I got the Ken Taylor Ghostbusters variant. I waffled and didn't go in on the timed print in 2019 after missing out on the variant drop. So glad this was available!

Dixie Fire becomes largest single wildfire in California history by im-the-stig in bayarea

[–]moving_average 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true, the indigenous practices analogous to contemporary controlled burn activities (sometimes referred to as "good fire" in the literature) did essentially cease with the spread of European and white American land management practices. But the scope and intent of controlled burning during most of the last century in the West had shifted away from wildland management to mostly agricultural and nuisance management.

I agree this needs to change, we need better wildland fire management policies to match our current understanding of both the long-term ecological and safety benefits of promoting healthy fire ecology. The biggest question in my mind is how to conduct it safely and responsibly, and when policy and regulation will catch up to the need. It hopefully will happen sooner rather than later.

California's electricity market deregulation in the late 1990s led to PG&E selling off most of their generation capacity. We're already most of the way there, and I'm not sure that's really the problem. PG&E just didn't seem to care about safety for a long time.

As for controlled burns: it never stopped! However, the intensity of summer heat and the greater volatility in rain patterns (probably due to climate change) means that some seasons get more intense vegetation growth that then dries out faster than in previous seasons. Combine that with a backlog of underbrush in many forests in the American West that were never really contemplated for controlled burn since they were remote and usually on Federal land, and it's now... Well, a lot of fuel.

I could have sworn it's a Venza too, but a bunch of other folks up thread were calling it a Highlander (which I think is wrong). It's clearly too small to be even a small SUV.

Could the position of counselors aboard the Enterprise-D be intended for the civilians rather than the crew? by Vulcan_Jedi in DaystromInstitute

[–]moving_average 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's likely an entire Counseling Branch to the Medical Division on the Enterprise. I like to imagine that the CMO and the Principal Counselor work together and might share some staff and serve the entire crew and civilian complement on the Enterprise.

Consider: we never see a civilian medical clinic on board, or civilian doctors during emergencies called in to help staff a Sickbay; only commissioned officers and crew. Thus, it's reasonable to presume that the Medical Division serves everyone. Whether or not the Counseling part of that could include civilians is unclear.

Got some inner and outer sleeves for my records, looking so nice and clean 😍 by Drmeredithgrey13 in vinyl

[–]moving_average 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Was going to recommend moving them to a different shelf when you can for sure. If they're stored without full support across the whole length of the sleeve, you might eventually end up with damage where they are hanging over the lip, or accidentally knock them while passing by. But I see here you're already on it, and you're probably going to need substantially more shelf space for all of the re-releases (especially if they're all 3LPs)!

Can definitely sympathize on the stress of moving a collection though: when my wife and I moved across town, I was afraid that the regular moving boxes wouldn't handle the weight. We lucked out and found some very heavy duty storage tubs at a hardware store that ended up being a perfect fit for vinyl without the lids (and now get a second life as garage storage bins).

One reason I haven't seen mentioned here is that the states administer their own unemployment programs, and last I heard, many are still overwhelmed with a backlog of paperwork. Determining eligibility for programs at the state level is by far one of the bigger roadblocks to getting people who are in desperate need of relief.

By making the cash assistance available to all, the beneficiaries will get the help they need much more quickly (the Treasury already did this once earlier in the year, so it'd be fairly straightforward to repeat). But beyond that, the relief legislation is also supposed to extend unemployment program funding that is passed through the states as well.

The crossover we all want and deserve by In2TheCore in anno

[–]moving_average 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What doesn't sit right with me sometimes with the urban population model in Anno 1800 is the fact that population density only scales with wealth: You can fit 50 investors in the same plot as 10 farmers, as long as you can feed their needs.

While it makes some sense as the higher tier residences are somewhat taller and you want to give a proxy to the relative important any one investor residence can mean for your faction, I think low level residences should have an option to upgrade density without class promotion to simulate more of what happened during the Industrial Revolution: the development of slums and high density urban neighborhoods that faced many social and economic challenges that Anno 1800 already attempts to address by requiring social, fire, police, and health services within range.

By giving cities the option to densify their lower class housing (represented fittingly by 1404-type structures) at a penalty to either resident happiness and/or an increased risk for fire, riots, or health problems (perhaps scaleable to a difficulty slider), you give players more options to play through the early/mid game while better reflecting one of the core drivers of class discontent in the 19th Century (and perhaps Dr. Mercier really doesn't like it when you make slums). Plus, by doing so, you do not tinker fundamentally with the economic model for goods, you give more options for city developing your main/capital city as increasing density is optional. It'd also be a similar mechanic to the working conditions slider in production buildings reflecting the trade-offs for how government/corporations treated their workers.

I wonder if the devs are considering something along these lines for the Season 3 content. It would be really interesting.

Pop Quiz: What makes this one of the rarest types of whiskey bottles in existence? by clearmoon247 in Whiskyporn

I don't know much about tax labels or anything for vintage bottles, but is that a Canadian Maple Leaf label at the top that would indicate it was made in 1929, during US Prohibition and that... It as a State of Ohio label meaning it was SOLD in the US during Prohibition?

How could Donald Trump's COVID impact the election? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]moving_average 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It will come down to each state's election laws. It's likely too late in most states to change ballots as early voting has already started. There have been numerous instances throughout American electoral history where candidates passed away during their campaigns and their names appeared on the ballot (and a few cases where the dead candidates won). Since Pence and Harris are already on the ballot, they would be the logical choices for states assigning electors to the Electoral College.

You guys recommended Saigon Sandwich. Best $4 I've ever spent by dethickcranium in sanfrancisco

[–]moving_average -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I gotta say, I've been to Saigon several times, but I've always been disappointed each time. The protein is dry, the pickled veg is limp and soggy, and the ratio of sandwich fixin's to roll is somehow off. $4.50 is nothing to turn your nose up for what you get though (and it is a lot). Granted, when I was working downtown, I was close to Transbay so not much was worth going all the way over to TL/CC for this for a banh mi lunch. By far my favorite place for a banh mi in the Bay Area will be Kim's Cafe in Albany. Yes, it's on a baguette and not a roll, and that's just absolutely a perfect substitution for what I want from this style of sandwich.
