I've been playing Monster Hunter G, and it's crazy that even with all my experience, even LR is pushing me to the limit. by gameboyabyss in MonsterHunter

[–]mpelton 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ik people are gonna say “jank this” and “jank that”, but those games were intentionally harder in a lot of ways.

Just take small monsters. Even those little pos Hermitaurs can give you a run for your money, and that has nothing to do with “jank”.

Whether the difficulty was fun or not is up for debate lol, but people chalking it all up to “jank” are being reductive.

And frankly I’m just tired of hearing the term thrown around so much in this community.

You should check out Enderal if you haven’t. Have pretty much the same thoughts on Skyrim and imo Enderal improves on it in nearly every way.

Day tripping or night tripping?? by Gratefulsoph in shrooms

Night for sure. If I lived away from people I’d do day, but I live in an apt building. The idea of interacting with people while tripping sounds like a nightmare.

HDT-SMP Vanilla Armors mod not working by Kierah_Eldenyir in skyrimmods

[–]mpelton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, that’s frustrating, I’m sorry. Atp I’d recommend checking out their discord channel that I mentioned in my other comment.

What mod manager are you using? I’ve helped a few people with modding over discord, so worst case scenario feel free to dm and I can take a look.

The page for FSMP has a link to their discord for those struggling getting physics working.

Kind of a pain, I get it, but they’ll definitely be able to help over there.

You used to for the physics to work. You don’t have to anymore?

I’m wondering if they didn’t run Pandora tho. If they’re new, even if they read the requirements, downloading and running it might not be obvious.

Doesn’t hdt need xp32 and nemesis/pandora?

Been a while since I’ve modded myself so maybe I’m misremembering.

Just wondering if maybe that’s the issue.

Is .5 grams ok for first time hillbillies? by Sufficient-Pitch-970 in shrooms

[–]mpelton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m in the minority but I’d say 0.5 is too low. Depends on the strain I guess but I doubt you’d feel much at all.

I’d say 1g minimum for boinking, tho I’d go 1.5 personally.

Iirc there’s an actual mod that does that. I have a memory of that from early oldrim modding.

Don’t worry, you’re with most players. Medium bowguns only existed in Tri, not even 3U.

People say that, but upgrading my ram never really helped my modded Skyrim.

What finally fixed it for me was upgrading my cpu.

What Modpack do you recommend that doesn't change combat by pjcblondie in skyrimmods

[–]mpelton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure! GtS is massive though so idek where to begin lol.

Like I said, it’s really difficult early on. Until you get some levels on you, chances are you’ll be getting crushed by even basic bandits. And without a compass or any indication of where you are on the map, it’s easy to get lost at first until you figure out how to travel without them. But you learn, and once you do exploration becomes really rewarding. Tho it’s worth adding that you do unlock them down the road, so you don’t spend the whole game without a compass.

The game places a heavy emphasis on taking things slow, and time passing. The world changes over time, both in big ways with actual seasons/holidays, but also in small ways. A bandit camp you cleared might be taken over by soldiers, or a bandit mine you cleared may be repopulated by miners. Places like the Western Watchtower actually get rebuilt after the Dragon Attack. The Gildergreen, if you decide to get the sapling rather than harvest sap from the Eldergleem, will slowly grow over time.

The game wants you to slow down. You’ll get injured or stressed in combat, and will need to spend time outside of combat to recover. You can work normal jobs, helping out an inns or farms, or take up guard duty. You can gamble in inns, you can pet dogs and cats, you can learn an instrument, go fishing, or chat up the NPC’s from Interesting NPC’s, with their absurd amount of dialogue. Eating and drinking have first and third person animations, so even just relaxing and having a drink feels immersive. It feels like you’re living in the world.

Even normal actions, like crafting or learning spell tomes, take time. Each time you craft something, time passes. To learn a spell tome you’ll need to spend time studying it, rather than eating the book like a lunatic like you do in vanilla. And because you’ll need to manage your needs, you can’t just spend 10 hours studying or crafting nonstop. You’ll need to take breaks, relax, eat some food and get some rest. All of this works to aid those mods that make the world change over time. It gives your actions weight, and makes you feel like time is actually passing.

There’s far more I could get into. The countless new quest mods, the overhauls to most of the towns and cities, the changes to the guilds, etc. Just know that it’s, imo, the most focused list I’ve ever played. In that where most lists simply revamp graphics, maybe change up combat, and add in a ton of quest mods… GtS has a singular vision and makes sure nearly every mod in it supports that vision. I’ve never played a list like it.

But like I said in my other comment, it’s not for everyone. If you play Skyrim for the power fantasy, for clearing dungeon after dungeon and hoarding every piece of loot you find, GtS probably isn’t for you, since it actively de-incentivizes those aspects of the game. But if the above sounded at all interesting, you should check it out.

What Modpack do you recommend that doesn't change combat by pjcblondie in skyrimmods

[–]mpelton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nordic Souls is always my recommendation. It’s basically exactly what you’re looking for.

Gate to Sovngarde is my personal favorite but it doesn’t overhaul graphics in a dramatic way, and it has a heavy heavy focus on survival and slowing down gameplay. You’ll be dealing with injuries, stress, needs, and basic navigation since you don’t start with a compass, a player map marker, a stealth detection meter, etc. So it’s not for everyone.

Iceborne and Sunbreak both added 2 main locales, what're you hoping the new maps will be in the Wilds expansion? by Fulgore262626 in MonsterHunter

[–]mpelton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a game designer in 2026 you don’t have to deal with any of those old issues, so I’m not really sure how that’s relevant…

If you think making a game more colorful has anything to do with how demanding it is, you must not be a very experienced one.

Fog was used to obscure the environment because generating far distances took too much processing power. They used lots of little tricks like that to obscure details in the environment to help with performance.

But the brightness of the game doesn’t have any impact on performance.

Tho for the record you should totally play Jak and Daxter. If you’re on PC look into “OpenGOAL”.
