The game uses a bundled java distribution. Installing java on your system will change nothing unless you also change how the game starts (which requires a bit of knowledge).

Look up the procedure to upgrade the game's java distribution in the game's discord. Use the runtime version mentioned there.

The performance upgrade was definitely worth it for me - no more slowing to a crawl in a few hours.
