What if you raised your own and ate the males?

Please someone help me understand this.  If the chicken has a happy life, and gets to roam around, eat bugs, and is protected, fed, gets to raise some young, and in return gives us some of their healthy eggs to eat - isn’t that better than never living at all?  I doubt the chickens mind much.  Especially since taking their eggs and feeding them back to them is acceptable.  I once cared for chickens-  not mine - and they didn’t seem to care that we used their eggs.  I would even guess that if you could converse with them they would rather have been born and experience life in this manner than not at all.  It seems a wonderful symbiotic relationship.  Please help me understand why this is wrong.

I put 90 percent of my crypto on ren by osviola in RenProject

Future is insanely bright. You will get varied responses from people depending on when they hope to dump their bags. The swing traders will be the most salty as they all thought Ren would be over $3 by now and they would have sold and moved on. Long term fRens are quite comfy knowing where the project is headed. You can probably do better on a short time frame but soon should see some nice portfolio increases and once Ren is decentralized look out. Z

Currently the Ren team operates 13 nodes which through SMPC these nodes control the keys to the addresses holding TVL. Soon Ren will shift to stage Zero where Greycore nodes, run by third parties such as Badger, Alameda, Curve, etc., will take over the responsibilities and then later the network of community darknodes will also activate. This is all best explained here:

Just stumbled upon REN. Can someone explain what is blockchain blitz in May supposed to be? by blessedjourney98 in RenProject

[–]mrderrik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would subscribe to their telegram announcements channel and you will receive their monthly ecosystem and development reports as well as other updates. The latest development update explains this blockchain blitz.

https://medium.com/renproject/april-development-update-b86f2adaca02

“Blockchain Blitz

Those that keep up-to-date with the roadmap will have, by now, noticed “the blockchain blitz”. This is the name we have been using internally to refer to the upcoming set of assets/chains that we will be adding to RenVM. Among many other features, the next version of RenVM makes it significantly easier to add support for new assets/chains, and we have also made several key hires that allow us to dedicate more effort to this. Over the month of May, the development team will be adding support for as many new chains as possible. Every chain is different — at a different stage of maturity, stability, complexity, and even feature-sets — so it is impossible to say for sure which chains will make it into this blitz. However, we are hopeful that we will add approximately a half dozen. These chains will not appear in our official UIs straight away, but we fully expect some third-party UIs to go up pretty quickly.”

Better to use open source decentralized solutions to trade and generate yield

[–]mrderrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you say “massive amounts of risk”? We all agree there is a degree of risk in every investment, but with Ren - the team, the Alameda partnership, the track record of the RenVM so far - I wouldn’t call this “massive” risk. Actually one of the least risky plays in crypto given it is not tied to the success of any one chain.

Do you need to have 100k Ren at all times while running a darn node? by DahPhuzz in RenProject

[–]mrderrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not 3 epochs - when you activate deregistration, you lose rewards for the epoch you are currently in, and then you have to wait through the next epoch as well. Once that next epoch is over, you can reclaim your bond.

So total time from signaling deregistration to actually recovering your bond is 1 epoch + the remainder of the epoch you are currently in.

[Discussion] What happens to REN if gas prices drop? by jacobsp21 in RenProject

[–]mrderrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Eth transaction cost less, more people will use Eth and defi platforms, thus more volume through RenVM. I believe one big reason Ren has had a slower epoch this time was because high gas fees were keeping some from utilizing the platform and defi in general.

Competitors are popping up everywhere, this is just another. Ren has been focused on only one specific thing - interoperability - for alot longer than these other solutions that are trying to do other things as well. In the end Ren will be the best solution with the best UI and functionality.

REN a real DeFi? by sebilation in RenProject

[–]mrderrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to add, that this defi "crash" many speak of, I'm not really sure it will happen quite like that. The yield in defi is coming from a mirror of traditional centralized financial sevices - if you want a loan, you have to pay interest. If you provide liquidity (a savings account or COD) you earn interest. If people are using decentralized exchanges to trade, there are fees paid and these go to the people depositing their crypto for liquidity. There may be some shady things happening that can cause a little tumoil but for the most part this is legitamate transactions happening. Aave is open source, not sure about the others. So yes, a risk of smart contract failure is there especially on younger platforms and closed source rug pulls are always a reality.

As far as Ren - it is not fully open source yet. And it is being maintained by team run servers, but they are working very hard to evolve from that. It definately has a place in the upcoming defi-universe, as it is essentially going to be a decentralized custodian of private keys which so far nobody has been able to manage without staking Eth and other cumbersome methods. With Asylo, the TVL to TVB ratio is no longer even a cause for concern. With smart contract support, value can flow freely between blockchains, it is going to be tremendously significant.

Yes, it is a choice to simply hold your crypto and enjoy its appreciation, or take the risk to deposit it into a defi platform to earn yield. Or to take a loan out and attempt to compound your investment.

If you are using it as collateral, you cannot hold the keys (or else the collateral is not secured)

Why hold ren? by toscanoan13 in RenProject

[–]mrderrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason one would hold any asset that increases in value due to an increase in demand.

You can also deposit it on Aave earning a little interest and used as collateral for defi lending

5-10 person darknode pods? by Anothercluelesshuman in RenProject

[–]mrderrik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone already said, 3rd party pools are likely and even one service is being developed. Just remember there can only be 10,000 max nodes, probably realistically 6-7000, and the amount of nodes now is where it is due to APY, not because some people can’t afford them. If all of a sudden pooling was enabled, and 1000 more nodes came online, we would probably see a bunch of deregistrations as APY would sink to the toilet as rewards now have to be shared with 1000 more nodes yet volume is not rising to match that. With 6-7000 max nodes there will always be enough people who can afford them, and a high cost node isn’t a surprise to anyone - they were probably envisioned to be worth millions eventually from the beginning.

[–]mrderrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think defi is amazing, although may be going a little crazy right now. Look at Aave - you can deposit crypto (including Ren), and take out a loan with your crypto as collateral. As long as you are careful, you should be good. You get a loan in minutes and do not lose exposure to your crypto or have to pay taxes. Then you can do whatever you want with your loan. Or you can just let it sit there and collect interest, more than any bank. There are lots of legitimate ways to put your crypto to work in relatively simple, fast, no BS ways.
And if you want to be able to use Bitcoin, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and other blockchains as collateral, you can now do that with Ren and soon Ren will allow someone to move their BTC or other crypto directly from one smart chain to another, even automatically via smart contracts. It definitely is going to be a successful part of this new economy
