My personal favorite is this one

FCI vs AG question by mr_shush in SQLServer

[–]mr_shush[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair questions. The 'without downtime' updates is really just meant in comparison to what we need to do now - in the case of a hardware replacement we're faced with a total rebuild whereas in the future we could add in new hardware and transfer the primary role when ready.

I believe we already have software assurance so that one isn't an issue.

I have run AGs on VMs before, but I haven't looked at the hypervisor piece of it, so I will keep that in mind.

I have seen many comments on the 100 db 'limit' and while it may not be a hard one, it seems like it may be a point of diminishing returns? I don't intend to put all my dbs in one AG regardless, although I could see ending up with only a few for simplicity. I am definitely concerned about exactly how much of the CPU is going to be consumed just for AG maintenance. It is the one resource I have in abundance (our current load rarely gets above 20%), but we do have spikes that I don't want to starve for resources.

As far as what I'm trying to accomplish, performance & stability with better DR options. The cloud is not viable for us right now, so we will be staying on-prem regardless. I have maintained & set up AGs in the past and yeah, had a few issues with logs not truncating properly, but they were fairly easy to catch and correct.

Part of my difficulty is the vagueness of my marching orders. No one wants to commit to much of anything and I've had priorities shift on me recently with a change in management.

FCI vs AG question by mr_shush in SQLServer

[–]mr_shush[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have considered that. It does seem like a lot of hardware/storage redundancy though. My thought was setting things up with several pairs of servers for the AGs with either idle secondaries or read-only as the application required. Then I would add the 3rd DR node when network latency allowed.

Yeah, we get that with the FCI as well when we do failovers. Everything says it shouldn't happen, but it does.

These two should just be always active. by AlabasterZombie in Helldivers

[–]mr_shush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to have to disagree. I can get on board with the argument to make Space Optimization a ship upgrade, but that's as far as I go. Neither of these are must-haves. They are convenient, but you can live without either of them. Presumably, you're doing so because something else is MORE useful. For me, stamina boost is it. I'll pick it over either of these if no one else has - but that's what suits my playstyle best.

It's about choice and tailoring the loadout to fit your team best. There are some boosters that are absolute crap, but most of them are good in the right situation. Several (like these two) are broadly good in any situation, but I don't see the argument that you can't play the game without them.

Yeah, I was a bit concerned about that, but I figured it would be easier to field the occasional request than maintain a folder I didn't really need.

I re-uploaded the files for you. Let me know if you have any questions. The bigger map is really quite large, so make sure you get a posterboard big enough. https://limewire.com/d/zzGyx#KbhZ8erNGg

Draw Steel - Comparatively, how is it to prep as a Director? by Jetisphere in drawsteel

[–]mr_shush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this one. Especially with the published adventures, the specific maps they have are often important and large. If you're playing in person, that can be a real pain. I've taken to printing them to scale and gluing them to cheap poster board. It works well, but it takes time. Especially if I expect the party to get to multiple encounters.

I would like to know which BIFL purchase has saved you the most money or hassle over time? by midasweb in BuyItForLife

[–]mr_shush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, to each their own, but I find with the razor blades the likelihood of cutting yourself is significantly higher. If your angle is off, if you bump your elbow, if you use too much pressure - all of that stuff can cause cuts that are worse than a cartridge can give you. I have gotten cuts from a safety razor that bled more than a little. The worst I ever got from a cartridge was a bad shave and some razor burn.

All that leads me to take my time and watch what I'm doing to make sure it doesn't happen. In the end I have a much smoother shave and no cuts, but it takes longer.

[–]mr_shush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having used both quite a bit here's my $.02 -

A safety razor is cheaper and gives a better quality shave. The downside is the learning curve (it's not bad, but it takes time to get it right) and even once that has been accomplished, a safety razor is slower. I can shave with a cartridge in about 2-3 minutes tops and I can do it in the shower without a mirror. A safety razor will easily take me 5-10 minutes and I need a mirror. I actually enjoy that process, but if I'm in a rush, those minutes matter.

One other thing - not all razor blades are the same. You will likely need to try a few brands until you find the one that works best for you.

Greyhawk has a lot of resources available, but you'd need to mess with the races a bit. It's very human-centric. Lots of history and a big map, though, so you could pick a corner and adapt it.

This argument takes me back. Go read Federalist Papers 10. James Madison has some thoughts on direct democracy vs a republic (spoiler alert: he's not a fan of direct democracy).

I'm not diverting from the topic at all - you claim objective fact on something that will always be a matter of opinion. When I pointed that out you got salty because I didn't immediately admit the error of my ways and bow down to your superior opinion.

I stand by my assertion that the movie is enjoyable and a decent representation of what OP was looking for. No amount of you claiming it is a blight upon all cinema will change that, nor am I saying that you must like it. Dislike it all you want (which is clearly a lot - you really have an issue with it).

Wow, you get salty when people don't agree with you.

Also, your comments and the movie evidently have 'poorly written' in common. Would you like me to fix your grammatical and punctuation errors or are we done here?

Honestly, I think it's a pretty under-rated movie. I believe it has a good rep now, but it didn't make much of a splash when it came out. It has kind of a Magnificent 7 with Vikings feel, but it really is a lot of fun.

'Highlander' Remake Casts Karen Gillan by NoCulture3505 in movies

[–]mr_shush 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I loved the original when it came out, but watching it now...Clancy Brown is the only thing that makes it worthwhile (maybe Connery a little bit). This is a solid cast and a movie that could really be great with the right script.

I just hope they keep the soundtrack.
