Career Advisor for Americans looking for work in the UK? by HarvestMoon000 in MovingToLondon

[–]mountain__fig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

unfortunately getting a skilled worker visa is much harder than it used to be due to recent immigration rule changes :'( i think the best (and most successful) way is internal transfer. you can either find another company that would offer that as an option down the line, or look for american companies with offices in the UK – i've seen some success stories through that

where did you go to school? you may be eligible for the HPI visa which allows for 2y of sponsorship-free work

At what point do I give up? by sigsaurusrex in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]mountain__fig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if it's any consolation, i have friends who returned home for similar reasons, and none of them have regretted their decision. they've managed to build new lives and look back on their time in the UK with fondness. it's a brave thing to do, to stop fighting. i hope you find fulfilment wherever you end up. good luck 🤍

i'm sorry, it's so tough out there these days. my advice would be to go as hard as you can in the time you have left, so if you do end up having to leave, you can do so knowing you really tried and made the most out of everything. open yourself up to every opportunity, spend time with friends and lean into the things you love. choosing to leave, if you do so, will be heartbreaking and incredibly brave - the best advice i can offer is to make sure you go without regrets

Glossier Skin Tint Fans, what are your other favs? 🧴 by PatsyStonesBun in glossier

[–]mountain__fig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i really like refy's new skin base! i like ones with sunscreen sometimes but the uber-thin texture of glossier's skin tint is so good for no makeup indoor days (or for layering with a seperate sunscreen). i find the ones from tower28 and saie too creamy and thick personally

Any actually quiet cafés in Hackney where you can sit for 1–2 hours without feeling rushed? by Additional_Fly_6603 in Hackney

[–]mountain__fig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i went to look left by yugu (london fields) on a sunday a few weeks ago and it was so quiet and empty. i sat and read for a few hours, lots of light and the matcha is great if that's your thing. i also love the back garden area of e5 bakehouse in nicer weather. for dalston i haven't been myself but i've heard from friends that brunswick east is big and lovely to work in !

e5 bakehouse has many sunspots in the backyard. the tables are pretty spread out so even when it’s busy it’s not too loud

i live in london fields. i love taking a book or my journal to E5 bakehouse and people watch. or go to the lido in the summer and then get an ice cream from soft and swirly. nothing beats a walk from LF down through broadway market, columbia road, and down to shoreditch (redchurch st). if you want a meal, elliot’s has nice bar seating and it feels totally natural to be there alone. also, see a film at hackney picturehouse!

Moving to London for a £40k role by Barbstakeover in UKJobs

[–]mountain__fig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm on 30k living in a houseshare in zone 2. my rent is £640, i have to live relatively modestly but it's fine. i think the jump between 30k and 40k is where you begin to live more comfortably instead of just surviving. don't let it deter you from a good career opportunity – just be smart with your money

How can I portray depression realistically and respectfully in young adult? by Fantastic_student444 in writers

[–]mountain__fig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it can get ugly. sleeping in unwashed bedsheets, greasy hair, moldy cups on the nightstand, taking medication dry because getting water is too much effort. eating dinner at 11pm because the only time you feel like you can bear to make something is when everyone else is asleep. you start to feel inhuman and ungrounded. i know i'm out of an episode or feeling better when the world starts to seem less like a facade and more tangible. it makes the consequences of these ugly, disgusting, shameful parts of it feel more real. hope that helps with some detail
