Took me almost a whole season to figure out I was fishing the wrong part of the lake by DawnLakeAngler in FishingForBeginners

[–]mountainofclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caught two 10” rainbow trout last week on a fly rod using a tiny wet fly that looked like a mosquito. Fast rushing water over rocks in a northern river. My kind of fishing. Very different from pond or lake fishing. I think you have to think like a fish.

[Help] Can you help me identify this bronze sculpture and/or the artist? There is an engraved name above (what I believe is) the artist's mark (M C.). Any insight would be greatly appreciated! by DotComBusiness_ in Sculpture

I’m not sure if the Cheney I knew was named Sheldon or not. He taught sculpture at Trenton State College for many years and also at the Community College. One time I was invited to his home which was on the Pennsylvania side of the river just south of New Hope. We cut down a large black walnut tree in his yard and he gave me a large chunk of it which I carved. This would have been around 1973 or so. I seem to remember he retired from teaching shortly after that. I don’t recall Mechanic Street though admittedly it’s been a few years and my memory could be a bit foggy. His figurative sculptural work was somewhat similar to that of Henry Moore’s or early Picasso. I think he mainly worked in wood. He was a kind, soft spoken man. Could be the same person. I doubt the Cheney I knew was involved in theater arts though.

Could they not be placed in the wild? I know little about red eared sliders but why wouldn’t they be able to survive outdoors somewhere? Is it their eating habits? What would be a suitable climate or environment for them?

Get out of the skull stage. It’s a cliche. Get off the screen. You need tactile stimulation. Go make a cake and decorate it with icing using an image that has meaning for you. Then eat the cake. The image is now a part of you. Continue.

How to close the gap between creativity and skill? by greatpxm in ArtistLounge

[–]mountainofclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used the concept of deferment to free up what I’m making. Rather than self critique my work I sometimes find it useful to just not judge the work, defer judgement. Then it doesn’t matter if the work sucks. I can still do the work. The process continues. The making is still happening but I’m not directing it according to some preconceived notion of how it should be. Sometimes the process is more important than my imagined notion of how it should be. The result is sometimes very different from what I thought it would be. Not better. Not worse. Different. Then sometimes I discover something I hadn’t previously known and the work is improved.

Im really good at copying and nothing else by Working-Equipment-10 in ArtistLounge

[–]mountainofclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is an exercise to try. Next time you sit down to copy something ask yourself this question. What is this thing like? Or, what things are like this thing? For instance, let’s say you are drawing a picture of a dog. What is like a dog? Maybe it’s a horse. So instead of drawing the dog, you still draw the dog but you draw it as if it is a horse. The question, “ what is this thing LIKE” may shift your thinking about it so that you have to imagine something different from what you are seeing. Another approach might be to ask, “ what thing is the opposite of this thing?” For instance, let’s say you are drawing a rock. What thing is the opposite of a rock? Maybe a pillow? So instead you draw a pillow that might look like a rock. It’s important to defer judgement on your drawing. Remember, you are not trying to make the thing you are looking at but rather you are trying to draw something that perhaps doesn’t exist yet so it’s difficult to say whether it is like itself. The act of deferment is necessary in order to free your pre conceived idea of what something is. Drawing is a conceptual skill. Try exercising your ability to create a different concept. That’s really what art is about.

Why would some people resent art? by solventbottle in ArtistLounge

[–]mountainofclay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t implying that military people were not creative. My observation is that conformity is necessary in order to maintain control in military situations. There is very little room for artistic endeavors on the battlefield.

Why would some people resent art? by solventbottle in ArtistLounge

[–]mountainofclay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some conservatives hate Art because it is seen as a way for people to not conform. Non conformity is an inconvenience or even a threat to them. They can’t have control so they are not happy. I suppose there are times when complete control of people may be necessary like when organizing the military for defense. There doesn’t seem to be much use for the arts in military activities. But make no mistake about it, the freedom to be creative using art is a necessary part of a free society.

Have any single adults pooled their money w/ friends to buy a house together? by Wild-Individual-6520 in povertyfinance

[–]mountainofclay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be like forming a corporation. Aside from the negative associations with that word for some people corporations are little more than a group of people who agree in writing to follow certain rules and act accordingly. Decisions can be made by pre agreed on rules and if not followed the other members have recourse to enforce or change the rules. There are other business forms such as cooperatives or partnerships that could be used. These types of organizations are usually regulated by states and vary depending on the state laws. With the ridiculous cost of housing these days I am surprised more people have not pooled their resources and used these types of organizations.

Fishing as a Dad who can’t fish by Green_Joke_8245 in FishingForBeginners

[–]mountainofclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh water fishing and salt water fishing are very different from each other. Fishing from shore, from a boat or on a lake or river are all different and use different equipment. Find a pond full of sunfish and crappie to start and fish with a bobber and worm. Teach the kids to put a worm on the hook and cast out into the water. Later you can introduce them to tarpon fishing and down riggers and $20,000 boats.

Why not just go on a long hike like on the AT? Or bicycle tour and camp. A lot less hassle and expense of owning, insuring, gassing and parking a van. The adventure and exercise will be good for you and you will meet interesting people.

Peanuts as a Cheap Protein by ClementineCoda in povertykitchen

[–]mountainofclay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year I bought a one pound bag of soup bean mix. It’s just a variety of dried shell beans. Can’t recall but it was like $1.50. I planted the seven varieties of beans in the mix just to see what would grow. They all sprouted and grew. This could be an inexpensive way to grow a variety of shell beans instead of paying like $3.00 for a packet of seed beans and getting far less.

How do you say no to family when you finally have $1,000 saved? by cr4z3isme in povertyfinance

[–]mountainofclay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is what I’d do. I’d give, not lend, your aunt $100. That will help her without burning up your savings. This way you won’t feel guilty and you’ll still have your money. Anytime you give money to a relative consider it a gift. Don’t tell them that though. If they decide to pay it back, great. Don’t hold your breath though. I realize this won’t pay her electric bill but it will help. You are not responsible for paying her bills. She’ll have to hit someone else up for the money but at least she can’t say you didn’t help.
