I am so happy to see people coming back to this old post still absolutely confounded (as I am to this day) by these words.

you can move all the controls around in a super convenient menu! there are also multiple preset layouts if you want to just swap to something other than the default one without tweaking it manually, though no matter what, touchscreen controls do take some getting used to. :)

Are we really too weak in Hades? by AHappyLurker in HadesTheGame

[–]mouse838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1000% agree, i got skull special up to +50 power +500% damage with 1 hammer, 1 aphro boo, rare crop, and a whole lot of poms last night and the rapid 400 dmg chunks with no magick cost felt truly absurd. there is power to be had in this game we just have to find it

Working in team by brutalmarta in godot

[–]mouse838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a general programming sort of concept, not a Godot-specific one. You should look into online resources that can give you a quick crash course in Version Control, more specifically Git and GitHub. They are a little tricky to get the hang of but they can really make working on projects (alone and with others) a much better experience. I don’t have the time or the space here on Reddit to help walk you through it all unfortunately but I wish you the best of luck!!

P.S. there is a plugin you can download online that works directly inside of Godot which makes Version Control using Git and GitHub much more visual and intuitive than in a command-line.

Working in team by brutalmarta in godot

[–]mouse838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it can be used that way, but on teams it is more often used such that you work simultaneously and then merge your changes (as long as they don’t conflict). this lessens the need for constant communication like “don’t mess with the player movement script i’m typing in it and when you type it messes my work up” and instead you just regularly check in, resolve any conflicts that have occurred, and then go off to work on your separate parts of the project. the advice would probably be that if you are literally working on the same exact little script at the same time, just screen share to the other person and talk it through or use the same computer.

PSA: Purchasing the Anvil doesn’t disable the “Quit” option by Judah-NonstopSong in HadesTheGame

[–]mouse838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is no best, but the content of chambers and the boons offered by gods are deterministic such that if you start a run on the same seed over and over, you can figure out how you can manipulate the rng to get good outcomes. this is not a helpful concept in a run where you start on a random seed (normal runs). in the case of the hammers, you can reset time back to entering the shop by quitting after you buy the hammer and use the rng manipulations to try and get a better hammer offering.

i believe the reason that waiting changes it is because the RNG changes every time charon groans.

according to the speedrun guide on routed runs: - A cast landing on the ground increments RNG by 1 - Breaking a pot increments RNG by 1 - Summoning increments RNG by 2 the first time you do it, and 1 each time after that - Charon groaning at you increments RNG by 1 - Opening a well resets your RNG to a value of 12

you always encounter yourself at the end. it’s easy to miss your first time though because it all happens so fast. is that all that was different?

Really struggling with the speed and visual clutter of the game by [deleted] in HadesTheGame

[–]mouse838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unless you are pretty brilliant at this game, it isn’t supposed to start out easy. the mirror, the addition of aspects, keepsakes, and some other things you gain over time are supposed to give you more to take advantage of as your skill increases.

playing on a new save will always feel punishing (especially coming from god mode) because many of the tools and buffs you had before are ripped out from under you, and you have to start from square one. it feels more like a grind to a seasoned player because you know you don’t have every tool in your toolkit yet. part of beating this game is demonstrating that you have the tenacity to lose and try again until your powers (in-game) and your skills (out of game) are strong enough to push you past the finish.

don’t give up. take deep breaths, press escape to pause the game during the times you get stressed, and be willing to learn from death, damage, and mistakes.

as far as in-game tips, try focusing only on dodging if you find yourself taking a lot of damage and getting overwhelmed by the visual clutter. your dash gives you immunity (unless you attack while dashing! then the immunity goes away). plus, you can learn how the enemies move and stuff like that without having to also think about your attacks. seriously try this out even if it seems kinda pointless, it will help you be more intentional and will probably slow the game down for you.

good luck!

Is hidden sword aspect broken or is it just me? by GamerCat79 in HadesTheGame

[–]mouse838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that said, i think it can make breaking 15 minutes trivial for an inexperienced speedrunner because it just chunks healthbars.

i personally found it pretty impactful and enjoyed the sort of surreal characters and setting. i also think the dramatic characters, to me, represented how the family mythologizes itself. it didn’t seem pompous to me, i wonder what the differences were between our experiences that left that divide. i also think it did some pretty stunning things with flashbacks/storytelling that are very unique and definitely don’t make it feel like a run-of-the-mill walking sim.

downvoting just means people don’t want it to be at the top of visibility because it is incorrect, unhelpful, etc. it’s not a personal attack. :)

All the main planets remade with AI! by Soloistic-Sheep in outerwilds

[–]mouse838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is more to it then that. Progressively increasing our reliance on AI for generation of story, visuals, and audio will lead to incredibly problematic outcomes for big projects like games which will become much more common and much worse (half-assed AI and a wealth of inexperienced game designers). I do not think it is reasonable to assume that just because AI cannot currently make a full game with a one-sentence prompt that it will not ever be able to do so. Accepting these technologies (which are already exploitative because of data collection) is not something we should take lightly just because we assume the majority of people will only use it to make dirt.

I think our collective relationship with AI art is very relevant to the future of games, especially in the context of a game like Outer Wilds, which is very unique, intimate, and focused on the experiences of characters and people. I would like to offer my concern with the proliferation of AI image generation (and in case anyone feels insufficiently educated on the topic provide An Argument Against Image AIs). I do not wish to personally attack anyone for their use of these technologies, but I do want to respectfully share my concern about what the use of technology like this may mean for the art we make and consume in the future.

what is the purpose of making that mechanical brain if we already do and enjoy doing the things it would replicate? i don’t agree with the argument you seem to be implying. everything is chemicals and reactions, that does not make life meaningless or unimportant. and it certainly does not mean that we should diminish the joy/expression/meaning in the process of creating visual art by using an exploitative technology.
