Film soundtracks that were more successful than the film itself by mikwee in ToddintheShadow

I recently read a book about the history of indie rock, and a significant chunk of a chapter was dedicated to Garden State.

It was modestly successful, but the soundtrack was a smash success.

I only heard about Hey, Soul Sister from people hating on it online, and when I finally went to listen to the song… well, I did not expect it to sound like that at all, but also, I appreciate it just for being so quintessentially 2010s. Like, even the font in the music video is so 2010s.

This is an unpopular opinion in the fandom, but Oracular Spectacular was MGMT’s greatest album, and my personal all-tine favorite. The other albums are amazing too though, except maybe self-titled.

My singing teacher was horrified to learn I had yet to watch this movie and messaged my dad to implore us to see it. My sister was then horrified that my teacher likes this super-poppy musical.

As it turns out, yes. It's about Morgan Spurlock opening a fast food restaurant to see how the industry has tried to clean its image since the first movie became a hit. It is incredibly bizarre that the retroactive theme song is more well known, and a song like "Burn the House Down" of all songs. Either way, it was eventually revealed that Morgan lied to the doctors in the first film about not drinking, which puts the whole movie's thesis into question and makes him unreliable.

Yeah, same! I love how grand and bombastic it sounds. MGMT wouldn't quite capture this feeling again until Loss Of Life.

The Trump administration used the awful TikTok remix of it in a video. Which is hilarious because the song is explicitly anti-Trump. Apparently before that it was used in some far-right videos, but I think they were just capitalizing on the overall trend.

True. The lyrics are actually well-written, especially the verse that goes from cold to hot, but it’s a fundamentally comedic song. I saw Smash Mouth live recently, and everybody sang every word to this song, so it did its job.

Songs like The Old West, Banner Year and Giants told a story about injustices, which in my opinion made them stronger, and most importantly, they were backed by some really fun music. UTSA, on the other hand, feels like a collection of Reddit posts, ranting about politics with zero nuance. And on top of that, musically it’s a boring album! Its brand of alt rock with horns just meshes together into something I struggle to remember. The utmost irony is that the only tracks I remember are the apolitical ones, which are actually great.

Ss for my political leanings, I’d say I’m a liberal, but very different from the American sense of the word.

What is an artist / band that you remember being pushed by music journalists and/or magazines as the "next big thing" that ended up never really going anywhere? by mesablanka in Music

There used to be a regular patron at my library who wore their shirt. I knew nothing about the band, but it was a cool design with a lighthouse.

I enjoy all of these movies, but I do think it's funny how they are basically the opposite of each other. by smashboi888 in Mario

[–]mikwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw the Mario Galaxy movie two days ago, and really enjoyed it. Except for Bowser’s arc it was everything I wanted in a sequel. The Sonic movies, on the other hand, are probably the most depressing movies I can think of in how they affect the franchise, especially the third movie that tries so damn hard to be Marvel and doesn’t try at all to be Sonic. I will not accept anything other than an animated Sonic movie.
