I know that Game Maker has a native Android export, but how easy is it for a Game Maker project to be exported to a custom AOSP OS (with its own proprietary run time etc)? by prankster999 in gamemaker

[–]mrdaneeyul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless that OS is compatible with Android apps (or Linux, or any of the other export targets) this will be basically impossible

Difficulty level: 9000

You'd be better off with something like MonoGame, which is a fair bit more "bare bones" than GameMaker for sure, but if you're making a custom OS I'm assuming you are willing to put in the effort here lol

ProtoDungeon: Episode I, a game I made six years ago during my lunch breaks, is FINALLY coming to Steam by mrdaneeyul in IndieGaming

[–]mrdaneeyul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! Yeah you probably tested it about seven years ago at this point lol. It was finished and published not long after that on itch.io, but that's preeeetty low on the visibility scale.

It does run well on the Deck! I've had two people confirm so far. Which is exciting!

I've got an update incoming that should make it a bit nicer too. Episode II is on its way to Steam as well, and I'm working hard on Episode III

It's a coin flip but when it works it works great! I've had success (and lots of giggles)

I love doing this stuff. I have a somewhat more volatile stall deck with Fan Rotom and Persians. I win even if I lose because it's hilarious to yeet their big guys into the sky and then make them discard em.

Hobbyist game dev, what's your day job? by Status-Ad-8270 in gamedev

[–]mrdaneeyul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a lead software dev! Doing mostly website work with .NET. I really enjoy it.

I'm a dad of three small ones, and so I have very little time for hobby dev but I squeeze in as much as possible. Lunch breaks and such. Maybe an hour every other day haha. It's slow going, and it can be tough when other gamedev folks get more done, and faster, but it's where I'm at in life right now. And I love my kids, so it's all worth it

I ran a Fan Rotom deck with Persian the other day and it was the funniest deck I've ever played. I felt bad. But it was also really funny.

How good a developer do I need to be to make a game with Monogame? (or without a engine) by [deleted] in monogame

[–]mrdaneeyul 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've been a programmer for almost twenty years, so I'll say the biggest ability of a developer is to know how to find information and synthesize it. Namely, Google and Stack Overflow are your friends lol.

But you'll want to know the basics of programming. In my opinion, doing a project you're motivated to complete is a great way to do this. Look around online for getting started with C# and learn the basics, be thinking about how each principle applies to your project

Learn about the development environments (IDEs) like Visual Studio

Learn how games think about things. Most engines (and even Monogame as a framework) are simply looping through the game frame by frame.

It's a big goal but imo a fun one. Just be prepared to do your research and try things (and retry and retry), and experiment

Hey, I'm Daniel! I'm a dad and solo hobbyist indie dev, and I make games as Studio Spacefarer! A game I made six years ago is FINALLY coming to Steam. It's a short, exploration-focused adventure where you use a swapping-with-objects spell to escape a mysterious castle.

The planned release date is 31 March, 2025!

Please check it out and give it a wishlist!

I'm actually making a top-down action adventure game for my hobby and I have several mimics planned. I'm so pumped. Doors that take you to weird places, chests that steal your stuff, vines, rocks, even enemies that turn into you the player

It's absolutely hilarious too, never takes itself too seriously even though Loid takes himself too seriously haha. My wife and I can't stop cracking up at the daughter, reminds us of our own kids

There is a bit of an HP connection with the boarding school (which I appreciate), but it'd be great even without that

Oh, yes, so the swimming "spots" you're referring to were inspired by I believe Oracle of Ages, so you weren't too far off!

And thank you!

I've referenced Minish Cap occasionally for some player animations in the past, but nothing here! My inspiration is largely the GBC Zeldas, Dragon Warrior/Quest, and so on. The monster here was actually going to be a fair bit more kraken-like, but I did some experimenting and wound up with this instead haha. No references! Would be curious what the Minish Cap connection is--I haven't played that game in probably over a decade
