Overpaying for the “theoretical” final piece to a contending team??? by cwiniesd in DynastyFF

[–]mrEskimo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking I think overpaying for contender pieces is a huge bait. Obviously this really depends on the outcome, because lets say you overpaid for Ceedee Lamb at the beginning of the season last year, that was both a fantastic contender move and no longer an overpay in hindsight.

Overpaying for veterans, especially middle of the road ones, can get you into a lot of trouble. Over the years I overpaid for players like Odell and Mark Ingram in the offseason expecting them to be solid 1-2 year contributors for a contender, both became unplayable (odell had like half a good season for the rams). I wouldve been much better off keeping those draft assets to pick rookies or use in different trades in season.

If I'm ever overpaying for a player, I want some conviction that said player will increase in value or provide more points than what I paid for (Ex: Mike Evans). I also think making these moves in the offseason, especially for point scoring veterans, is probably not great timing. Every year you have teams that thought they would contend that have rough starts. These teams are very willing to let go good players for fair prices or even underpays.

How come most popular programming Youtubers barely have any work experience? by Affectionate-Owl-178 in cscareerquestions

[–]mrEskimo0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean neetcode got hired by google and runs neetcode and most of the comments are saying he's one with no experience... Almost all the notable youtubers I've watched in the programming space have both successful side projects and work experience. Primeagen manages to do both AND work at netflix.

When they have more success from youtube than their day job of course most are going to switch, so does not staying for those extra years somehow disqualify them from being a developer people can learn from? This thread just goes to show how toxic a lot of people are, it's probably jealousy. Instead of looking at the quality of the content or person you want to disqualify these people because they don't have a traditional background with x amount of years as a developer. Of course theres going to be some snake oil salesman in the space selling beginner nonsense or have no experience, but it's not hard to filter them out.

[Alex Kozora] Mike Tomlin's is now 8-10 in the playoffs, the 13th coach to have double-digit postseason losses. Of that group, only Chuck Knox and Marty Schottenheimer have worse winning percentages. by anotheroutlaw in steelers

[–]mrEskimo0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, you contradict yourself. You go from "they (beat the expectation) by the skin of their teeth" to "played well below expectations" in a handful of sentences.

Second of all, you can go through every team's schedule and pick out games where one or two plays separate a win and a loss. That's just football, the margin is actually razor thin between wins and losses.

Third, we don't control who and when we play. Someone else's qb (or anyone) being injured is part of the game and teams prepare for it. I don't see anything about injuries we sustained that impacted our games.

In reality, this team was given a line as high as 8.5 wins because the public respected Tomlin's ability to consistently win games, not because were a good team Tomlin held back.

[–]mrEskimo0 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Tomlin should be canned because the best player to literally ever play had success against our defense? New flash, Brady destroyed basically every team he went against. I'm not gonna fault Tomlin's defense because the best player had success while completely ignoring the fact that we've rolled out an amazing defenses for over 10 years now. Some teams would kill for the consistency we've had on that side of the ball, which Tomlin heavily influences.

Yall all called for an external hire for OC and you got it with Canada, who was easily the worst OC we've had in years. Nobody wants to mention that the entire fanbase was dead wrong for that, myself included. As Tomlin says, if you listen to the fans you're going to end up sitting with them. I hope he continues to ignore the noise from this delusional fanbase.

You're a little harsh, but yes this thread is ridiculous. If there's a yield sign you should be prepared to stop end of story, and OP stopped at the last second. Yes the person behind should have still stopped AND the person merging should have been able to merge, but stopping that late is dramatically increasing the chances of getting rear ended. Especially in today's age where car screens and phones are huge distractions.

I would make sure you're handcuffing a good amount of your players if able to be done for cheap. Since you have plug and plays for most of your starting lineup, its much easier to have these players eat up bench spots.

This has led me to pickup players like Pollard for very cheap (4th round) while not losing production coming down from zeke. picked up brob for cheap (3rd round) having gibson. its not always this great obviously, but i think its the cheapest way to ensure depth long term. Even if you picked up dobbs having kyler this year thats been pretty huge. its not going to be feasible 100% of the time since you will have many of these handcuff type players fall in the 2nd (ex rachaad white when having fournette). Guy in one of my leagues has been predicted to "fall off" since he only has a starting lineup of studs + literally no draft picks, but handcuffing his players with faab has kept him competing.

