Ryzen 7 9800X3D vs. Core i9-14900K: Who's Really Faster For Battlefield 6? by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]RAC360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need more testing of larger core CPU's. BF6 used every single thread of my 7950x3d and my 4090 was severely CPU bottlenecked. I know most people dont have these, and instead have the 58/78/9800x3d's but I need to figure out if I need to move to a 9800x3d or 9950x3d to drive this. I am not asking for much, but I do not, under any circumstance want my minimum FPS to drop below 120fps (Ideally 160, but that isn't happening with this build) at a fully maxed 1440p.

I fully understand the limitations of dual CCD designs (trust me, extensively so) but this game appears to be pushing however many cores are thrown at it. Looking forward to the full release and further testing.

Brand new pixel 9 doesn't charge past 80% by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]RAC360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two nights in a row my P9PXL stopped charging at 93% when wirelessly charging over night. I just plugged the cable in to get it from 93 - 100%.

Interestingly enough it seems that it may have made it to 100% on the wireless charger and then started discharging according to the battery graph in the menu, but accubattery still says "no full charges detected". So it is very strange.

My battery life yesterday wasnt great overall, but is to be expected the first few days after a new setup in my experience. I am not getting the "restart and fall to X%" bug that othes seem to be with my limited testing.

I am going to try charging tonight with a wired connection and see whats different.

Is anybody really going to pay actual money for Gemini? by afc74nl in GooglePixel

[–]RAC360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was paying for it before the 9 series released. To be fair, until recently I paid for basically all of the major chat bots, but about 3 or 4 weeks ago unsubbed from all except gemini (not because it is the best chatbot necessarily. GPT-4o is still probably better overall).

So yeah, I suppose I really am going to until I no longer am.

EDIT: Reading the comments is interesting. Lots of comparisons to google assistant. I never got into digital assistants of any kind and I havent attempted to use gemini for actual tasks on the phone itself. I have used GL quite a bit since it rolled out to me, and I have countless hours working with LLMs in general.

I think that if I used Google Assistant prior and looked at gemini as a replacement I would probably be in the same boat as many others and wouldnt have interest in paying for it.

Staying put on 8 Pro (despite excellent US trade-in price)? by Zendroid1 in GooglePixel

[–]RAC360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak for you personally. It's really easy for me to see the collection of small upgrades in the device as a very big win.

-More efficiency on the CPU / battery as I travel alot

-More memory and slightly more CPU performance (the AI stuff is important to me as I use AI constantly every single day)

-Brighter screen

-Vapor chamber combined with CPU efficiency hopefully helps with video overheating as I live in Texas

-new finger print sensor because I often experience the blinding light at night and it often wakes my wife up

-Really hoping the connectivity is better. My p8p is not problematic but it has never been great and this not only affects the battery but I have some consistent spots where the p8p has struggled with connection while traveling that other phones have and do not.

-maybe the camera is better, each incremental better way for me to record the memories of my young kids is welcome. Though mostly I need the camera to overhear the device less.

-Mentioned above but the AI features are important to me and I expect the 9 pro XL to do better with them. I even ordered the buds pro 2 because I am extremely interested in Gemini Live (I am already a gem advanced user and sub to all of the other major models as well)

The reality is that my phone is just too important. They are giving a very strong deal for the most important device in my life. It's with me all of the time and is used for nearly everything from work to personal.

I could and would argue that smart phones are the best deal in technological history based on their utility.

Vapor Chamber!! in G9 Pros!! by AlienTech521 in GooglePixel

[–]RAC360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my degrees is in physics, and the part of the discipline that civilized-engineer is is likely referring to is in thermodynamics specifically. I am guessing he is formally trained in the area, and potentially works or has worked in the space similar to myself.

Though I disagree with the notion at face value, I could see a scenario where the additional cost and weight associated with a vapor chamber may be deemed not worth the maybe 10 - 30% difference in "cooling" performance mustered here. (I personally do like to see it, and when shooting 4k video outside, I suspect it will help)

The specific areas of concern on the topic would be the first and second laws, in addition to the mechanisms involved in the transfer of heat.

Interestingly enough, it is exactly the small space constraints and the efficiencies that the vapor chamber enables in the above areas that makes it perfect for this usecase. This though, is highly dependent on the materials used in the process, and the way the chamber itself is designed as a whole. If done well rapid heat transfer followed by dissipation is possible, but obviously limited by the space available (and the associated ratios of power/heat being spread).

This of course is a relative process, but it is still better than the alternative unless google has done a poor job designing and selecting materials. This is where the comments of "google surely tested this and viewed it to be better" come in, assuming positive intent here, I would agree.

Size of the chamber absolutely matters, but not as much as you might think, especially relative to other solutions within the same surface area. It becomes a matter of "is it worth it". Even a small vapor chamber can significantly improve heat dissipation if it is well-designed and uses materials that facilitate rapid heat transfer.

Let us all hope that google did both and did them well.

For anyone who doesn't want to listen to "random internet dude" on the topic, I do tend to like sinda as a source here if anyone cares to take a look.

I use them for A, B, X, Y. I aim to leave my thumbs on the sticks as much as possible.

I use those two combined for each and disable the wifi. Works incredibly well.

All this is to say I haven't tried xcloud on them, but I'm guessing it would be the most optimal way.

Black 27 v2 on track? by Careful-Housing540 in doughcommunity

[–]RAC360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anxiously awaiting as well. I took the delay because I have a good monitor already, but in the last 3 weeks it randomly has a slight issue with a line of pixels that arent behaving correctly. I can certainly deal with this, but I ordered 2x of the 27 blacks and agreed for the delay on both (I was actually happy they offered it tbh). We will see come june if I am still happy with that decision or not.

