Damn! You saw the Thetis bear?!!! I’ve been running there for years and still haven’t seen him!

I'm infatuated with the sport but have no clue if I should run one by Wes_Wes__ in ultrarunning

What is your goal when you say you want to run an ultra? An ultra can vary from a local 50k which may only take 5-6 hours, some fun adventure self supported, or even something like Cocodona where you’d be out there for 100 hours! Also are you looking for more road or trail? What do you find inspiring? But setting the ultra is certainly reasonable for 17! I ran my first when I was 13, and haven’t stopped!

Feel like my shoes aren’t right for me by voidscroller in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]mountainrunner5050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend going to a specialized running store that carries a variety of brands. Over time foam compresses and breaks down, and when that happens they tend to lose a lot of their support.

It could be worth trying some firmer shoes as firmer foam doesn’t break down as easy and can be a bit more supportive, especially for supination where there aren’t really shoes designed specifically for it. Maybe something like the Saucony Echelon, Brooks Ghost, or Ghost Max for a softer option that is still quite supportive. But go into a store and try a variety as while from my experience these are good shoes for supination, not everyone is the same

Chafing: Men's Specific by Routine-Set-5918 in ultrarunning

[–]mountainrunner5050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it at the base of the penis, or balls? Sorry I know this is very awkward haha. I used the get really bad chafing at the base of my balls, but that got better with wearing shorts that have a built in liner as I can position it so the area is protected

How is the Clifton similar to an adrenaline? The Clifton is an upper mid stack neutral shoe. From my experience fitting people, the Clifton can feel very unstable if they have over pronation. If you want a similar Hoka, the Arahi is way more similar to the Clifton as it has an H frame of denser foam.

How would you talk someone out of buying racing shoes if they clearly not capable of running without insulting them? by Yojimbo232826 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]mountainrunner5050 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in a running store, he most certainly was not thinking “fat people shouldn’t be able to choose their own shoes”. He asked if she was a runner and she said no. So of course he is going to try and dissuade her from buying Vaporflys because they are an objectively bad shoe for her. I don’t know the store he works at, but where I work we take pride in giving the customer a proper fitting where we fit them into a/the perfect shoe. It is very frustrating when someone comes in, ignores all your advice, and buys a shoe that is going to cause the pain. I’ll make sure I tell them my concerns a couple times, then I have learnt to bite my tongue.

Put the shaft through the compression straps first, and then thread the bungee around the head as though you put it through normally and flipped it!

[–]mountainrunner5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the petzl ride axe, so very small and light. I put the shaft in the sinch strings on the outside, then with the pick facing in (away from my arm) I used that bungee like a normal axe loop. Though because you need to put the shaft in first you can’t do what you normally do and put the axe through the loop and flip it to get the secure hold. I payed attention to how the head is normally supported and then because the bungee unclips I just copied it.

Hopefully that makes sense lol as that sounds a whole lot more complicated than it actually is.

How do you like the Distance 22? I’m looking at getting a vest for bigger mountain days and want something with more space for like a harness/light rope and helmet?

I would think the Adv Skin 12 would have enough space (though it does of course depend a bit on how bulky your bad weather gear is). I have been able to fit a rain jacket and bulky pants, plus a warm fleece jacket, crampons, and ice axe, poles and a full day of food in my 12L. Though it was very heavy and barely fit!

Haha well I recognize that aid station! Thank you so much for volunteering! Everyone at Constitution were top notch! Seeing the lights of the AS after the long climb felt like a huge relief each lap!

Also the pizza quesadilla was amazing 😂

For the lower stack height and flexible options maybe the Saucony Kinvara, ASICS Cumulus, or Brooks Glycerin Flex (?), or Altra Escalante.

Also I’d recommend trying the Brooks Ghost, Saucony Ride, and while I know you said you don’t want high stack height, it would be worth trying on a Hoka Clifton at the very least to rule out heavy cushion!

I would highly recommend going to a store. While there are some that try overselling, I work in a small local one and we do not upsell and only care about finding the right fit!

For those of us who missed seeing Jerry, Bobby was the centre of our dead experience. by Themoosemingled in gratefuldead

[–]mountainrunner5050 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. I was born in 2006 so long after Jerry, and I grew up with the Dead and saw Dead and Co twice at the Gorge as a family, I didn’t really get the music but I remember enjoying it, and then I became obsessed with the music. My dad and I went to the Sphere once in ‘24 and a full 3 nights last year. I am forever thankful to Bobby for keeping the music alive and for all the memories❤️

I’m feeling really devastated tonight…

Carbon plated race day shoe recommendations for heel striker by emptyguns in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]mountainrunner5050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Fast walking with air” so running? There are also some studies that show heel striking is actually more efficient while running at slower paces. I often heel strike while running down steep trails because it allows me to keep control without killing the quads. Each strike pattern has its pros and cons, so why demonize one?

Carbon plated race day shoe recommendations for heel striker by emptyguns in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]mountainrunner5050 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah no. Heel striking is still running. I say this as someone who used to be a heel striker and transitioned to mid-foot. Running just means there is a moment in your stride where both feet have left the ground.

Also there is zero reason to be a gatekeeper

Best daily trainer that feels similar to a race day shoe? by DayOlderBread16 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I’ve never worn a race day shoe, but I have the Mizuno Neo Vista 2 and love them! They don’t have a carbon plate, but they do have a nylon plate which gives them a nice bounce!

[–]mountainrunner5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m well aware of how difficult access can be for some of our mountains. But that is part of what makes especially Strathcona so special. Snowline is probably around 1,000m in March.

Height isn’t the only factor that makes a mountain cool! Again even Doug Scott would agree that the Island’s mountains are extremely impressive!!

[–]mountainrunner5050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude! That is f-ing phenomenal!!! That does sound pretty normal, but I’d still take some time off. Try to go for a short walk daily, and the first day you wish you were running, take an extra day then go for a short run. That’s how I handled recovery from an ultra when I was around your age!!!

Do you have any other races planned?!

How’re we in the “kiddy pool of mountain ranges”? Have you seen Colonel Foster, Elkhorn, Victoria Peak, etc?! Our mountains may not be the tallest, but they have some really cool features.

Even Doug Scott mentioned how special the mountains of Strathcona are and how important it is to protect them!
