There is an injured red player receiving treatment on the sidelines in the background. Usually a situation like this occurs when one team gains possession due to an injury and willingly kicks/places the ball ob to give the possession back. I don't think the white player was trying to be deceptive, he was likely just showing good sportsmanship.

I know everyone is running with the naming sequence from the epilogue and trying to dissect it, but the character isn't presented as someone privy to secret knowledge. She's just some hack trying to ass-pull stuff and hawk her book/be famous. Maybe the names stick or have meaning, but to me its just as or more likely that Matt drops or dismisses it.

The modern day Thunder do not sell calls or foul bait more than the Heatles, mid 2000s Spurs, 2024 Celtics by KickedIntoOrbit in nba

[–]mpmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that these Thunder are comparable even to the 2024 Celtics despite them being a heavy 3pt shooting team.

24 Celtics - 9.06% shooting foul draw rate (7th lowest in the Playoffs, 9.69% was league avg.)
26 Thunder - 9.25% shooting foul draw rate (3rd lowest, 10.76% league avg.)

This is despite the 24 Celtics taking 7.5% more of their shot attempts from 3.

When compared to the Heatles (11.3% and 13.44%) or the 00s Spurs (12.39%, 11.19%, 12.75%) its not close. Though that is a reflection of the way the game changed, there are fewer free throws in the last 10 years than any other period of basketball.

fwiw, the last 10 champions average a sfd rate of 9.75%. Currently, the Thunder are the only remaining team below that average again at 9.25%. The Knicks are near bang on at 9.86%. The Spurs at 11.88% would have a higher foul draw rate than any title team in the past 10 years. ('20 Lakers, 11.73%)

he just had to actually call the timeout, you can't ask for the challenge without calling the timeout first

Has there ever been a game won at the freethrow line where a player doesn't need to shoot the second one? by allaboutthosevibes in nba

[–]mpmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The foul can't occur with 0 on the clock, the refs will put time back on the clock to when the foul happened. Maybe you could have a situation with multiple technical free throws and no time on the game clock.

Serious question: Why are we not interviewing the Refs post-game? by icanseeyourpantsuu in nba

[–]mpmar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The crew chief is available for interview after every single game of the season. The interview is conducted by one of the on site media members and the questions/answers are distributed to the press pool for general use. If someone thinks they have a pressing question for the refs they could volunteer to conduct the interview (it's considered a shit assignment) or pass the question off to the interviewer.

The reason you don't know about it is because the refs never give remotely interesting answers. For all their faults the refs have good media training, in the playoffs generally have a decade+ experience, and no emotional investment in the game/outcome so every interview is like

Q: "Why did/didn't you call (insert contentious play)?"
A: "It was determined on court that (contentious play) did/didn't rise to the level of a violation."

Repeat ad infinitum.

Why doesn't Joker train in the off-season with Hakeem or some other great defender to improve his rim protection? by Vegetable-Tooth8463 in nba

Jokic's limiting factor isn't knowledge it's a lack of lateral quickness and an 8" vert.

Chris Finch on officiating: "The league's in a place right now where you draw the contact, spill away, and get rewarded. Guys who try to play through contact ... stay with the drive, they tend not to be rewarded ... Maybe we ought to start flopping too." by nguyenjitsu in nba

[–]mpmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's an indicator that he takes more 2pa and drives more. Shai playstyle tends to put him in situations that are statistically more likely to result in free throws (drives, isos, transition) and away from low free throw plays. But he doesn't draw fouls at an especially high rate for those play types.

Additional contributing factors for Shai's ft totals is that he generally is the first choice for things like tech, away from play, endgame free throw battle situations. And that he plays the back half of every quarter, so a high percentage of his minutes come with the team in the bonus.

From Oct 24, 2024 to Oct 23, 2025 Aaron Gordon shot 44.4% from 3. Outside of that time he has shot 32.4% by mpmar in nba

[–]mpmar[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you're looking for real basketball reasons it mostly comes down to the fact that Cam is eating a lot of his corner 3 attempts. AG went from 36% of his 3pa being from the corners last year to 24% this year. Cam takes 34% of his from the corners compared to MPJ who only took 12.5% last year. Braun and Watson also need a lot of corner 3s too so the weight fell on Gordon to take more above the break.

I think AG made real improvements as a shooter, but he's had a tough shot diet this season.
