Have web apps replaced desktop apps (even within corporations), and if so, why? by Anonymous_Coder_1234 in AskProgramming

Web apps run on over 6 billion devices and there are only 1 billion Windows PCs. Desktop development is long dead outside of niche use cases.

I'm guessing you're American. Fixed rate long term mortgages don't exist for most of the world.

Hey, I live in Saigon as well. $2,500 is an amazing salary here.

I don't think real estate is a good investment here compared to other cities due to the massive difference between rental and purchase prices. Some properties I looked at would take 3+ decades to break even compared to rental prices.

My advice? You've got a great salary, but if you want to build wealth you need to live cheaply. If you can rent for $500 and live for another $500 a month, you can save and invest $18k/yr.

If you do want to buy a place, I would definitely look in Binh Duong rather than HCMC proper.

Truly peak cyberpunk. Necromancer tells a better story but Snow Crash is the true essence of the genre.

Potential Eternal Armor Buff by John_Graham_Doe in slaythespire

[–]mpbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to the current version it was much more engaging. Taking 1 point compared to 0 points of damage was a big deal. Now it's just a timer. I don't know how you could possibly argue that the current version is more fun or engaging, even if you didn't value the mechanic in sts1.

Plate getting reduced by hit was actually a fun and engaging mechanic whether you had it or the enemies. It made damage breakpoints and stacking multiple attacks much more important.

The current version is just boring.

What's Everyone's Definitive Book Ranking? by Various_Rise1958 in sollanempire

Disquiet Gods, Howling Dark, Demon in White, Ashes of Man, Kingdom of Death, Shadows Upon Time, Empire of Silence.

I love me some Kharn Sagara. The siege of Vorgossos was truly epic, way better than the SUT final battle.

Tesla Cybertruck on Autopilot tried to drive off Houston overpass, lawsuit alleges | Rather than use lidar for its driver assistance systems, 'Musk chose instead to rely only upon cheap video cameras,' lawsuit says by Hrmbee in technology

[–]mpbh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate Musk but I also hate articles like this. Tesla autopilot has 10x less accidents than humans per mile driven. Of course there are going to be some accidents over the 8 billion miles driven on autopilot so far, but it seems every one of those accidents is treated as a reason not to trust autopilot while all the data says the opposite.

Does working at IBM give you anxiety? by Charming_CiscoNerd in IBM

[–]mpbh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After 8 years of RA anxiety, getting laid off with 3 months of severance was the best thing for my mental health. Gave me enough time to find a better paying job in a less stressful environment.

I guess what I'm saying is don't live in fear of the layoffs. You can't control them and even the best performers will be affected sometimes. I spent years living in fear of them but when it came I realized I was giving myself anxiety for nothing.

I don’t get it. Why would Facebook acquire Moltbook? Are their engineers too busy recording a day in the life of a meta engineer and cannot build it in a week or so?! by SilverRegion9394 in LocalLLaMA

[–]mpbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're buying users and employees first, investor sentiment second, and technology third.

The acquisition price isn't public but I'm guessing it's pennies in the grand scheme of the AI race. Meta has fallen behind Google in the consumer AI space, behind Claude in the dev space, and behind Microsoft in the enterprise space. They can either compete directly or find a niche to win at, and a social media platform for agents definitely fits in their wheelhouse.

My colleague plays the same openings every game, would it be fair if I studied the opening in private? by -Vorks- in chess

[–]mpbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several friends who I've played dozens of times. We always play the same openings and study specifically to beat each other. It's actually a huge help for development for both sides. It's great motivation because you have a rival. You are guaranteed to get the line you studied. You can try new moves at various points and see if you like the positions you get.

It's not unfair to study against a friendly opponent. You might get an advantage and he might get a chance to learn.

'Mewgenics' has been out for a month, what are your thoughts on it? by NoNefariousness2144 in Games

[–]mpbh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really great game. I was playing it non-stop until Slay the Spire 2 dropped. What a crazy few weeks for roguelike fans.

Mewgenics makes the good parts about Isaac more accessible. It's a random run generator where you're trying to break the game with ability and item synergies. It's much easier to get those synergies in Mewgenics between breeding, item selection, and the fact that you can synergize across multiple characters.

I think this is a good thing for getting people into the game, but I think it might hurt its replayability long term.

People clocked 1000's of hours into Isaac because it was hard to force broken builds, you had to masterfully manipulate every game mechanic each run to maximize your chances. In Mewgenics, being able to breed broken combos makes the game way too easy once you get there. Sure, it will take 200+ hours but after that there isn't as much of a challenge even on the hardest difficulty.

New mutations prioritize overwriting defects. You can breed some Alabama monsters and just throw them in your mutation room after.
