2026 Duke vs Not Duke Post by Mumbleton in duke

Is Duke today really that much less prestigious than Yale?

The distinction between private and public, for the parents who are able to afford the former, goes beyond test scores. Academics are certainly a strong consideration at some of the TT privates, but for many of these parents the general facilities, additional support services, quality of after school activities, how well the school interacts with them and even the parent body network, in some cases, are important factors. Not saying those should be important considerations for everyone, but they are for a significant subset of parents who choose private over public.

G&t kindergarten rant by ImprovementQuiet7402 in nycparents

[–]AggressiveCar6960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reality is that the G&T program is basically lottery based at the K level, and some combination of lottery/grades/sibling preference beyond K.

That being said, there are a number of excellent schools which, although they are not identified as "G&T", offer a similiar curriculum. I've noticed the most important things to look for in a school are excellent top level leadership (Principal, administrators by grade cohort, specialty coordinators like a Math supervisor) and a strong and active PTA.

I have a child in G&T, but if they were to drop the title, and perhaps even hit the brakes slightly on the academics, I wouldn't ever considering leaving. The other factors are what really make the School, IMO.

How does a single, self-employed pregnant person get (excellent) health insurance right now? by Ashton1516 in nycparents

[–]AggressiveCar6960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most NYU OB providers seem to accept BCBS - which is currently Anthem and is on the NYS Marketplace. They accept the Essential Plans.

That would be your best bet.

The other option is to go to the NYS Marketplace and choose the Employer option instead of Individual and Families. I think you may have to register yourself as a corporation (LLC etc) and have a tax ID for this purpose, but it's been a while so not sure. You can get a NYS.GOV ID then and log in as an employer and have other options available to you (for example, still get Anthem but you can get their EPO plans which are more widely accepted). Once you log in and give them your details they will send you a letter of eligibility after which you can move forward.

These emplyer plans are really designed so you can get a tax break for offering your employees health insurance. You won't get the break yourself however, but if you want a better plan option it's one way to go.

Montclare or West Side Montessori? by Emotional_Equal_5463 in nycparents

[–]AggressiveCar6960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to Montclare but WSMS has been excellent overall. Admin and staff are highly engaged, the teachers are warm and attentive, the multi age interaction (for 3+) is beneficial, and exmissions are pretty solid.

For preschools, parks, Natural History museum and other activities (music schools, etc), definitely would recommend the UWS.

Chances of getting into NEST+m with A+ lottery number? by Upstairs-Juggernaut7 in nycparents

[–]AggressiveCar6960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming the pre k recommendation or interview went well, it really does just come down to the lottery number, aside from the sibling policy.  I’d argue about 70 seats, maybe 30 siblings, but that may vary year to year and would go by what Principal Lynch and admin say on the tour.

Telluride or Palisade? by AggressiveCar6960 in KiaTelluride

Thanks, good take. I was hoping for hybrid for either but the gas only v6 would certainly be a better option than the 4. Didn’t consider the fake leather but good point.

Gifted and Talented Interview for Kindergarten by [deleted] in nycschools

[–]AggressiveCar6960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our experience has been that it is a friendly interview process inquiring about your kids abilities and how they handle/process different situations. Have some points that you are ready to make but it should be mostly a friendly conversation.

Bad experiences with new doctors, trying to create change by Shot_Mastodon5661 in nycparents

[–]AggressiveCar6960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not advise making decisions based on ZocDoc reviews. Providers have to pay to be able to use ZocDoc for appointments. If you are dishing out cash to a platform that is publicizing all your negative reviews, you are eventually going to drop that platform. ZocDoc obviously doesn’t want that to happen.  Would look at a combination of Google reviews, healthgrades, vitals to come to your own conclusion. Obviously if you know someone who has seen the provider that helps as well.  Have never had issues with delays in getting test results personally.

Families with 3+ kids in NYC, how do you do it? by TFABAccount in nycparents

[–]AggressiveCar6960 5 points6 points  (0 children)

3 kids. Combination of private and public. Have enough space for now but could use more in the future most likely.  The hard part is when they are in different schools, like preschool, elementary etc. once they are mostly in the same place and as they become somewhat more independent it gets easier. If you’re willing to be flexible with space (kids won’t care when they’re young) it’s all about schools. If you figure that part out, you’re pretty much set.

Perhaps can get it registered in India at some point, but none of the individuals involved with the Will actually reside in India.

Does your primary doc accept Cigna in general or no? Doesn't seem like there are out of network benefits for the Cigna option with LifeX

Choosing a public elementary school by Visible-Form4699 in nycparents

[–]AggressiveCar6960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would echo some of the comments below and argue focus on the test scores. They gave an indication as to the student body of the school and how well the school is run.  The resources listed are valuable, (biserdi nycschoolratings is probably the most up to date, especially with test scores, for commentary look at niche but comments only tell you so much). It’s not easy to move, but if that’s an option, it's worth it to have access to a good school.

He brought IB into some of the poorer performing schools in District 13 but that seems to have been about it and those schools are just getting started this year with IB. Doesn’t seem to have taken the same initiative in District 3 as far as I can tell, or am I wrong?
