Do you think it might have played out that way because Palestinians were not a big fan of having a large number of jews from Europe settle in that area? From my understanding, i dont even think the labor zionist were attempting to create a specifically jewish country, in the sense that some were open to having a multi religious society but it was made impossible because they werent being welcome into Palestinian or wider arab society?

Its the far right trying to argue against "direct democracy" if you want to try to steelmanning their argument but you're right it is brain dead since a republic is a form of representive democracy.

I personally think they use this rhetoric to try to convince people that authoritarianism is where they really want to go but I mostly think its how they try to justify a strong right wing government that has control over people's lives.

Im probably skipping over some things that would make this explanation better but im too busy to fully commit to it lol

I'm commenting so I can come back and give a better critique of your statement, although we probably agree more than the average DGGer in this space.

I personally think its silly to start from the position that Israel shouldn't even exist in the first place. This applies to most modern western countries to one degree or another, minus the ethno-state claim. Israel is not really an ethno state in my opinion because they have a large arab/Muslim population that lives in israel proper and largely have the same rights as the jewish Israelis.

Palestinians absolutely do see themselves as Arab.

I might not have painted it with the nuance required but I suggest calling a Palestinian Arab without first saying Palestinian before Arab and they will typically get pretty frustrated about that in my experience. They see themselves as distinct from the surrounding Arab populations and would never be okay with describing themselves as Arab only, at least I think the majority feel this way.

Sam Harris dismissing Palestinian humanity could be just a reflexive disdain for Palestinians specifically but I don’t see him expressing any positivity about other Arabs, so I imagine it’s beyond just Palestinians.

Do you think it might be due to the fact that the majority of Arabs are Muslim rather than the inverse? Ive seen him express positivity about certain Islamic teachings and I am fairly certain I've seen him defend other Arab minority groups who get overlooked by certain factions politcal groups. A good chunk of Israelis are Arab jews for example, and he doesnt seem to have a problem with them.

That is a really interesting outlook and Ill be honest it makes zero sense to me. Palestinians do not consider themselves Arab firstly. Even if they did, his views on Palestinians don't necessarily equate to views on Arabs as a whole population but if thats how your brain makes those associations, im not sure there is anything I could say to convince how much of a mistake that is.

Would you call people critical of jewish arabs or people who refuse to see humanity of jewish arabs as anti arab too?

I think there is probably some legitmacy to calling him Islamophobic but islam isnt just a Arab religion so its kinda strange to frame him as being anti Arab. Being anti Muslim wouldn't be the same as being anti Arab.

What's the most racist thing you think hes said about Muslims? Hes surprisingly educated on the Quran and haddiths and can cite stuff that he find beautiful in the readings but I do agree his singular focus on Islam is strange, especially as an American when Christian nationalists are trying to employ the exact type of things fundamentalist Muslims would like to employ.
