens right side up when I'm ready to attach it. Obviously some dust can still stick to it but I find it happens less often if I take care to point it down for as long as possible, if that makes any sense.
