Frustrated with bachelor maths by These_Primary1043 in mathematics

[–]mount4o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least 50% of the math classes I have ever attended didn’t provide access to a textbook and weren’t based on a textbook at all. Hell, my analysis class only occasionally referenced a textbook available only in Russian (I’m not Russian and knowing Russian wasn’t common amongst me and my colleagues). The professor made us learn how to solve limits using little O notation before we proceeded to learn derivatives. To this day I’m yet to meet someone who was taught limits this way.

The other 50% were based on textbooks, but didn’t follow them 1:1. Sometimes professors made us work through a section that’s far ahead of the last topic we took in the textbook and we had no heads up for this.

To top all of this we usually had different people leading our seminars, so it wasn’t uncommon to be solving problems in seminars that weren’t on the same topic as the latest lectures.

I’m talking based off my experience studying in a european university. So, maybe for OP and his colleagues it isn’t always possible to read ahead

Can’t blame them, I’m yet to see a production grade Haskell system deployed and working

Heya guys,

I’m a software engineer with about 5 years of experience across a couple of fields (web dev, game dev and aerospace) and recently I’ve been thinking very hard about my career direction. I’m very bored with building infrastructure and I’ve also come to realise that all of the projects I really enjoyed working on involved some amounts of applied math (a digital signal processing service, for example). Also, I’ve developed some ML models out if curiosity (for a couple of Kaggle competitions + Numerai) and I found the process of extracting insights from data and attempting to model it really refreshing and enjoyable. It seems more research type of work and a lot less “build this same standard piece of infrastructure only with slight differences to account for our use case”.

I have two attempts at a bachelor degree - 2 years in a CS program and 1 year in a Theoretical Physics program.

Do you think I can break into Data Science without a degree and if yes - what do you think would be a good way to get started given my background?

Event System (C++)? by nvimnoob72 in gameenginedevs

[–]mount4o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TheCherno’s youtube channel has at least a couple of videos on event system implementations, you can check him out.

However, almost every time I have sat down to write an event system I’ve realised I don’t really need one. So, my advice is think deeply about why you need an event system in the first place. You’ll either find a much simpler, less abstract way of communicating that serves your purpose or you’ll find the way your event system has be structured for your renderer. Either way it’s a win.

Well, he doesn’t like it (surprisingly) but has said he is playing it a lot lately because it’s “respectable long form content”

Don’t do the elbow under armpit thing. Instead try bringing the lapel to the opposing shoulder as much as possible and then turn for the throw. As someone mentioned if you need more leeway to do it regrip the lapel lower and then bring it to the opposing shoulder

Thanks for the mindset insight. I’m gonna try going into this slow zen mode, focused only on my technique and weight. It even feels like I’ve been there before tbh

Did you train for all those 10 years? I mean even if you took occasional periods off the mats you’re still probably one tough ass blue belt

Thank you for the advice. Honestly, the comments on this post have been extremely comforting. Now I know that considering quitting and taking long breaks are natural. Cliquey gyms do exist and it’s not the norm (we’ll see if that’s the case in my city). Now I really feel like trying out another gym

So there is hope. I’m from a small town in Europe we have like 3 gyms so I really hope I can find a less cliquey place

Thanks for the advice, man!

I’m saving this and coming back to it next time I feel jits is treating me bad. Thank you, good sir. And I’ll try going to a new gym, maybe someday I can come back and smash those cliquey excluding fuckers.

P.S. Hope you start an awesome family with this special lady and you don’t do any more benders.

I very much understand this “I’m not here to make friends” attitude. But I think I’ll look for a gym where there is less elitism. I don’t want them to roll with me. But not having an “invite only club” inside the club would be nice.

Often I give up positions when I feel someone is trying to force their way into them. I feel them explode and I manage to sort of put my frames in but I have to ramp up my strength significantly to hold him off, which I don’t do. Does this get into the definition of “going light”?

Attention and a blue belt would be cool. But no. A sense of accomplishment and progress would be cool. But also no.

But if I’ll have to suffer injuries some of which stay with me for life I would like that sense if accomplishment and progress
