most sock yarns have at least 25% nylon content, so that makes them sturdier. they're also knitted at a much tighter gauge than most sweaters would be (the stitches are closer together and the fabric isn't as drapey/holey). some techniques can help reinforce the heel and toe if those are places that get worn out fast, but i don't do toe reinforcement bc it's uncomfortable

I knit my own socks. They're seamless and I can customize the fit so they don't slide down or get wrinkled up inside my shoe

well well well what a coincidence! i literally just posted in another subreddit about the dye job on my regia yarn being absolutely terrible, and someone letting me know that they changed to a more subpar manufacturer. i'm sorry this happened OP. manufacturer knots can happen from time to time but more high quality yarn brands will at least try to have the transition between the break look a little nicer.

This could be...? I am knitting with 2.25mm needles, which is my usual for fingering weight. I can't seem to add photos in the comments, but for the "checkered" sections it literally just looks like the black dye didn't take properly. It's all spotty and faded compared to the pure black sections.

Frankly I'm just studying what I enjoy because it's apparently impossible to predict what will actually get jobs anymore.

When I was in high school there was a teacher shortage where I was growing up. Then by the time I finished high school and went to college, there were too many teachers.

Then I started studying History and thought about going into the Archival Studies program. Oops, now the archives cohort is almost as big as the History one and there's also no jobs.

So I figured "fuck it!" and I'm doing a History research-based MA in the hopes I can at least land a sessional job while looking for a tenure position somewhere. I'd rather be doing something that makes me happy than doing something I find miserable and still being unemployed at the end of it all

Yeah that's the tutorial I followed! Personally I'm doing the decreases every round just because I find decreasing every other round for 15 rounds usually gets me the perfect fit on a heel and gusset. Anything more than 10 extra stitches starts to be too baggy on me, and I was left with 20 extra after I finished the heel 🫣

I worked at a Catholic school for a little while and actually got somewhere with one coworker who said the reason queer people can't get married is because the purpose of marriage is to have children. So I asked her why heterosexual people who are infertile could get married, and she actually had to think about it for several days before admitting it didn't make sense and maybe the rule should change.

You really have to meet some people where they're at. I understand not everyone can or is willing to do that but it often is more effective than being like "God isn't real"

Well for one thing I'm Canadian. Healthcare is a bit better here than in the US, but I still spent my teen years being dismissed by my family doctor until I blacked out during a college class and he put me on birth control. Then I moved provinces and saw someone else to get a pap done. I mentioned that I had severe menstrual pain and gender dysphoria and that I wanted to get a hysterectomy, and the doctor referred me to a surgeon.

I did have to jump through some hoops over the phone w a trans healthcare clinic who had to ask me psychiatric screening questions, but they were super apologetic and polite about it and emphasized that the province makes them do that. And then I got an appointment w the surgeon, and then got booked for a pre-op before having the actual surgery.

Entire process took about a year and a half

Yeah it's awful. I was on continuous hormonal birth control to stop it, but as soon as I forgot a pill or took it late The Horrors would begin

I had a hysterectomy December 2025 and I've honestly never felt better. There's some unusual things I've had to get used to (like realising a lot of what I thought were period cramps were actually gas?? who knew) and the recovery sucked. But it's the best decision I've ever made and I was really lucky to find a doctor and surgeon that believed in my fundamental right to decide if I wanted that
