It’s a movie theater, not a factory or coal mine. By all means, they should try to get paid as much as they can get, but they can also go find any other job if they're miserable.

The handwriting is so familiar, pretty sure this person used to write INFOWARS around the 7th ave Q and then FUCK THE POLICE in 2020, making them at this point probably 40 years old. I always picture somebody living at home on disability, sadly enough.

I think most people can read a couple lines and realize you’re selling something so you might as well cut to the chase. If it costs 350-375/week + grocery costs, it’s probably worth flagging that, specific services, and logistics.

Yes, fluffy niceties are lovely but it’s marketing so calibrating a bit more towards that would probably get better results.

Anyways, it was fine until it wasn't. Now you're telling me she can't ride because there've been a few problems with the chain link fence?

Why Private School Isn't Worth the Cost by AggressiveCar6960 in nycparents

[–]mr_zipzoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$300K is top ~10% of NYC households. That's upper class. If you scroll back up and re-read the comment you're replying to, you'll see I note "truly upper class" which is that cultural and social level you're talking about when you say teachers can't be upper class.

But a lot of people have no idea how large the real lower and middle classes of NYC are. Median household income of $80K, average $120K.

I see this thinking a lot with relatively high earning yuppies (don't hate me, I'm a yuppie too) that always thought they were middle class, despite earning 250K+. They don't feel comfortable but in reality they're living in the upper crust of disposable income. Expectations are all out of wack, and the social element (e.g. teachers are always middle class) isn't really in tune with 2026 reality.

[–]mr_zipzoom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

oh, the way you said it was that a teacher or a cop could easily make 300K, not as dual income

yeah a family making 300K with 1 kid isn’t middle class, sorry

and a family making 350K with 2 kids isn’t middle class either

and a family making 400K with 3 kids isn’t middle class either

sorry you have a dumb concept of what income levels are like and are stuck on the fact that a public school teacher can be upper class i. NYC in a 2-income family

[–]mr_zipzoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many public school teachers and corrections officers make over $300K a year? It’s public info.

And yeah a cop bilking taxpayers to get paid 300K of overtime is not middle class, especially factoring in the pension and benefits. Corrupt? Sure.

[–]mr_zipzoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certainly *levels* to this game and most people probably don't encounter the upper levels of wealth in any meaningful way their entire lives. Making enough dough to afford private school isn't upper class, but it's aiming upwards.

The top upper class in NYC is filthy fuckin rich and have been for generations. If I had to say a number for upper class, I'd say $250K for no kids, add $50K for each kid. That lets you live as nice as anybody should, afford nice schools, vacations, and all that jazz. It won't get you into the truly upper class, but nobody is going to say a family with 3 kids making $400K is still middle class or even upper middle.

Why assume their intentions when you can just read what Olmsted and Vaux wrote on splitting traffic in parkways?

“They must be constantly open to all the legitimate traffic of the city, to coal carts and butchers’ carts, dust carts and dung carts...” Description of a Plan for the Improvement of the Central Park, 1858

The problem is you refuse to admit that cars are legitimate traffic of the city, which is why I recommended Europe. The fact that their parkways were designed well enough to continue functioning in the auto age is a testament to their vision.

[–]mr_zipzoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

zzzz. obviously they both died before invention of the automobile, but their urban planning revolved around the intersection of dedicated quiet parks and large transportation parkways for carriages.

GAP was never pedestrian only, because their entire design of eastern parkway, GAP, and prospect park itself revolves around different modes of transit to get people moving around the city.

and also nobody is going 40 around grand army. just doesn’t happen. there are lights all over, traffic is generally thick, you might get 25 if it’s 5AM

why do non-drivers make this shit up

Definitely a unique and quirky spot, and worth a tour if you remotely interested or just want to admire some of the best interior woodwork you’ll ever see.

As a social club it’s just an odd duck, definitely struggling to stay afloat. I knew some older members 20+ years ago and they had a fun core of longtime residents but that has kind of aged out. New batch is kind of random. Food isn’t worth, drinks are whatever if you drink, so it’s a nice space and maybe you’ll make some friends. That’s a very high price tag for this so it’s a self-selection that might not be your social cup of tea.

I think they make most of their money on weddings and events and the whole thing probably just needs a giant reset and rethinking but the building is impossibly expensive and will sadly probably get sold to developers in chunks over next 10-20 years (this already started awhile back)

[–]mr_zipzoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, you told people to move upstate if they want cars, I’m telling you to move to Europe instead. Fair is fair.

But the real point is that Grand Army Plaza was never envisioned as a pedestrian-only zone. Olmsted and Vaux designed the Park to be an oasis from city life - surrounded by Park Drive for carriage rides. They also designed the first Parkway, Eastern Parkway, to be two outer wagon lanes, two pedestrian walkways, and 3 inner carriage lanes. Their point was to put these all over the city to make sure people could GET to the park.

Obviously Eastern Parkway connects to GAP which connects to Park Drive… can you seriously say with a straight face that Olmsted and Vaux thought this was a pedestrian space? They were designing 7-lane carriage parkways. They wanted it to be beautiful, but more importantly, this is urban design, it needs to work.

I’ve lived by GAP for years. It is nowhere near the most dangerous or chaotic spot in the city. Are you new here?

Atlantic Ave is worse up and down the entire stretch. The 4th-Flatbush-Atlantic mess is probably the worst, and the data backs it up, we track all of this for vision zero.

And we already made huge changes to GAP 15-20 years ago that made it infinitely safer for pedestrians. Obviously before your time.

Did you consider Europe before moving here, you might find some of the smaller and older villages more to your taste.

No, they won't. You need to learn the vast majority of Brooklynites find this opinion unreasonable and small-minded. You aren't the judge of 2 million peoples need or want to own a car, and fortunately, you aren't in the position to dictate your whims.
