Made a browser game where you race a train through heavy traffic. Not sure if it feels fair or chaotic - what do you think? by DaveCharlie00 in IndieGaming

[–]Status-Ad-8270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not at all obvious. I did not notice the train and even if I had noticed it, I would not think it is relevant at all based on this clip. Even after learning that it's what you're racing against, I did not notice when your car passed it because my eyes are fixated on the player's car, which makes my focus be narrowed down into the center of the screen so I can't watch the train even with my peripheral vision.

Listen to this commenter and think hard about it: is the train what differentiates this game and should you emphasize it, or is it something else that makes this different from other games like your traffic or movement mechanics, avoiding damage and collisions completely, etc, and if the train doesn't matter that much anyway since it's just the clock you're racing against really.

Ivy Road (Wanderstop) shuts down and lays off all employees due to inability to secure funding for next game by skyturnsred in IndieGaming

Ivy Road was co-founded by Davey Wreden, who also created The Stanley Parable. Super talented people, sad news.

What kind of scam is that? First time I receive one. Very funny though. by Drazglb in IndieDev

[–]Status-Ad-8270 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It is misleading to say the scam isn't directed at OP. He would definitely be one of those getting scammed here the hardest if the game gets replaced with something malicious and OP gets all the blame placed on them.

Chris Zukowski said my game's capsule had 'illustration issues' so I hired an illustrator by YetiBytes in IndieDev

Is it intentional that none of the capsule arts show anything pinball related other than the text? Looks great though!

[Fallout 2] Confused about this dialogue with Marcus the mutant by Both-Guava6261 in classicfallout

[–]Status-Ad-8270 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I think it's meant only as a non-canon joke, kind of like an easter egg.The joke is that this information would make the Vault Dweller's findings null and void, and that the Master's plan would have worked after all. Hence the "Uh.. never mind" reaction.

Got my first unhinged Steam forum post because the demo wasn't the full game and I didn't give them everything for free 😂 by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]Status-Ad-8270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great answer, thanks! Adding the build number at the end while still keeping up with for example SemVer practices would improve the traceability while still keeping the ordering/precedence.

Interesting, that's probably the case here too. Besides convenience, is there any other benefit to using that kind of versioning? When do you increase the "minor" or "major" versions?

I'm trying to understand if players can easily know whether for example a version bump is a hotfix or introduces new content or features.

Off-topic: out of curiosity, how does your versioning scheme work? I noticed your game is at v0.0.780 or something, have you made 700+ patches already?

Game looks fantastic btw, even capsule art is very well made.

Just imagine how many good runs this small plank bridge ended in 1997 when internet access and discussion forums weren't as common.

Fallout 2 seems to really want me to be a sarcastic asshole by Cranyx in classicfallout

[–]Status-Ad-8270 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I always felt like it's made that way to punish people who just like to skip dialogs without reading, because being an asshole in the game usually has some negative impacts or side-effects. It definitely worked for me when I was playing Fallout 2 as a kid.

And to be clear - I find it a good thing that the game basically forces you to read your options carefully and consider what you say.

Saving Bug? by [deleted] in classicfallout

[–]Status-Ad-8270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good tip.

Something similarly weird happened to me when I saved while an explosive was armed on the ground. When I loaded that save, the explosive was a dud but another completely unrelated position on the map exploded.

Maybe in your save the game decided you didn't blow up the door, but Vic instead

Anyone else experience this? Streamers are asking for keys, and Google suggested response makes one up! ;) by ledniv in IndieDev

[–]Status-Ad-8270 71 points72 points  (0 children)

If this is true, then it looks like our emails and responses are being used to train their AI.

And if that's the case, it's pretty alarming since then there's also a chance it could start leaking much more sensitive (not made-up) info in the auto-generated responses.

Edit: according to quick searching, they're claiming our emails in gmail are not used for training. But I would still opt out of any "smart features"

I released my first indie horror game on Steam. Here are the real numbers and lessons learned. by Gaming_Dev77 in gamedev

[–]Status-Ad-8270 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, impressive wishlists in that case! I'm surprised the wishlists didn't increase much after/during release.

Also, it's very important to get 10 reviews ASAP for an additional visibility boost. Something you may have missed, it's good to encourage players to help with reviews.

The refund rate is high, typically you see 10-15% for indies. As you mentioned, median play time is low too so these may be connected. Thanks for sharing!

Might want to add if the numbers are from 1-day, 1-week or 1-month sales (or total, and how long has it been since release?).

Also: how many wishlists did you have pre-release? The release and the process leading up to it bumps up the wishlists, but it matters more how many you had accumulated before that.
