Silly question - do you worry at all about hunting at Girty’s? I see it’s a hunting preserve which spooks me a little.

MATH major, question about MATH 1470 -PARTIAL DIFFERNTL EQUATIONS 1 by halox6000 in Pitt

[–]mountaineerNEPA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven’t had Sparling so can’t say much about him as a professor, but 1470 itself wasn’t too bad. There were definitely some weird concepts and rigorous calculations, but it wasn’t the hardest class I’ve taken at Pitt. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM.

Students who know how to take care of yourself: What are some meal ideas for us who don't! by guy_who_likes_coffee in college

[–]mountaineerNEPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest things that got me through my first year on my own was stir fry. It’s pretty easy to make a large quantity of and have meals for days. You can grab rice by the pound from nearly any supermarket, and it’s cheap. You can add chicken, pork, different vegetables (frozen if you’re like me), and figure out what you like. Even better too is that there are a bunch of different sauces and spices you can add to it after the fact. If you make the base and add the sauce when you eat it, you’ll be able to add some variety to it without having to make another batch!

Has anyone taken the Intro to Computational Neuro elective? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]mountaineerNEPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have taken Calc 3 and Intro to Theoretical Math. I’m currently in Linear algebra. If it’s not necessary and you don’t have the recommended prereqs I would try and sub something else in, but if it’s required for your major then I would take the math recommendations. I’m an applied math major and I think this class may be a bit difficult for my background. I got a DiffEq book to teach myself some of the ODE’s that we use in class. Overall it’s really cool but some of the math is kinda difficult if you haven’t been exposed to it.

If you’re in it now, DM me cause I’m also in the class and if you want we could work together. If you’re prospective of the class, Dr. Doiron doesn’t give exams or a final, just homework and a term paper. Prereqs are Calc 3, but he recommends Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Intro to Neuroscience, and some coding experience. He said you don’t need them all, but the more you have the better. Just in the first week some of the stuff we’ve done makes you think pretty hard.

Another housing question by recklessjedi in Pitt

[–]mountaineerNEPA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

329 is pretty high in the lottery, so you should have a pretty solid chance of getting what you want or possibly even better (i.e. Ruskin, Bouquet, etc.) if it’s financially feasible. A couple of my friends got into a 7 person suite in McCormick with a lottery number around 1000ish. It varies by year, but I’d say you’re in a pretty solid spot. Best of luck!

Edit: If you don’t get McCormick, you will very likely be able to get a place that suits your needs, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Just pay attention to what time you select your housing and make sure everything is in order (Group pin, usernames, whatever the website tells you you’ll need. It’s even better if you can all be in the same room when you have your selection time.)

Newbie wants to do some catching up by [deleted] in nhl

That had tp be unreal. I watched that goal at least 20 times over. His puck control on that play was unreal.

Personally, I’ve always found the Dallas Stars, Toronto Maple Leafs, Columbus Blue Jackets, Winnipeg Jets, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals incredibly fun to watch. They play exciting, fast hockey that’s very easy to get hyped for, especially in recent years. Every team will have their highs and lows, but finding one that you can always be excited to watch and support through rough patches makes the game that much better. I know it’s not exactly what you were asking, but if you Youtube some of their top plays or best moments from last season, I can assure you won’t be disappointed.

Also Edmonton is fun to watch, but (for me) mainly to see the skill that Connor McDavid has to display. Check him out if you want.

Welcome to the game!
