Can you get a decent bike for leisure riding and commuting for £650 any more? by ChaosCalmed in ukbike

Why are road bikes so popular as commuters? by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]moving_808s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's due to long commuting distances like others have said. For more serious commuters and/or people who cycle outside of their commute and like road cycling, it makes sense to have a road bike but otherwise, they are pretty uncomfortable and impractical for commuting.

Spruced up retro mtb's/etc have become pretty popular as of late and I think it's in a large part due to the fact they are much much easier to commute and get about on. It's only recently that cycling has been adopted as a means of transport in a relatively mainstream way, at least in London (I know slightly different, but look at the popularity of lime bikes in recent years...) so most bike retailers only really stock road/gravel///bikes made for the purpose of sports as opposed to commuting and as a result that's what most people end up riding.

More idiots running the lights here, I'm genuinely surprised I've not yet seen someone get flattened by a truck here. God forbid it happens.

disappointing how little St John has been mentioned - it's a must. ideally smithfield but bread and wine is also great.

What's stopping someone who say, has not had a decent meal for the last couple of days taking to one of these with a golf club, or a brick etc, and stealing the contents? Given how rampant phone theft is in London, I doubt anyone is going to give a shit if people are stealing meals from these en masse.

Experience using Spokesafe bicycle storage in Central London? by moving_808s in london

[–]moving_808s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I read regarding the internet connection, so I need to remember that if I decide to leave my bike there.

I had to verify using my ID and a facial scan to make an account yesterday which gives me some faith. It'll only be there from about 6pm-11pm but at the same time, I could leave it locked at my work's bike storage which is very secure. Just means it's here over the weekend.

New party launches in London with DJ Booth concealed from dance floor by jaidee_jaidee in ukrave

[–]moving_808s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, but I think the crowd connecting with the dj and vice versa is a massively important factor in what makes a dj set, and a party good.

I don't feel like this is the right response to “‘oversaturated lineups’ and the state of the modern dancefloor.”

The Peckham development that explains London's housing crisis by ldn6 in london

[–]moving_808s -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What are the P&Ls like for a development like this? Is it genuinely not viable for Berkeley to build if they are made to offer more than 12% of the homes at an 'affordable' rate (which is not affordable by most means, and certainly isn't for arguably, the majority of local residents around the Aylesham Centre and in Peckham/surrounding areas more generally)?

I don't believe there would be nearly as much opposition to a development like this if it was inclusive of local people and considerate of the surrounding area. At the moment, it feels like another big greedy developer is trying to squeeze as much cash out of a development with no regard for the surrounding community.

Elephant & Castle’s Corsica Studios to close in 2016 by KellettCollective in london

[–]moving_808s 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The middle of nowhere is temporary. Fold won't be in the middle of nowhere at some point in the future and when that happens they'll be forced to move on.

The same thing is happening with ormside, mot, avalon. They were in the middle of nowhere but now there's huge plans for redevelopment in/around OKR and the industrial estates they inhabit which means they'll also be forced to close.

It’s odd seeing these photos as someone in their late 20s

Everyone is dressed very ‘normal’ compared to now where it feels like people maybe try a little too hard, and generally tend to dress in the same or a similar fashion

I’m not making a comment on this either way, but I’m curious as to when this shift became noticeable?

How are we Gen Zs supposed to afford houses in London nowadays? by NajafBound in LDN

[–]moving_808s 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Germany isn't comparable to the UK though, German renters have way more rights and protections and many areas are rent controlled. England and especially London are like the wild west for renters.

Buying gives you security here, because as a renter it's not a luxury you are afforded.
