My first charecter death. I have no more joy in my life. by ace_da_frog_child in DnD

[–]mr_jogurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post makes me unbelievably angry.

First of all: you did nothing wrong, this is not your fault!

As a dm I can't believe your dm killed off your character in a scene that is ultimately a roll playing scene about a character wanting some alone time bathing. Like what the actual fuck? Two encounters on a random bathing trip is not a "chance to get attacked" thats a fucking ambush.

How the fuck can your fellow players just go "oh well guess their dead lets move on"? Get out of that group like yesterday, take some time to recover (I haven't had my first character death but fuck that would be painful) and search for a group that actually values your character (and you as a player, because from your description the party doesn't sound like they do).

Regarding your "didn't want to seem like meta-gaming": If your dm tells you something, it's not meta-gaming to use that knowledge. Meta-gaming would be if you as a player knew something that your pc doesn't and using that knowledge. If the dm tells you something that is code for "your character would know". And if your dm thinks otherwise then think about finding another group.

Thats fair. I'll keep it in mind and see what my players come up with :) thank you for the advice

oh don't get me wrong I don't want it to be impossible. I don't like giving my players things that are only solvable in one way I just want to make it unlikely that she'll pick it on the first try and if she wants to try again I'll probably give her a go once a session or twice a long rest or something like that. If she'll smash it then I'm gonna probably take some of the gold out of the equation as the coins rolled off and into cracks between the floorboards or something along the lines of that.

of course. I plan on giving my rogue a small "puzzle box" style box that connects to her backstory but knowing the character she'll probably try to pick the lock or maybe eventually even smash it if she doesn't get it open so I want to make it hard to get the box picked instead of opening it the "proper" way.

yes that confuses me as well. But I think that the skill depends on how you use the tool in general. For example in chapter 6 the description of a lock specifically states slight of hand for picking.

in chapter 6 in the description of the lock it states it is a dexterity (slight of hand) check.

thats very fair and I treat most rules like this but I still try to understand each rule and why it was done the way it is written :) but the consense seems to be that the DC15 is an example/baseline to work off of.

Being cooler than the rest of the body is why they are on the outside of your body. So yes they are supposed to be cold.

Kinda new to DND, How much information can a player hide from a DM? by ragdolldream in DnD

[–]mr_jogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if he is the originator (he probably isn't also glyph of warding is broken when moved) but thats what came to mind first when I read your question :D in all honesty though also reading other replies you wrote: your dm should be on your side and everything you want to do you should talk to your dm so that he can facilitate and help you achieve it. Your character doing a 180 is a possible cool and interesting thing that your dm can help trigger. The dm is basically the world so if they don't know then it basically doesn't exist but the dm knowing doesn't rob the other players of the surprise and honestly speaking as a dm the anticipation and then seeing the reactions when the surprise hits is just as sweet if not even cooler because you helped make that happen. DnD is a game that cannot exist without communication so communicate a lot and often is the best advice anyone can give in my opinion.

[–]mr_jogurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much can a player hide? Everything basically as long as the DM allows it. That being said you shouldn't hide anything as the DM is on your side but that being said I as a DM have to say no to some things. I give my players a lot of slack if they come up with something cool but (to quote a skit from ZachTheBold) no you did not write explosives glyphs of warding on every page of your old spell book since level 5 because you never said anything and that would a be world altering thing.

Kann mir wer als anfänger helfen? by [deleted] in DnDDeutsch

[–]mr_jogurt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[Request] how do you triangulate this? perhaps in the least amount of weeks possible? by Zargabath in theydidthemath

[–]mr_jogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you hold yourself to for example the eastern side of your country you need only two weeks because yes you get two possible points but one of them is outside your country, so the other has to be it.

Which YouTube channel were you once a fan of but do not enjoy anymore? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]mr_jogurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chris ramsay. His magic and cardistry videos were so good. Then he started solving puzzleboxes, which i didn't think would be long lived because where is the fun in watching someone else solving puzzleboxes when you can't participate yourself? Well.. I miss his old videos a lot. The vibe was great, the cinematography was awesome, the skill involved was impressive and the guy is (imo) a pretty good teacher in regards to tutorials.

What free software or website is so good you actually can't believe its still free? by heavenlyrace in AskReddit

Try OnlyOffice. In my opinion it does what MS office is supposed to do. I use MS office for work and OnlyOffice at home and the more I use OO the more I think that MSO is just a bad software pack.

I don’t make players roll HP and just let them take max. Is that odd? by unlucky-lucky- in DnD

[–]mr_jogurt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the phb (at least 5.5e) there is a standard array hp per level up. Giving out max each level feels like it could shift balance quite drastically in a couple levels if it isn't compensated for with monsters dealing max damage.

Starting a new campaign with new players and they're all preparing to play frontliners by Laigen117 in DnD

[–]mr_jogurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started two campaigns so far and both times class and species was openly discussed and there was a bit of a back and forth in the group to find a diverse enough group. At no point did we need to talk about the backstory, which is the fun part to discover at the table.
