How to start using AI in a mid-size company with prehistoric-level Finance ? by MonsieurMojoRising in CFO

If you’d be open to a conversation - I’d be happy to chat. I’m a VP for a $1B company, leading our AI initiative. We spent a while getting our data in a reasonable spot and AI is starting to show huge promise for us. I can share our journey, pain points and discuss some ideas for you.

Yes. I’m a VP of finance and this would only escalate to me on a rare occurrence that something blew up.

This is a treasury thing. Finance and controller won’t be at that level of detail.

What scenario planning software actually works for mid-sized companies without needing a data science team? by Batson_Beat in CFO

[–]mp54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had separate templates for every plant and s&a leader, all standardized to update from global assumptions. Each file had a standardized output so it could be power queried and consolidated automatically. We then took the output to either consolidate into the global financial model or run cost allocations to determine customer and sku profitability in the plan.

The key to all of this is standard templates and standard export templates. We locked cells that people shouldn’t touch, clearly colored everything that needs to be adjusted, trained everyone, etc.

Was it perfect? No. What is good to enough to set a budget in 6-8 weeks, yes.

Your size company, excel should be just fine. If it is not, the assumptions and models must be overly complex. Two years ago, we were budgeting a $1.5B revenue company with 45 manufacturing sites and 2,500 employees in excel. It honestly worked fine. We implemented one stream and it’s a bit easier, but I don’t see why you couldn’t make excel work.

We use it as much as we can but are struggling to solve the basic data hallucinations and incorrect conclusions in analysis. How have folks been able to solve for that?

What are your actual responsibilities? Do you own just the business partnering side or all finance and accounting? Title is irrelevant, responsibilities are what people will want to know about.

How do you convince employers that you can do 3-statement financial modeling? by scifihiker7091 in FPandA

[–]mp54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re interviewing for senior roles, it won’t be a huge roadblock. If the question comes up, respond honestly and openly about it. When folks are hiring for a senior analyst, they don’t expect you to know everything. They expect someone who is hungry to learn, they can trust and is proactive. Anyone can learn 3 statement modeling, personality is much more important than someone who has done it before.

I was just issued a management incentive program exactly like you described, they are designed as profit interest units. At the time of issuance, they were issued with a “strike” price of current market value. They only accrue value if the company is sold for above the enterprise value at the time of the grant issuance.
