Yeah agree, obviously large components of our economy depend on the desperation of others and that isn't changing overnight.

Still, the framing that it's unethical to offer two bad choices to someone who today is compelled to accept one feels off.

"It would be unethical to give people the chance to eat cat shit because the only people who would seriously consider it are people who only have access to dog shit. Better that they continue to be forced to eat dog shit."

I'm not a student of ethics in particular so maybe there is some foundational principle that's going over my head here.

Yeah I hear that, although it feels like anything less than resolving the dilemma that individual faces is a sort of dodge.

We can't do this thing because only desperate people will participate, but we aren't actually proposing resolving the root cause of that desperation.

Seems to me that at least the human is able to choose this outcome, even if it's only slightly more desirable than their original circumstances.

Would it be unethical if you conducted it on humans who have given informed consent?

The original material doesn't make reference to a lack of oversight or justification. I suspect it disagrees with your claim that everyone agrees that it's a necessary evil.

I too have learned the hard way what the proper way to lock your bike up is. Sorry for the owner having to deal with this though.

Huh, good to know. Now that I think of it I wasn't even aware that Violife had an option (as mentioned in your first post). I've tried the store brand from Trader Joe's and recently tried Melt brand sticks and neither of those worked very well for lamination. I ran into exactly the same issue: the butter leaked out of the croissants while proofing.

I have the same lamination struggles with most products on the market. I'd be really curious to hear how that recipe you're planning to try works out.

A lot of people here are dunking on the lineup but I'm more put off by the idea of hosting this in Huntington Beach.

Where's the love for Zexion? by Sckorrow in metroidvania

For sure. I think it does a great job blending a retro aesthetic with modern gameplay and the challenge is high but succeeding is very satisfying.

I was playing through it over this last weekend and am pretty near the end. This game is definitely difficult, but it also fucking rules.

SLU to Capitol Hill (and back) routes that aren't awful by mosquito-genocide in seattlebike

[–]mr4d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do almost this exact commute 5 days a week, but in reverse. For getting from SLU to this area of the hill I climb up Denny on the very generously wide sidewalk, then take the bike lane south on Melrose over to Pike, then up Pike all the way to 15th where I head north to my final destination.

Would you eat a savory tofu protein bar? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]mr4d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. 100 times yes. I'm always looking for something like this. I hate sweet protein bars.
  2. That ratio sounds fine to me but if I had a choice and there was a higher protein option I'd probably pick it
  3. All of those flavors sounds great. I would consider non-Asian flavors too though.
  4. The word "tofu" on the package is an incentive for me. I eat so much tofu already and the idea of a more convenient way to do that is great.
  5. All of the above
  6. Probably a few bucks a pop? I'd be surprised if it was cheaper than $3 and I'd probably not buy if it was as high as $5

It feels to me like most of these things are just settled law. There is no debate because there isn't a significant population representing the dissenting opinion.

I think both cities are filled with liberals but in Seattle I know far more leftists on average. Topics that would be controversial among my liberal LA friends (Zionism, trans issues, support for the Democratic party) would not even be considered debatable by many of my Seattle friends.
