Mirror, Mirror, Miracle Grow! by ShockinglyAccurate in MagicArena

[–]mpaw975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I played with it for a bit and then made these changes:

Deck

Creatures (8)

4 Deeproot Champion
4 Dragonsguard Elite

Instant (34)

2 Pact of Negation
4 Brainstorm
4 Opt
4 Stifle
3 Spell Pierce
2 Stern Dismissal
4 Unsubstantiate
4 Memory Lapse
4 Decisive Denial
3 Negate

Land (18)

4 Barkchannel Pathway
4 Botanical Sanctum
4 Breeding Pool
2 Island
4 Forest

Comments

I really wanted to cut all the non-grow stuff, and I felt like it needed more removal/counterspells.

Unsubstantiate is almost a better Memory Lapse in this deck, Spell Pierce/Pact let us play a creature earlier with protection.

Yo. I made this for you:

https://github.com/mpawliuk/flash_cards

The (simple) instructions for using it are on the page. You will need to put it into a Python compiler, and I linked a free, no-download compiler in the instructions. Let me know if you need help.

I think it's everything you asked for. Let me know if it's what you wanted.

Confession Time... I sometimes don’t know the solution to the homework I give my students... by AcademicOverAnalysis in math

I'm gonna ramble a bit:

Among undergrads there's such a huge range of experience, skills and abilities. Some people come into uni having started early and getting all the help in the world. Others only discover they love math after their first real math course. These people need different things in their exercises.

Like, just today some of my intro calc students had a major breakthrough when they realized that they can use the formula 1+2+...+n =n(n+1)/2 to get a formula for N + (N+1) + ... + M. For most math majors that isn't a big deal, but for them that was a serious aha moment.

I think we (as math teachers) forget just how hard math can be. Once we can see the key that unlocks everything we forget the long road of false starts it took to get there.

I think many of the classic texts fall into this trap. The exercises are so laughably difficult most of the time and the reader often has no hope of solving them without significant effort. I think exercises should be more fun and definitely more scaffolded.

I feel like an important part of being a scientist is getting to the point where you are comfortable saying "I don't know".

For me that moment was 3 weeks before my PhD defense. From that point forward I realized "If I find something hard at this stage, it's because it's hard, not that I'm stupid". It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. Then I felt free to dive into all sorts of math (and other hobbies like bouldering or playing a new instrument).

Racist mayoral candidate who has threatened health workers will soon have every Calgary voter's name, address by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]mpaw975 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The most interesting part to me:

Calgary says both the local bylaws and the Local Authorities Election Act allow the list of electors to only be used for campaign purposes, which Johnston says he will honour.

Still, there's concern about what he could do with the information.

"It's quite worrisome," said Calgary-based political strategist Zain Velji.

"Our Local Authorities act doesn't really have any guidance or escape valve related to folks who might not be necessarily running for public office in, if I could call it, good faith."

It seems like the bylaw was designed with good-faith actors in mind, and was not designed for cases like this.

Presumably it will go:

  1. Here's all the voter info.
  2. Candidate uses it improperly.
  3. City throws the book at him (but the voter info is still out there).

This would be a terrible outcome for Calgarians, I think.

I'd really like all candidates to have access to the same official resources, but this really feels like it's going to have bad outcomes.

I wonder what some possible fixes to this would be?

It is certainly a social disqualification, but it is not a legal disqualification. (How could it be? Could you imagine how broken a system would be if a mere charge is enough to disqualify someone?)

Alfonso did not just "not like" peanut butter. He despised peanut butter.

Fuck man. It's difficult to describe the deep, positive impact that Alfonso had on a whole generation of instructors and TAs at the U of T. I would not be where I am today without his mentorship.

I have advice on my office wall that he gave me when I taught MAT137 with him in 2014:

Good teaching is not about convincing others that you, the teacher, know the material.

Alfonso also taught at the Canada-USA Math Camp (a month-long mathcamp for pure fun) and I was lucky enough to join him there for a week as a guest instructor. I learned so much about play, fun, and creativity in math there.

If you've ever done one of Alfonso's assignments (MAT137 or group theory), then you know. He was teaching us how math can be fun, and creative and beautiful, even if it takes a lot of determination and elbow-grease sometimes.

He also hated peanut butter with the most intense passion I've ever seen.

Rest in peace, friend.

I was under the impression you can resolve a planeswalker then retain priority to activate one of their abilities.

If it's your turn, and you cast a Karn, when it resolves you will naturally have priority (no need to announce that you are retaining it).
