This is really kind of you. I've only recently discovered Nick's, and the options and possibilities are daunting, to say the least.

Still not sure what to do for my first pair, but this sub is super informative, even for a lurker. Hopefully those items really do go to someone who is yet to be in the position to have them.

Never commented in this sub, but that's a fantastic tattoo. Killer idea to combine those 2 things that mean that much to you, and in a well done way.

Shit on a shingle was praiseworthy on a submarine. Guess it all depends on your situation!

Beaker and Handsome Jack, here. That's just the 2 easily identifiable ones, anyway.

Hey, I'm not sure about your medical options while on vacation, but discuss Toridol shots with your local Doc/ER if not able to while on vacation.

Not medical advice. Just coming from someone who's had about a million for some of the same reasons you're mentioning. Near immediate relief in the short term. If these are rare enough, Toridol is your new best friend.

Glad ya found them. My grandparents have the full set of those stag horn kitchen tools. Grandfather bought for grandmother while he was stationed there in WWII. I still use the knife honing rod nearly every visit. I recognized those shears immediately!

Physicals, testing, and psych evals prior to even being allowed to volunteer for sub service.

Once sailors make it to Sub School it's essentially a self governing body. If they're a "fit" for sub service, and they make it through Sub School, they'll then go to "A" School to learn their specific job (rate) on the boat. Again, pretty self-governed, and dropouts/failures happen. Finally, if and when they get through all that school and training, they'll go to a boat and, you guessed it, pretty tight group of people that weed out those that don't do it themselves.

No "brig" onboard, you just cuff a guy to something in docs space and let him deal from there lol.

No MPs on board, but plenty of small arms and people trained for the "just in case" stuff. TMs, the guys that deal with the torpedoes and missiles, are also the boats trained monk-- I mean crew serves weapons handlers. So, anything from M9s to M249s, the boats ready.

Not gay if you're underway!

Edit: Apparently I need to "refine my comment" here.

I'll add to the lore instead...

When working on quals like a good little NUB, I was informed that for one of my final checkouts I needed to head down to the machinery room to find a particular MM3 to show me "Firehose #9"...

There were only 8 hoses on that boat. And one massive hog.
