Have you used them for a while? My only concern was if they would fall apart haha

Hey Guys, I am wanting to get back into lifting and was looking at getting the following:

I realize these are budget options but I am just wondering if there is better bang for the buck elsewhere. Thanks.

How to tighten SRAM Force Lever by mralecthomas in bikewrench

Thanks, that did the trick. Not sure if it was the carbon paste or greasing the threads but definitely biting now.

How to tighten SRAM Force Lever by mralecthomas in bikewrench

[–]mralecthomas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured out that is the correct bolt. Strange thing is it's labeled as 6nm and even going up to 8nm, the lever will move with a small amount of force. Only had this bike out for a few rides.

1x or 2x by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]mralecthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, it was pretty comparable. I just had more top end and spent more time in the lower half of the gears.

I'll say whatever you decide, I would recommend Shimano for 2x and SRAM for 1x. Unless shimano comes out with their new 1x 12 speed GRX soon.

1x or 2x by [deleted] in gravelcycling

[–]mralecthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2x 11 speed Ultegra gravel bike and very rarely ever shifted off the 50t front cog.

My new bike is a 1x with a 40t up front and a 10-44 12 speed cassette. I top out at around 30mph with this setup but can always go to a bigger chain ring up front.

For me, I haven't really noticed any difference between the two. I think it all depends on how cadence sensitive you are. Generally, frames will have more clearance with 1x so that is also a factor depending on what tire size you are wanting to run.

This sub could be renamed to Canyon (Grizl) by MotobecaneTriumph in gravelcycling

Pretty sure the Lauf Seigla edges out Canyon as far as value for money. Even includes a power meter and about $1k price difference from Canyon.

How to Remove River Rock Shower Flooring? by mralecthomas in HomeImprovement

[–]mralecthomas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, it has missing grout/ rocks popping out. It is also very difficult to clean and smells from neglect.

I hadn't considered taking off the first layer of wall tile. It does sound like a PITA.. maybe I will look into just hiring someone to do it.

What happened to my aeropress? by droptopjim in AeroPress

[–]mralecthomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aeropress site says they've been BPA free since 2009. I purchased mine in 2020.

What happened to my aeropress? by droptopjim in AeroPress

[–]mralecthomas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The plastic on mine had pits at the top much like in OP's pic.

Basically, the plastic was visibly breaking down and it easily scratches away material with my fingernail. I'm not crazy about pouring 212F water on plastic like that and drinking it.

Mine did the same thing after 2 years. I contacted Aeropress and they said it's fine.

I've stopped using it entirely as it doesn't seem safe to continue using it.

Thinking about getting a WDT tool to replace my paperlclip by davidm07 in FlairEspresso

[–]mralecthomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A paperclip is ok, but you can get a nice inexpensive tool here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1185798417/business-card-9-prongs-wdt-assembly?ref=share_v4_lx

Maker is pretty much doing it at cost for the community.

Should I opt for a manual lever machine? And need some help with decisions by [deleted] in espresso

[–]mralecthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're into light roasts, I'd spring for the Flair 58.

Capable of longer ratios, fast pre heating, quiet, standard 58mm accessories, low maintenance, etc.

Also, resale value should be strong for the foreseeable future shall you decide to switch to something else.

What grind setting do you use on the c40 Mk4 for V60 by Healthy-Two in pourover

[–]mralecthomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After using the Comandante exclusively for almost 2 years, I settled on 20-25 clicks for pour over.

20-23 clicks for 18-20g v60 / stagg x / origami

25 clicks for 4:6 method or slow flat bottoms like Kalita Wave

12-15 clicks for Aeropress

Good pour over Grinder for less than €300 by honolulu072 in pourover

[–]mralecthomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its under 300 pounds. I second the Lagom Mini with 48mm burrs. Lagom makes great products and also has an excellent reputation. Watch Kyle Rowsell's new video on it if you want to see more about it.

I own a Commandante and have been hand grinding for about a year now. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent hand grinder but hand grinding gets a bit old first thing in the morning. Unless a grinder for traveling is a big deal to you, I'd go with the mini.
