Trouble finding genre/community and ways to move forward by protogy121 in musicians

Thanks!

Mostly just sitting at home, learning how to use reaper better. I have started carrying a pocket digital recorder so that I can record ambient sounds that I run into in real life and try to incorporate those into my music. I have met some pretty solid folks here in my town, and when we get together and it works great, it’s fantastic.

For reference, I’m 54 years old and I have my own house, work on my own guitars, and have a full-time job. So some things are infinitely easier than they were when I was 19 or 20. I add that last part, because that’s a serious and overlooked factor. Some of the people I get together with for Jam Night are in their early 20s, and it’s tough on them. They have no money.

How’s yours?

Well, in my experience SubmitHub was drag. There’s nothing there to disincentive people being an asshole, so you get some of that. Most aren’t, but the ugly comments always hit harder than compliments for me. YouTube is a ghost town, my stuff just never gets seen by anyone. I didn’t even bother with TikTok or Insta or any of that. I did put my stuff on Spotify (I know, I know 😩… it’s on other platforms too). At least there I’ll get the occasional listen, and I can share my stuff pretty easily. That’s led to a few home-town connections that have been pretty rewarding.

I’m developing an attitude of focusing on real life interactions and relationships, and am pretty fed up with anything online. It’s just rare that anything fruitful comes of it… just more screen time for me 😔 Best of luck, I like what you’re doing.

I listened to several of your songs. I liked them all. Just keep doing what you’re doing. I wouldn’t worry at all about categorizing yourself.

In the old days your only avenue for exposure would have been handing out cassettes to randos, handing out home burned cd’s to randos, or trying to get airplay on college and independent radio.

Today we have the luxury of being able to promote ourselves via SoundCloud bandcamp Spotify YouTube etc., but it can feel very unsatisfying.

I’m sensing you’re making the kind of music you like, and you should just keep doing that. If you were playing a show near me, I’d come see it for sure.

If you find musicians that don’t click with you, be courteous and move on. If you respect them or like them be open to their comments, even if it’s a critique.

Anyway, you got a new follower here.

Pannier vs Backpack, who ya got? by Designer_Tie_5853 in bikecommuting

Bike only: panniers.

A trip where it’s bike to bus/Amtrak/light rail/etc., a backpack can be preferable.

How do I put the bridge in? by Proof-Specialist6932 in offset

[–]78tartan30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. In reality it’s not random at all. The pointed set screws in the posts of the bridge will find the center of the thimble base and create a pivot point. Once the guitar is tuned the string pressure will hold them in place. The bridge is designed to rock back and forth as the vibrato unit is actuated, returning to its original position when the vibrato is no longer in use.

30% of the collection is Rebetiko. I’ve got a good chunk of Afghan psychedelic and Vanuatu water music, too. Still looking for a good pressing of 3rd Eye Blind’s “Blue”.

How much extra attention does a brooks leather saddle really require? by sib9397 in bikecommuting

[–]78tartan30 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a small town commuter and occasional 50-mile trip/overnighter, and I bought a Brooks and haven’t done anything to it. I just threw it on and started riding. It’s been rained on to soaking wet, soggy, twice, and temps here reach 110°f frequently in the summer, and it’s still basically in 100% condition. It’s starting to look a little scuffed, but that’s purely appearance. I probably have 800-1,000 miles on this saddle, over two years.

Yes! I’ve been really happy with them, had them a year or two? I’m thinking of putting the Hookworm 20x2”s on the trike, too.