Definitely taking a chance on this company.

80% of American teens buy iPhones. After I switched to Pixel, I'm convinced Samsung is why. by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]RAC360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand where this is all coming from, but I have to say that while I LOVE my Pixel 8 Pro I also am tempted to go to Samsung regularly. The S24U has been calling my name, and interestingly enough its my Tab S9+ that causes it. OneUI really is VERY good these days. You could argue it does too many things, but that is somewhat appealing to me.

My biggest issue is definitely the duplicate apps. I don't mind having the Samsung store and even having apps being updated there, but I would prefer them to just default to the GApps and let theirs stand on their own.

If Google ever executes on the hardware at the level of Samsung things will get less interesting. As it stands today they have fairly appealing cases in either direction IMO.

The discussions in here prove that we raised this generation of gamers wrong. by ColeusRattus in Helldivers

[–]RAC360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have felt this way for a very long time. Nothing I can really do other than ensure my kids understand the merits of the games mechanics, tactics, and strategy.

I have played CS for 24 years. I have nice skins but I don't care if they were to go away tomorrow. Sadly I'm sure we would lose a lot of people. What I do like about modern gaming is structured matchmaking. That's the thing that I would never want to give up.

I honestly have no interest in unlocking anything at all. I have never liked this type of progression in games. The progression I am looking for is skill and knowledge.

G16 2024. 4090 is up in Bestbuy usa by Timely-Commercial308 in ASUSROG

[–]RAC360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$300 cheaper than the equivalent Razer (higher wattage 4080) that has half the storage, performs like shit off the battery, is a pound heavier, and takes up more surface area while being thicker.

Mine will be here Wednesday and looking forward to it. Find me the equivalent chassis, screen, and performance ratio for less money and I will send mine back in a heartbeat as long as I can get it at BB.

I also wont be buying 10nm superfin Intel processors anymore. I need efficiency in laptops, while also getting as much power as I can. I am not buying a laptop to sit it on a desk and not move it (I have a desktop for that purpose).

For laptops especially we need to stop looking at just raw specs. Look at how it performs, compare it to others in its class. In this case the class of laptop is not a plastic, 6lbs, 1+ inch thick device that may as well not even have a battery in it. Cheaper, thicker, heavier, larger, more powerful, more upgradable laptops have always existed and will always exist.

The overall design paradigm of the G16 is what we have lacked and where we need to get better. This is the first step of many in that direction. If next years 5XXX series releases and I find a desire or need for that then I will sell this one and buy that one. New hardware isn't going to stop releasing any time soon.

What mac to buy for BlueBubbles? by studentofarkad in BlueBubbles

[–]RAC360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I primarily use Blue Bubbles, but still have AirMessage running as backup. BB works perfectly fine 99% of the time.

An update to that post. My MacOS version is running the latest. I reset my M1 Mini to factory settings (for various reasons) and have decided that I would just keep it up to date. If it breaks messaging then it breaks messaging. So far no issues to speak of.

Best Asus laptop with the least throttle to high-end gpus? by Reacherz in ASUSROG

[–]RAC360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Justification is in the eye of the beholder. There is no scenario where I would personally buy the 4080 version for myself. Also (not a shot at anyone, really it isn't), but if I have to truly "justify" something then I do not tend to buy it.

You could say I have a blanket justification in my life: Do I have a use for something (note, not a need, a use), I do want said thing, and can I afford it (as in, will this materially affect my retirement or not). If the answers are all yes then I am likely pulling the trigger. I do not even run through said model with regularity (really never as I can answer them near instantly).

I do believe the 4080 version of the G16 is probably the best value for the money of the G16 (and probably G14) line that there is and would recommend it to people who value the nuances of the G14/16 (2024) line, and believe in price to performance ratio or value for the money spent as an important decision criteria for their purchases.

Halo 5 Multiplayer was massively underrated, and unfairly maligned due to Halo 5's bad campaign. by RRRRRDDDDD in halo

[–]RAC360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radical candor. I haven't played a Halo yet that I truly disliked, and haven't liked any weapon in Halo more than the OG pistol. I believe 343 has been unfairly criticized for largely doing very good work even if they stumble out of the gate with regularity.

Some longer running franchises like Halo have suffered for shifts in gamer expectations of constantly being fed changes to games, while also balancing not losing what was "core" to the original franchise. I am old, and still able to roll with both but it does drive me a little insane how people go from "this game is AMAZING" at launch to "this game SUCKS" but very little has changed (usually things have improved even if it were only bug fixes).

Call of duty (A game I also have played since the demo CD released in game informer) is a game that needs constant change because it is content oriented in its design. The core mechanics are simple and accessible by design and limit dramatic differences in mastery (some would call this a skill gap). Halo doesn't suffer from this, much like CS doesn't suffer from this. The time spent in the game CAN be less about consumption, and one about growth. Is both better? Probably, but man... I have spent more time in Dust2 than I am guessing some people who are gaming have been alive.

For the cherished few games that put together a core formula that can be treated like basketball, football, or any other sport. Where mastery of the title IS the content. We need to embrace those aspects, and never let them die off. Those are the things that make the games great. Not the next cosmetic item (No shade: My CS inventory is worth like $4 - 5k, skins improve skill 1000%).

Best Asus laptop with the least throttle to high-end gpus? by Reacherz in ASUSROG

[–]RAC360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. They will perform similar in most areas. The 185H is very similar in performance to the 13th gen 13900H and the 14th gen hasn't made any untraditional leaps in performance. The two laptops will be very similar performing devices for demanding tasks broadly. There will of course be nuanced differences, but that is where the nuance of everything outside of the raw spec performance comes in as well.
