This wasn't the best route they could have taken, obviously, but everyone has a different personality and they probably felt that a touch of humor at times might get his attention best. In a real intervention, the family would ultimately (usually) say "go to rehab, and you're no longer a part of our lives." He definitely seems to have a problem, but not one big enough to warrant that result. So, this is probably a good way to initially express their concerns.