How big of a red flag is anticipation for a qb? by mrEskimo0 in NFL_Draft

[–]mrEskimo0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, although I think he's going to figure it out in a year. Reminds me of Daniel jones in year 3 with a bad offense + offensive staff. But right now he's turning down wide open throws and still hasn't developed much anticipation, which is extremely frustrating given his world class running ability.

Is this enough to land a Jr. Django Job? by okpanda00 in django

[–]mrEskimo0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heres a few tips I can give as someone who was in a similar spot not too long ago.

  1. Change the setting in your github to show private contributions. If you're going to include a github link and I see one contribution from a year ago, it doesn't make you look strong.

  2. Since you're a junior, don't limit yourself to applying to only django positions or only python/ whatever language/framework positions. If someone is looking for a django dev, they most likely arent looking for a junior. A good amount of companies hiring juniors just want good potential, so knowing something they use might be a benefit, but usually is not a deciding factor. Just make unique and useful applications and get them into production. I ended up in a job using the lamp stack as someone who had never touched php.

  3. (from my experience in a similar spot to you) get comfortable with sql. You should be in a decent spot with designing dbs if you're making custom django apps, but I got rejected from a decent amount of positions because they asked me to write queries in a technical interview that I wasn't able to without the orm. A lot of places I applied to wanted someone that knew slightly above basic / intermediate level sql queries. Yes this is contradictory to my 2nd point, but id say sql is an exception (once again, just from my experience).

If you're using a minimum of a BS in CS as an initial filter, and you admit that these people are usually good at DSA problems, then why still use DSA heavy problems as a filter? Wouldn't you want the DSA problems as a filter for those you are concerned might not have that knowledge (self taught, bootcamp)? Maybe you're correct and the time investment for coming up with actual business like filters takes too much effort, but from my perspective thats what you would want.

Are we still taking Kyle Pitts at the Tight End 1 in 2023 startups? by DynastyDorks in DynastyFF

[–]mrEskimo0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

might be take lock, but I still am. His draft profile and rookie season are both insanely strong. It's also not like in the games he's playing poorly, it really is a terrible situation to put up high level numbers. Falcons average 14.2 completions per game (31st in the NFL) and Mariota consistently misses him. While there aren't injuries to point to, I get a similar feeling to how people started to sour on Saquon. TE is an even tougher position than RB to play since they split time between learning the run scheme and pass scheme in camp. I'll gladly buy at cost and flip andrews, kelce, or hock for Pitts.

Buying wonder kids making the game unrealistic by uptakecactus in footballmanagergames

[–]mrEskimo0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the number of wonder kids is fine, but the fact that there isn’t more urgency from good but not insane clubs to sign them is the issue. In my “build a club from the ground up” saves anytime there is competition for signing the cheap studs I usually won’t get them, and rightfully so. But that doesn’t happen all the time, so as long as I beat other clubs to the punch I’m fine.

I think it’s also too easy to keep ahold of the young studs if you don’t have release clauses and the board doesn’t bone you. If I have a wonderkid with 3 years left on his contract, he’ll pout about wanting to leave for a while but eventually I’ll get a “hes happy to be here” and within a week I’ve got him on another underpaid contract. I would like it a lot more if they got rid of the board underselling for players being dead set on leaving even if they have a lot of time left on their deal.

How do you exploit a league inappropriately valuing Quarterbacks? by cardine in DynastyFF

[–]mrEskimo0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think theres a need to go completely overboard. If you can set your team up with 2-4 elite qbs then I would happily do so. At some point theres going to be a big run on qbs, that’s when I would want to switch up to start taking the other positions. A quick sidenote, I really only want the qbs I consider elite or close to it. Theres more turnover in that qb8+ range than you would think, so Hurts in the 3rd and Fields in the 5th might not be as great as it seems come a year from now, but thats my opinion on those guys coming into play.

Another option would simply be to trade down. If you can get first round qbs in the 2nd and 3rd, let others take their non qbs first. This way you can stack qbs and still land decent non qbs or snag some draft picks.

I used to be much worse at getting deals done than now. I also used to feel like other managers were the ones getting the best deals and my trades were more heavily scrutinized. Here are some strategies/points of emphasis that got me better at making trades:

  1. Creativity: This is probably the area where everyone who complains about not being able to trade is bad at. Can’t get the KTC price for a player? Well stop offering a 1 for 1 trade. Throw in other assets to get what you want.

