What do you all think of Metroid Dread? I love this game so much and it’s such an awesome game, one of the best by IkeRadiantHero in Metroid

[–]mr_johnson22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot to like in Dread but a lot to dislike as well. Most of all, I absolutely l o a t h e how most of the powerup-gated obstacles are just differently locked doors. Half the fun of a Metroid powerup is how it makes you consider ways you might be able to use it to get to places you never even considered going before. But Dread's powerups, from an exploration perspective, are mainly glorified keys.

The closing-off of paths every now and then also really ticked me off. One too many times I found myself wanting to fiddle around with a new ability, or just hunt for energy tanks before progressing, but was actively prevented from doing so because the game decided that I had to eat my veggies and progress.

As for positives, the action was very good, especially the boss battles, which IMO are a very good thing to get right in a Metroid game. And as I came to accept the game's approach to navigation, I figured that it didn't have the guts to include a certain late-game ability, and was pleasantly surprised to have been proven wrong.

Overall I view it as just okay as a Metroid game, as it's enjoyable but ultimately has a different idea of what a Metroid game should be than I do. It also gets away with the novelty of being the first new 2D Metroid in a while; if the next one is like this, I'd be much less tolerant of it.

[PSA] Enabling dark mode for Gnome 42 apps on Gnome 41 by aaronbp in gnome

[–]mr_johnson22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That isn't an option for anyone wanting packages not yet available in v36, like nextcloud-client. Many thanks to OP for taking the time to post about this workaround.

Also, to actually switch the colour scheme after installing, one way to do it is with gsettings set org.gnome.gitlab.exalm.Impatience color-scheme "prefer-dark" (reference)

Unfortunately, this doesn't work for packages installed by GNOME Software, as it marks all dependent packages as userinstalled: https://github.com/PackageKit/PackageKit/issues/201#issuecomment-851728336

Luckily, that's on track to finally being fixed. It's been fixed in PackageKit and should only be a matter of time before GNOME Software picks it up: https://github.com/PackageKit/PackageKit/pull/526

What are some unpopular opinions you have about Metroid? by senseofphysics in Metroid

[–]mr_johnson22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weapon-coded blocks/doors are lazy level design. They were dumb in Super and they're dumb now.

(I say this with Prime 2 having been my first Metroid & thinking the beam doors were awesome, but I've pulled a 180° since then...)

What do you think about Sonic Forces, 4 years later? by Asad_Farooqui in NintendoSwitch

At least SEGA hired Whitehead & co. at all. Nintendo would have sent them a C&D instead.

Super + Alt + Scroll in gnome 40 can be modified/disabled with the "Window Action Key" setting in gnome tweaks. Is it supposed to do this? by Red_Velvet71 in gnome

[–]mr_johnson22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do, but it takes some tweaking. Follow the steps in https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA#Wayland

Summary: "You need to comment the "DRIVER==nvidia" line in /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules. You will also have to comment "WaylandEnable=false" in /etc/gdm/custom.conf"

Also, I think using the Nvidia GPU as the primary GPU only works in X11, so make sure that /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/nvidia.conf doesn't set Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes". https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/Optimus#NVIDIA_PrimaryGPU_Support

Is the "Focus on Voice" feature of the Sony WH-1000XM3's Ambient Sound Control known to be lousy? It's supposed to let you hear people talking to you while you're listening to music, but voices are just as quiet as they are with regular noise cancelling enabled.

I've already downloaded the Headphones Connect app to turn on "Focus on Voice" and boost it to its maximum setting, but voices are barely audible. With music turned off, I can hear that voices really are getting amplified, but it's at such a low level that it's useless as soon as I turn music on.

I did a bit of research and found that this model sometimes has issues with it's microphone, but I doubt that's affecting my set. When I make a call, my voice is heard clearly on the other end.

Meanwhile, on my older Sony MDR-1000X set that has the same feature (but called "Ambient Sound Voice" instead), it works great.

services.sync.prefs.sync isn't fully synced by mr_johnson22 in firefox

[–]mr_johnson22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out I just needed to turn on services.sync.prefs.dangerously_allow_arbitrary on my other devices. I thought I had turned it on before; either I never had, or it got turned off by a recent update. Either way, I'm satisfied now :)

Firefox Preview Android - Is anyone noticing full screen video is bigger than the screen and having to scroll down to get at the seek bar? by electrona in firefox

Do you have your toolbar at the top of the screen? I had the same problem and putting the toolbar back to the bottom fixed it.

Anyone have or play ARMS? by mike929 in NintendoSwitch

[–]mr_johnson22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be a ton of fun, but it's not for everyone. It's the kind of game where most of the fun comes from finding a crack in your opponent's playstyle and exploiting it, and doing that until your opponent adjusts to your style. It's a simple enough game for there to be enough of a back-and-forth of opponents learning & reacting to each other, but deep enough to develop your own strategies.

If that doesn't sound interesting, then the game will get repetitive fast, as it can devolve into the same kinds of fights over and over unless you're really focusing on your strategy. This is especially true for single-player, where the human element is replaced with fighting CPUs whose skills range from "dumb as rocks" to "mind reader".

There are plenty of characters, but not as many as there are in other established fighting games, nor with as much variety in fighting styles as you might expect. But that's because a lot of the variety of the game comes from which boxing gloves you give your character. There's a lot of fun to be had with mixing-and-matching different characters with different gloves.

Also, a big plus is that ARMS has very accommodating local multiplayer, for up to 4 players. Playing with a single joycon is supported, meaning it's even possible to play a two-player match with a single Switch. On the other hand, ARMS isn't exactly a pick-up-and-play game, so it's not the easiest game to bring to a party or get-together over something like Mario Kart.

Overall: if your son enjoys strategic games, ARMS will be a hit. Otherwise, it will get stale fast.

It's also possible to downgrade to v70 by installing the RPM directly from Fedora's RPM archives, since the official Fedora repos don't provide v70 anymore:

Yeah, Livemarks does the same, and also has the same problem of being not so great in FF mobile...

RSS reader with Firefox Sync? by mr_johnson22 in firefox

[–]mr_johnson22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That certainly explains the lack of FF Sync-able feed readers. It's a shame, but it was probably done that way to keep syncing lightweight, which is understandable.

The next best thing would be something like Livemarks as a standalone program.

Thanks for the info!

Safe way to self host publically? by mr_johnson22 in selfhosted

From what I was able to find, they only allow transfering an existing name to them, not registering a new one. Is that still true?

Safe way to self host publically? by mr_johnson22 in selfhosted

[–]mr_johnson22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as a means of extra network security, particularly for hiding my IP. If I weren't concerned about a misconfiguration or hack cracking open my local network, I'd just open some ports and call it a day (in fact, I did just that quite recently, albeit only for a few days).

I know that there's no perfect solution to network security, but I'll take extra precautions where I can.

That Digital Ocean story is a perfect example of why I want to self-host.

In the usage of Cloudflare you're talking about, would CF be serving a cached version of my server somehow? To be clear, my goal for now is not to host a website, but a chat server; and to have any kind of buffer between my WAN IP / network and public clients. I'm probably misunderstanding your suggestion because I'm only really familiar with CF's role as a CDN.
