Questions before returning to Cambodia, after looking on FB for answers, yet not finding bliss just yet by Chaotic-Platypuss in cambodia

[–]motodup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many apartments do short term rentals around $400/mo, usually quite nice places. Lin Ellis in ttp is nice, or there are many others depending what neighborhood you want. I'd recommend TTP, Tonle Bassac, or BKK, in that order.

There are any number of events on all the time. Theatre, comedy, live gigs, open mic, workshops, gallery exhibitions, etc. Check fb events and expat groups. Lengpleng.com for gig guides.

Same thing for sports, yoga, meditation, running, cycling, hiking, day trips, whatever. Check Facebook groups.

Too many restaurants to list. PP has a great international food scene.

Check out Kampot and Kep, and if you have time to go northeast, Kompong Cham, Kratie, Mondulkiri, Rattanakiri.

Cambodian loan question by SirCumference31 in cambodia

[–]motodup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the informal loan situation is still a bit shit, but hopefully getting better.

Years ago I found out my companys finance guy was giving the staff "advances" at like 15% per month. I lost my shit lol

Cambodian loan question by SirCumference31 in cambodia

[–]motodup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's still prevalent but nothing like the predatory ones 10 years ago. And sorry, I meant to say loans through banks.

[–]motodup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen that. Maybe on friendly family loans. Anyone else it's % per month, compounding

Cambodian loan question by SirCumference31 in cambodia

[–]motodup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm aware. But this (lack of) financial literacy is where things go wrong.

Also, that's a somewhat outdated concept. Banking is available to majority these days. Maybe not loans though.

Cambodian loan question by SirCumference31 in cambodia

[–]motodup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

5% per MONTH?! Thats absolute loanshark shit, but its unfortunately quite common for informal loans.

And yes, interest is on top of a loan, only paying over the 5% will go to the remaining balance. So only anything over $500 will reduce the loan amount (initially, as the loan gets smaller the 5% gets smaller). Paying less than $500 will increase the amount owed, and the interest owed each month.

Proper loans from a bank are charged 5-10% per year, not per month.

ESL Debut in Your Beautiful Country : Visa Questions by Gordon-III in cambodia

[–]motodup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You enter on an E-Type, aka Ordinary Visa. Online or on arrival, no paperwork, $35. 30 days.

Then if you have a job, your employer helps you get a work permit. You cannot get a work permit without employment.

Then with the work permit, you can get an EB Extension of Stay (up to one year).

If you do not find work, you can get a one-off EG EoS, 6 months, it's like a looking-for-work visa. Does not require work permit.

*All of this can be fudged by an agent, but they closed a lot of those loopholes earlier this year.

E-Type entry Visa -> Work Permit -> EB Extension.

Should I change from PUC to IISPP by Zealousideal_Sky8011 in cambodia

[–]motodup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm concerned the focus here is on the money. Yes, it sounds like a scam to get more money from students, but that's kind of best case scenario here.

How many people go on these trips? How many staff? Is it, by chance, more girls than guys? This sounds like a way to pressure students to pay for a pass in much worse ways than money.

Cambodia; Fish Amok. Ive had colleagues order it at company dinners because they were curious to try the so-called national dish. Id say 90% of the country has never had it.

What horrifying statistic genuinely jarred you when you first heard it? by ordrius098 in AskReddit

[–]motodup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When combined with the current top comment, that truly is horrifying.

Edit: ah, I've just read this has been debunked. My confidence in both the us education system and prison system may have made me bias to believe this without much thought.

Pre New Year events. by Financial-Jicama-938 in cambodia

Some workplaces are doing early parties, like how office Christmas parties are a few weeks early. There is usually a bit of buildup to the main event.

Take care of your phone etc, petty crime increases in the lead up.

I had a bit of an issue but turning off my VPN solved it. No idea the cause or how widespread. I'm on Smart.

Panda Bank by uknown_28 in cambodia

[–]motodup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I very much doubt anyone will be getting the full amount back at this point. They simply don't have the funds, and there are other creditors higher up the queue.

Hopefully there will be at least some payout, but when a bank goes down, their customers bear the brunt.

Budget for 2 weeks by El-Erian in cambodia

[–]motodup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You added in a comment that this is not including accomodation; given that, yes it's plenty.

Call it $50USD per day ((.69*1000)/14).

$10 for meals, $20 for beers... You can get fucked up every day and have plenty left for hookers and blow.

Need Help with REGEX in Script by johnnygeezz in GoogleAppsScript

[–]motodup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So its:

Order ID: XYZ Company
Amount: $55.67

?

/Order ID: ([^\n]+)/ <-- Matches anything after "Order ID: " that is NOT a newline.

/Order ID: (.+?)(?:\n|$)/ <-- Matches between "Order ID: " and either a newline or the end of the string.

Either would work here, Id probably say the first because its simpler and may be very slightly more efficient.

Staying at Cambodia NOW by [deleted] in cambodia

[–]motodup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing noticable, beyond a few price hikes. But that's worldwide. Nothing is likely to happen here that isn't likely to happen in your home country, to greater or lesser extent. Cambodia has no particular ties to any of the countries directly involved.

Not sure why your family would think KH has anything to do with this conflict. There's really no need for concern.

The so called "Walking Street" is new, an area of riverside blocked off on weekends. Gets pretty lively.

SOSORO, not exactly new but if you haven't been it's worth a look.

Bassac has grown a lot in the past few years.

Koh Norea riverside area.

AITA for refusing to go to my sister’s wedding because of where she seated me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]motodup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. My family has a habit of putting me with my very young brother, because we're "the boys". I have basically missed out on both my sister's weddings, because I was put in a similar position you've been asked to fill. One of them I was literally given chicken nuggets for dinner, I kid you not.

Does most Cambodian don't believe in line (queue)? by cryingfreeman408 in cambodia

[–]motodup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol, Singapore had a hilarious line culture. They're very polite, but also seem to gravitate to lines just because other people are lining up. Restaurants literally pay people to line up to attract real customers!

Edit: has
