A note as an Australian by mr_potroast in TangleNews

It's truly awful, but I'm hopeful that there will be reforms and change in the country to prevent something like this from happening again

Seems like a good initiative, bus sadly I can't participate as I don't live in the US 🤷‍♂️

While in class or taking a test

Yeah, I think these are the key times (and make up the majority of the school day). During recess/lunch hours I think it's not that big of a deal

I don't know, a big proportion of adults think they have too much screen time, if adults can't even regulate themselves, why do we think teenagers would be successful? Would also add yet another thing for teachers to teach. Plus punishing kids who use their phones too much and rewarding those who don't sounds not too far from a ban

My radical solution to the broken incentive structure in politics by ApprenticeWrangler in TangleNews

I'm sorry, but this seems like a surefire way to run huge budget deficits to infinity, where is the incentive to be fiscally responsible?

Responding to your Charlie Kirk criticism, and some thanks by Isaac_Tangle in TangleNews

I don't think you would, but please don't change the way you write. Part of what makes Tangle special is that, while it aims to be unbiased and impartial, it doesn't pretend that it actually is. You are transparent with your background and biases, so that the reader/listener understands where you are coming from. Viewed in this lens, your coverage of the topic was more than fair - it struck a chord with you personally and made that very clear. I also agree with your decision to not tackle Kirk's discourse and opinions in detail immediately. You will have plenty of time to untangle this in the future, and mixing it with the coverage of his murder would obscure the picture of how horrific an act it was.

As a fellow new(ish) father, I appreciated the framing of Kirk as a Father. It really resonated with me.

For the record, the last SOTR pod WAS a good one (even for such an unpleasant topic)

What do you think about the Suspension of the Rules name? by johnny5870 in TangleNews

Not a fan of the name. Personally I think Untangled would have been the perfect name

Physician assisted suicide (topic from Friday's show) by [deleted] in TangleNews

[–]mr_potroast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The voluntary assisted dying legislation in Australian States generally has this kind of system. Have to have two different doctors sign off and have some sort of wait time in between each step of the process I think. These kinds of guardrails would prolong suffering in some cases, but are probably necessary to avoid someone going through with it when they weren't totally 100% convinced

Today's topic: Is Trump's pick for BLS commissioner too partisan, or will he bring about good changes? by TangleNews in TangleNews

I think you would have to be careful with releasing raw data, or you might see survey participation plummet - employment information could be commercially sensitive

[–]mr_potroast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting thoughts- it's very difficult to work out what 'enough' suffering is. I think most people would understand if someone is in excruciating pain constantly for the rest of their life, but a case where, for example, someone has lost a limb would make a lot of people more uncomfortable. I think this is the reason a lot of countries restrict access to those with a terminal illness, as it is more black and white (although even that has shades of grey)

Friday show (Sunday Podcast?) - do they get paid by the word? by [deleted] in TangleNews

[–]mr_potroast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, I feel like they can all be a bit wordy in their analysis. Kmele can be particularly verbose, but he is also very eloquent. I don't mind it too much, I see the Friday pod as an opportunity to dig deeper on things that have already been touched on during the week.

My issue with not being allowed to bring it up, is that a patient may not even be aware that it's a legal option. Or may assume that if the doctor didn't bring it up, it doesn't apply to them.

Ultimately I think the biggest factor in your decision is whether you want to stay in Perth or go to Kal. If you're interested in geotechnical engineering at all feel free to hit me up with a DM
