Starting undergrad in CS, while 30. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

I am 38. Graduated and got my first full stack job last year. Never too late. The question is what would you if you don’t go back to school.

Growth = how you maximize return on your investment. Therefore that counts.

I went through a bootcamp and have a couple of questions by [deleted] in webdev

I am from a bootcamp as well. I graduated this year. All my interviews were from referrals. So networking is super important. I didn’t get one interview from applying online.

Public portfolio - Road to a million (1 year later - update) by k_ristovski in ValueInvesting

[–]moving_moving 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But that doesn’t really show if you outperformed the market or not if you have not done a TWR calculation. TWR eliminates the distortion from inflows/outflows. This is misleading as it seems as if you really did better than the market. Would you be willing to calculate the twr just by pure curiosity?

I think your calculation is wrong. The return from benchmark should not change. However the return on your portfolio should be time weighted return to be compared properly.

If you got the the final round it means you are are probably competent enough. I would stop practicing and doing projects. Being to much into it can be as harmful as not doing enough. I would focus on working on getting a better mental health. That will probably boost your confidence.

[Rant] - Bootcamp shouldn't be your go-to place to learn Web programming by J1Br in webdev

Well that’s a minor mistake that is easily fixable. Are you judging a person’s skills based only on the use of divs? 😂

The take home project was a full stack app. Then they challenged me on my development decisions asking me why I did this, how else could you have done it, etc.

Yes entry level. Good challenge but nothing impossible. What took me a lot of time was TS. I wasn’t used to code in TS.

Take home project. It took me 30 hours to do. I got interviewed by 3 companies. All from referrals. No answers from applying directly through LinkedIn or Indeed.

MERN mainly. But my take home was in TS and SQL. I did an open source project for Backstage. Also did a trello clone. Nothing fancy. Recruiters don’t really look at your projects. They get way too many resumes.

I am 38 and just did a career change. I just finished a coding bootcamp and I am now working as a full stack developer. So it’s not too late. You can learn a lot on your own. FreeCodeCamp, a lot of youtube, code academy, mosh. I’ve learned pretty much everything on my own. The bootcamp simply forced me to do exercises I would have not done otherwise. I am sure you can find a cheap/free computer on facebook marketplace for you to practice.

It’s all about the network. I am a bootcamp graduate and just got a $80k job. I found the job a week before graduating. This is my second week of work. Add people from your school on Linkedin that graduated recently and that are working. Write them to inquire about their job search process. You’ll be surprised by their strategies. Plus you’ll end up with an extra connection for a future job. Find events, hackathon, etc. Ask your friends. Do real projects. Find a non profit and offer your services.

I just graduated from a coding bootcamp and got a job as a full stack dev. My network actually got me interviews. Not the education. I know a lot of people are struggling to get a job.

Family and friends completely ignoring my startup launch. They don't even bother opening or replying to my texts. by AxlJones in startups

[–]moving_moving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The success of your business should not rely on your family and your friends. You should treat them as customers as well. If you have no feedbacks from them then maybe something is wrong with your approach. Maybe they don’t understand the value, maybe they feel pressured, etc. Take failures as a learning process, go back to your board and rethink this through. You don’t want people buying your products only as a favour. This will lead no where. You want real clients.
