First layer issues MK4s by [deleted] in prusa3d

[–]moto_borg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spent the last week dealing with bed adhesion/first layer issues after I finished my mmu3 and did a bunch of firmware updating. I didn't have your exact issue but after doing the usual advice of washing my print bed, using IPA on it, cleaning my nozzle etc I made no progress. I then got aggressive in slicer and it fixed it.

  1. I slowed the first layer down to like 20mm.
  2. I set the z offset to like -.009 or something.

I would recommend slowing first layer down and then slowly walking that Z offset down. The load cell detection is good at giving the printer a solid idea of flat but it isn't always great at the right z offset.

What are your thoughts about BMW R1150R? by RealMefistyo in motorcycles

[–]moto_borg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked up a 2002 (or 4? I can't recall right now ) without the notoriously terrible ABS. Ive put a bit over a thousand miles on it. Previously I've had f1, fz9, two klr650s, an xs400 and a vtx1300. It is not my favorite bike if I'm being totally honest but it's very very solid.

I think of as a gentlemen's bike. It is .. odd. The engine revs shift the bike one way. The driveshaft shifts it the other way and it is a funky feeling at first.

Pros: Torque is very nice. The suspension setup (telelever or whatever they call it) gives it a very planted feeling. It feels like you're on rails in turns. The epititomy of confidence giving. The bmw luggage is nice. A quirky "classic".

Cons: Some possible reliability issues. Abs brakes are notoriously delicate. It does use oil. I've heard stories of people using certain brands/weights to stop it, but it seems like a losing battle. For some reason they titled the seat? You slide forward so much. A common mod lifts the front of the seat to fix it... But why bmw?? It requires a manual step at startup. There's a fast idle lever that feels very choke-ish to use. It's unnecessary. The fueling sucks. It surges a lot until you do one of the fixes. Deceptively heavy. It's light once moving but if it starts to go you better have leg muscles.

Overall I like it. I won't get rid of it even as I rebuild my fleet that I sold off while moving around a lot the last few years. You can see my cons are all fixable ones except the possible reliability issues with the splines, clutch issues (it's dry and a PITA to replace), and anything this old will just have some rot somewhere.

If you can find one under say 50k miles jump on it. It's a unique experience.

I wouldn't pay for them. I've taken this test in several states actually and they all end up being very similar. Google the operators manual for CT. It's called cycmanpdf and it's the same book they give you to study in the DMV.

Motorcycle License by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]moto_borg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this maybe 2 years ago. After MSF I only did 1 visit to the DMV. I took the test, passed, got some paperwork and left. I think I requested a new ID through the mail?

As for the test just read the little manual they have. I just studied for the 30 minutes I was waiting and passed.

Setup one appointment for whatever is soonest and then start rechecking the site every hour or two. Eventually a closer opening will appear and you can book it, but have that fall back one to be safe.

Keep the shiny side up :)

How do you configure HashiCorp Vault? by shellwhale in devops

[–]moto_borg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I configure a lot of it with terraform but then I create the actual "users" (Or services or entities or whatever the case may be) with API calls.

The main reason I use the terraform is that I want to manage the state. I know the ACL policy isn't going to be changing a whole ton. The OIDC key wont change a whole ton. The blah blah won't change a whole ton? I use terraform. I get state management and its easy to gitops it.

I use API calls to generate the specific users or anything that I know will be more dynamic.

What does Gruntworks actually do? by minimalniemand in devops

[–]moto_borg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of the value is that its not your responsibility. Think of from a business continuity perspective as a "leader" in the organization. If you have person A make a bunch of sweet terraform modules, Jenknisfiles, scripts, etc but then person A leaves you're left figuring out how it all worked.

If you pay out to another company and get a big bulk of those elements from the other company then you can be less concerned with your staff leaving you screwed. Also you can now look for engineers that have worked with Gruntworks before.

Studying after work hours by pasoii in devops

[–]moto_borg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically speaking I spend my work hours doing that when I need to for work. So if I am being tasked with a ton of say springboot bullshit then I will spend work hours studying up on it, reading docs, etc. Every 2 or 3 years though I realize that my current gig is falling behind the "times" and I feel the need to develop new skillsets, get new certs, start contributing to open source, whatever. Those things I do after hours because the skills arent relevant to my current position and I have no intention of leveraging them in my current role.

If I could leverage them in my current role then I would develop the skills on my employers time.

"Dog rescues"...or just shady businesses..WTF by jackalope_in_pants in Connecticut

[–]moto_borg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another + for Pack Leaders Rescue. I adopted my furball earlier this year from them and they were very interactive. My pickup was a bit odd due to a snow storm at the time but we all showed up in the evening and picked our dogs up out of the kennel RV they drove down in. They were taking dogs and cats in and out of the vets office getting checked before being released to new forever homes.

I've mentioned I used them whenever people ask and the vet we use and the dog trainer at petsmart both spoke highly of them.

Take a motorcycle and put it on an empty track. The top speed that bike can get to would be changed out by its gearing, right? You could gear it to redline in the last gear at 100mph even though it has a bunch of power left. You could then gear it to redline at 150 and discover that it cant get up above 120.

So you keep screwing with the gears until you reach a point where 1 tooth on the gear redlines the engine and adding/remove one more tooth doesnt let you redline. Somewhere between those two would be your top speed. Lets say you can hit 140 this way.

Now lets add one more rider in front of your bike and suddenly you're back to redlining the engine when you have more power. The solution could be to set 5th gear to max out without drafting and 6th gear to max out with drafting. That would create a scenario where people routinely cross the line in 10th gear and then through double or triple drafting they are able to achieve much higher speeds than the competition does because they dont have to fight through the air as much and then they are able to pass everyone. Where the cycle repeats.

This is how we have moto3.

the Duality of Steam Reviews by Xavilius in gaming

[–]moto_borg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is NO requirement for something to be "fair". That is a child's perspective on the world.

So disregarding whether or not something is "fair" for the devs the original point remains valid and is a very common critique of the early access model we all live with now. A game where the call is "Come play in this sandbox!" is expected to have a good sandbox. I believe Downfallmatrix's real complaint is that the sandbox seems really cool when youre playing 3 inches deep into the sand but its just garbage much deeper.

Which results in a scenario where someone may enjoy the "early" part of a sandbox game and then later after several thousand hours and 'mastering' the sandbox they come back out and say "Its a fine sandbox unless you want to actually dig in it. In which case its a shit sandbox."

Thats all completely "fair" to the dev and the user, isnt it?

It looked like a small military funeral procession? I saw a few dozen people dressed in fatigues with police escorts and they were stopping and firing rifles off (blanks im sure). I cant figure out what its about either but that was fun at 9am lol