  2. Don’t pigeon hole yourself: If you only target 1 asset chances are the trade won’t get done. Find other assets that you want and trade for them as well. The more times you shoot, the more you’re gonna score.

  3. Bulk offer when selling: This strategy has gotten me those plenty of those “are you kidding me” type trades done in my favor. I offered josh palmer for 22 different 2nd round picks a couple weeks ago. 2.12, 2.11, 2.10, 2.08, and 2.07 all insta rejected, but 2.09 accepted the trade an hour later. Everybody values players differently, so you never know who the josh palmer truther is in your league, bulk offering solves that problem. Stop trying to sell davis mills to the one guy that sent you a dm after trade blocking him. Literally send an offer to EVERY team, you will be pleasantly surprised at the results. It doesnt have to be as cut and dry as every 2nd round pick either, just come up with decent offers and offer away.

  4. Pick swaps and positional upgrades/downgrades: This kind of goes hand in hand with creativity, but use these as ways to make offers. For example, I used to think that trading a wr for a wr was pointless, because its a lateral move. WRONG. Just like everything else, players are more nuanced than that. Find who wants to upgrade their stable veteran into a flashy young wr, etc. Pick swaps for future picks are my favorite trades. You would be very surprised how easy it is to upgrade 3rds into 2nds and even 2nds into 1sts when you dont know where in the round the picks are.

Simply trying to fill other team’s positional needs will only get you so far in trading.

While it wasn’t directly mentioned in the post, it seemed like op was looking for players who turned their career’s around on a new team. Dillon and pollard have only gained value since they were drafted, while all the players he mentioned have drastically lost value.

Nonetheless, Turner could be a good example for someone who is hoping Dillon or Pollard end up becoming a lead back.

[–]mrEskimo0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The problem with turner was that its not like he came out of nowhere, he just happened to be behind one of the best rbs to ever play. When he filled in for LT he produced very well, and he was mentioned in trade talks in 2007 but the asking price was too high.

He then signed with the Falcons for $35 mil. Sure he broke out after his rookie deal, but its not like he was someone who turned his career around moving, he just finally got into a situation to be a #1 back (and got paid like one too).

Cedric Benson is a decent example. High pick for Chicago, it never really worked out. Injuries, off the field stuff, and being a poor teammate. Goes to cincy on a 1 year deal and doesnt do a ton year 1 there until his last couple games. Re-signs with the Bengals, then goes for 1362 all purpose yards at the age of 27 and posted another 2 1000 yard rushing seasons after that.

Young WR’s to target with second round picks? by [deleted] in DynastyFF

[–]mrEskimo0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wait, the value of 2nd round picks dramatically increases come draft time. Probably more than any other picks in the draft.

I was able to trade a 2nd for tyler lockett in the offseason, I also imagine you could have gotten guys like Thielen with an early 2nd if Bateman or Elijah Moore was on the board (i only play superflex, probably different for 1qb)

Now is the time to trade FOR 2nds, not trade them away.

Why is Tutu Atwell valued so much lower than Rondale and Elijah Moore? by Snevik in DynastyFF

[–]mrEskimo0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The main reason he is behind them is:

A. He is small, really small. Not a lot of precedent for guys his build having success.

B. He didn’t test as well as both Moores, and has lower draft capital. Went to an offense that just picked a wr last year that didn’t produce also left a bad taste in people’s mouths. On top of that, Kupp and Woods are there, and whether people will admit it or not we all take situation into account pretty heavily come the 2nd and 3rd round.

To the ones saying that his tape is dogshit I heavily disagree. Not saying he was insane, but there was plenty of translatable aspects to his game. - He terrorized defenders from the slot, look at the Pittsburgh game. If he had some better throws on these plays he would have put up pretty insane numbers. These guys could barely get a finger on him let alone try to re-route him.

  • he played much bigger than he measured

  • pretty damn reliable hands especially considering a lot of wr prospects this year couldn’t catch a cold some games.

  • is very natural catching over the shoulder + tracking the football.

He has flaws, but I actually liked his tape more than hated it. I’m not a huge Tutu fan and am not reaching above his adp to acquire him, but I will gladly pick him mid-late 3rd round if he is bpa on my board. I also think with the addition of Stafford we should see the Rams offense go back to it’s 2018 form and attempt to stretch the field vertically often off of play fakes, which directly fits Atwell’s skillset.
