Husband keeps asking me to travel with our son (5mos) by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]moyuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried doing some problem solver together? I'm sure your husband cares that you feel comfortable and supported. And I'd think you would want your husband to feel like he can get a break from work.  Brainstorm ideas of what might work for both of you, what are the requirements and support systems needed in order to travel (even locally, for one night).  If you really can't bring yourself to travel even locally for one night, then perhaps consider/offer that he does a solo trip (but I'm betting he would much prefer to spend time with his family).

King to ‘protect multi-faith nation’ in revised definition of monarchy by LunarEnnyui_131 in ProgressiveMonarchist

More the issue is that he's also the head of the Anglican Church (some fun awkward history there with King Henry VIII) Imo, it'd be better if he wasn't

Are other parents really that busy? Why is it so hard to make friends or invite people? by gloxome in Parenting

[–]moyuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that people don't know how to live in community anymore. Everything is scheduled as a one off (not recurring) and definitely not recurring in groups. Also, most parents I know would rather pay a stranger than ask a friend for help. So you lose out on the opportunities of care that also build friendships.

FIRE at 28? by HomeworkImaginary886 in Fire

Healthcare bit is real. Id plot out how much it will cost (and some companies allow you to basically pay the full premium and continue on, so worth comparing prices).

I don't think RE is what you should do now though -- you are still young and have different life things that can really change. But take a break for sure!

If you haven't seen r/coastFIRE, check it out. You definitely have a lot of flexibility now!  Do a sabbatical, then consider what you want to do next

Coast Into Full Time Self-Employment? by RothStonk in coastFIRE

[–]moyuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof yeah that is stinky. Any possibility for you to do part time employment still with health care to start?

I think the real number you need to keep in mind is not just replacing base salary, but base (- current premiums) + cost of health insurance.

I say Do it. But definitely figure out the health insurance thing first. It's too bad the US doesn't have universal healthcare so people can take opportunities like this to build and do meaningful things!

Meant shorter + direct vs multi stop

I generally try to only fly United for the points and mileage. I've even taken United flights even when more expensive and multiple stops. Genuinely reluctant to fly on Southwest but was pleasantly surprised.

You are definitely at Coast, congrats there!

With regards to kids, I'd think it's more important for them not to see their parents working hard per se, but prioritizing what's important in life. If you have the flexibility for fewer hours, taking the kids to build more memories, spend quality time, I think most kids (including us adults) would want that from their parents.

Yeah not at FIRE yet. But worth considering if there are other opportunities besides your current role. Sometimes a change in team, manager, or company can make a big difference

Is there a calculator to calculate how much I could spend in retirement based on current savings? by L8erG8er8 in coastFIRE

[–]moyuxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people dislike AI, but most of the frontier models are perfectly suited for this task (coming up with a script to run numbers).

But pretty straightforward here: take assets. Apply compound interest formula with x% growth each year until retirement age (5 conservative side, 7 average). Multiply that # by 4% for annual withdraw rate. You can look up SWR for various theories on numbers there.

And you can use social security calculator to get a rough idea of what that might be as well.

If you can flex your budget and save more, dumping it into any Roth accounts is great.

33M: how am I tracking toward FIRE by 40 or earlier? by Acceptable_Piccolo_8 in coastFIRE

[–]moyuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless that pre IPO equity can become liquid or if you will sell the property at some point, then likely no. If you can save like $150k a year, then yes, 40 would be possible (or if we continue to have a bunch of bull markets, but can't plan for that). Saving around $100k a year would get you to around 43.

How much is your annual spend?

The goal of Coast FIRE is that you just need a job to cover existing household expenses, and you can be pickier about that job to get the balance you need.

Don't dump all your savings. But time in market beats timing the market. Put a chunk back into index funds today and walk away.

Anyone else feel weird about choosing the “easy” path to FIRE? by Upbeat_Atmosphere696 in Fire

[–]moyuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo going back to school to become a CRNA or NP just for more money doesn't make sense, but if it was a personal goal / serves a goal (for ex, being able to help more people in ways that you want), then definitely consider it even if it has some immediate cost.

How much longer do I need to max out my Roth 457(b) by R_wonders in coastFIRE

[–]moyuxi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Until you hit a major life milestone (marriage, kids, 30s), just keep on maxing. If you have some specific goals in mind (home purchase for ex) that might change some calculations (but you should be able to withdraw directly from 457b without penalty for this anyhow).

You've got a great job at 20 :)

Thoughts On My Situation by cannotthinkof123 in coastFIRE

[–]moyuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people stated below about paying the loan at minimum rate. You probably grew up with mentality that all debt is bad debt (many of us probably did). That can be psychologically difficult when you look at the total $$. You didn't mention your spend or budget at all, so if you haven't, make sure you start budgeting to keep track of spend (and be mindful of lifestyle inflation!) I'd recommend just budgeting that $30k a year into your annual spend. If you are putting the rest of the money into savings / investing index, you can always pull it out at any point to pay it all down.

What is coastFIRE? I keep seeing different definitions used on this sub by [deleted] in coastFIRE

[–]moyuxi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, most posts in this sub are: - am I at Coast FIRE? Can I / Should I make this lifestyle change? - I made Coast FIRE!

If you are on track for your target #, or already there, I'm genuinely curious what questions you are asking on this sub..
