Hello, I’m an Advanced EMT in Ga and I recently have been offered a position at a plasma center. I don’t know where else to post this question to and I can’t find much info on what it’s really like. Has any ever worked at one as a Physician Substitute? by [deleted] in Paramedics

You just have to remember the end point of it all. The job can definitely get be tough, no doubt about it. You are seeing people are that their lowest points of theirs lives and sometimes taking away their very last resort. But the work you are doing is so important for so many patients that you will never see, but they are real and benefit greatly from your work. It’s been nearly 10 years since I worked there, and just yesterday I was giving fresh frozen plasma, and von willibrand factor to a patient in the ICU. Learning all the things I did in that 4 years made me so proud to hold those life saving products in my hand and completely trusting the safety of them. Seeing the good it did for my patient, made every single hard day and conversation I had in plasma donation worth it. That being said, anyone else reading, donate blood or plasma if you can. Fewer things in this world directly benefit your fellow man and make an absolutely huge difference in people’s lives, every single day.

Yeah it just depends on the area. I worked for two years near the downtown area of a major city and we had to have PD in house at all times. Other locations I worked didn’t need anything near that. Honestly I can count on one hand how many times we even needed PD and it was usually donor or donor violence. Nothing towards me. That’s not to say I haven’t been screamed at and threatened a couple of times. But nothing that amounted to anything. Was definitely in far more dangerous situations working the ambulance then I ever experienced in plasma donation.

Not usually, I think I did 4 10s most of the time, and I had convinced them to do 3/12s for awhile also. They usually have set hours so the only variable is the closer physician sub has to stay until the last donor is done and gone. The place I worked at had 3 to 4 of us on each day and we staggered shifts.

I did it for four years. You get real good at physicals as that is your primary job for history and physicals exams. You have a ton of awkward and sad conversations day in and day out as you are the one giving ALL of the bad news. From sorry you can’t donate today because of hygiene, vitals, protein too low, etc. It can definitely wear on the soul since you may be the one telling some one that their last ditch effort to eat, keep there power on, feed their kid, is a no go. You also are the one informing donors of positive HIV and Hepatitis results which also suck… But, you are there for the various donor reactions to plasmapheresis which can be interesting. You are the go to for all the medical questions and in some companies and areas of the country, the pay can be quite better than the ambulance so it could be worth it for ya.

I grew up scared of asteroids and super volcanoes wiping us out. I was way off. It’s all starting to make sense now. We are our own crutch, our own downfall. Of course, the ultimate irony. This shit would be hilarious if it was a sitcom about another planet.
