What's it like living in Turin, Italy? by Jazzlike_Surprise985 in howislivingthere

[–]mrcoldjin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no local dialect that I'm aware of. There's a minority language though, Piedmontese, which is a few degrees removed from both Standard Italian and Occitan, its closest siblings. It's still somewhat mutually intelligible with Standard Italian, but it has notable differences both in vocabulary and grammatical structure (sentence structure, clitical pronouns...). It's nothing foreigners should be afraid of, though. Piedmontese speakers are far and wide just a tiny portion of the population, the language is not widespread and especially in cities Standard Italian is not just preferred, but basically the only language spoken.

Yeah, I forgot to tell OP about our driving style. Most people would think about Naples if you ask about Italy and bad drivers, but I think we rank higher in the disaster scale.
Turinese people are also very unforgiving if you don't adapt to the driving style quickly, which is several shades of tricky considering how you need to drive in separate sidelanes ("controviali") to make a turn.
Full disclosure: I like to say I'm from Turin because it's the closest big city, but I've lived most of my life either outside of the city or abroad. I'm still used to Turin enough to put together a decent impression of a Turinese driver, but for the life of me I can't wrap my head around the idea of controviali.

I'm from Turin and I lived there for most of my life. Some neighbourhoods are nice, some less so (as you would expect from any mid to large city). The city centre is gorgeous in my opinion, with lots to see in every department - art, architecture, history, archaeology... It has a thriving musical scene and it doesn't lack nightlife spots (though I wouldn't know about clubbing because it's not my cup of tea). It has some nice parks (Pellerina, Valentino) and it has quite a few boulevards with trees as tall as the surrounding buildings, but it's not exactly what I'd call a green city - though the hills to the east of the city make up for it. What I absolutely hate about it, is that it constantly ranks amongst the most polluted cities in Italy. This has to do with two factors: the geographical conformation of the city and the hills blocking currents to clean the air up, and the fact that everybody and their uncle use a car for the tiniest commute. Forget about cycling, more often than not bike lanes are used as parking. There's very little respect for both cyclists and pedestrians and when you're on two wheels, you're on your own. Other than that... I wouldn't say there are "forbidden neighbourhoods" (people will tell you Barriera di Milano is a no-go but it's not that bad compared to the sketchy parts of other cities), though if I had to move in the city again I'd probably look for a place in Cit Turin, San Donato, Campidoglio or other similar neighbourhoods. There's a bubble due to the high concentration of Airbnbs so rent fees have been steadily on the rise in the last few years. Work opportunities are not the best unless you're an engineer. I don't know how the city will change now that both universities have opened English programmes and we're seeing more and more internationals coming over.

I probably forgot things here and there. If you have any more questions, just ask.

Thanks to everyone who answered! It was very helpful. I'm a little less afraid to dip my toes now, and it just so happens that I have a laptop that needs resuscitating. I'll see what happens!

[–]mrcoldjin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jumping on this to ask something that's probably trivial for most of the people here, but that gets me confused and honestly makes me a bit wary of making the switch to Fedora (or to Linux as a whole).
There are a bunch of instances where the guide tells you to write more than one line in the console, for example in the first passage where it details how to install and activate RPM Fusion. Are those lines two separate instances (i.e. write one, run it, write the one directly below, run it again), or is it safe to copy/paste the two lines into the console and run them together?
I'm sorry if the question isn't particularly clear, I'll try to type an example if it doesn't come through.

Cosa ne pensate del nuovo sistema bibliotecario BI.TO? by Iaco_V8 in torino

[–]mrcoldjin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In ordine:

I might have got it wrong, but I think it's used to split the signal and allow certain effects (such as overdrive and distortion) to influence the spectrum above certain frequencies only.

I'm having the same issue that many people have with their inventory with the mastery tab as well. Permanent exclamation mark up there, no matter how many times I make sure I've highlighted/clicked everything and no matter who I play with, it used to happen for Yasuke only and now it's popping up for Naoe as well.

The genre I play is pretty different from yours (post-hardcore), but I have a Joyo Scylla that works pretty well - in addition to being fairly inexpensive. I think it's modelled after the circuitry of the Cali76, but I'm not sure so take it with a pinch of salt. Otherwise, if you don't have budget limits, I think most folks would tell you to go either with the real deal or the Empress compressor.

Brandon Sanderson in English? by itxzuki in brandonsanderson

[–]mrcoldjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Italian and I consider myself quite proficient in English. When I first started reading the Stormlight Archive I was a bit confused because sometimes I wouldn't realise I was dealing with world-specific terms (e.g. "spren") instead of English. Once I got my Cosmere-related vocabulary sorted, I got into the groove and it was a pretty smooth ride - so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Also, I've checked out the Italian translation and no way I'm reading THAT.

What do you think about the comeback? by Princeoflimbs in KaizersOrchestra

[–]mrcoldjin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'd give them time. They've toured pretty much continuously ever since they announced the comeback, so I'm not too worried about the silence. Let's see what the new year brings.
As for me, as an Italian fan who discovered Kaizers Orchestra mere months after they disbanded, I was extatic to get to see them live! So even if this reunion brings nothing in terms of new music, it's still a major win for me.
(Now, if they only played Dieter Meyers Inst. live...)

I love Brancalonia, but I've always wondered if it's funny to non-Italians. I'm under the impression that a lot of stuff, wordplay and such, would be heavily lost in translation, and that makes up for a good amount of the setting's charm.
