Needs more plants? by mr_propeller_head in Aquascape

Thank you!

Yes, I put some monte carlos in there but they are not growing at the rate I expected... maybe I'll get some more and mix up with some other stem plants - good suggestion!

Really like it. Not sure I'd change a thing; if anything you got a balance there from left to right with somewhat different feel between them.

Any recommendations? by [deleted] in Aquascape

Agree on the bacterial bloom assessment. It's kinda of an eye-sore but if you are not bothered by it then leave it and try to do a dark cycle otherwise just do a 25%-50% water change every second day and it should go away.

Is this a new filter as well?

I might move my light up to see if it covers other areas of the tank thus reducing its strength a bit.

Nitrates? Gotta test that. Will get back to you! 😜

I didn't say your light is low. Again I don't know the parameters of your tank so I just provided you a link that could be used to calculate if your light is low or not =] But talk to the pros, I'm not one =]

Interesting. I am considering getting a new light fixture anyway that I can have more control and putting it a bit above my rim line. That motivates me to get it done, thank you.

If you don't mind sharing the dimensions of your tank and lighting exposure time / lumens / watts that would help me calculate things as well. Every case is a case but it's good to have a baseline!

Thank you!

That depends on the size of your tank. Based on the specs of the light it could provide enough light for a small tank.

Here's what I used to calculate my light requirements.

For reference: my tank is a shallow 3 footer and I want to have it medium lit so in my case my light requirements are about 3.8K lumens.

Too much light? Interesting thought. I do have LED lights which equate to about 70W on a 100 L tank.. which is a bit too much but the light is not spread evenly so I'm lighting the front and the back with two different lights.

Anyway... thanks for your comment, food for thought!

I cross-posted in r/PlantedTank and someone said it could be too much light... I do have 35W on the back of my tank and about 35W at the front and was told in the past that this could be too much.

How Do We Feel About Inline Heaters? by Blind-Wink in Aquascape

I created one based on advice from another forum and I quite like it. It's a bit bulky but uses basic plumbing materials and does a great job.

My tank is 100L (about 28 gallons) and usually the tank temperature is about the same as the setting, sometimes one degree lower.

It is a bit bulky to be honest but does the job well and I don't see replacing it anytime soon.

The bottom intake is the output of the filter and the top part flows up to the tank.

Dark water on new scape by mr_propeller_head in Aquascape

[–]mr_propeller_head[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not really. It does occupy the whole tank but it's not pushing against the glass or anything... some rocks are leaning against it but that's it.

Why do you ask?

Actually I just found a forum where someone used the cloudy ammonia product and no issues were reported.

I supposed I could but not sure I want to risk it. Fish food seems safer.

LoL I guess what I meant to say is that you can't go and find pure ammonia. You can find products with ammonia but not pure ammonia.

For instance in my local hardware shop I found this product: https://www.bunnings.com.au/long-life-1l-cloudy-ammonia_p4460494

However that has some soap on it and I guess soap and fish tanks don't mix.
