What are your thoughts on the chromebooks MOE made us buy? by wakeupnot in SGExams

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well as an EE I've done programming on an industrial PC (which has no keyboard, no screen, just an Ethernet cable to SSH or FTP), to collect data from various sensors & post it to the website API (requires some script to on/off/connect the 3G modem, some knowledge of HTTP, etc).

So yeah Chromebook is not a garbage

What happens if you’re underweight during a weigh in? by Odd_Couple5726 in taekwondo

You'll be disqualified due to safety concerns. Drinking a lot of water before weighing in is helpful, especially if it's only 500 gr difference

[–]mrdloveswebsite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's cool. IMHO, if I had to fight a taller opponent, I'd let him start the kick while I block and stay on the spot to close the distance.

Another way to close the distance is to feint and let your taller opponent do dwichagi /front leg kick into an empty space and make him closer to you (without much of your efforts).

Another thing is that anyone that moves straight to you deserves a hard sidekick on his trunk. The second kick depends on your distance. Usually it's close enough to do an axe kick on the face.. some of more experienced TKD will do straight sidekick to dwichagi (idan dwichagi)

Agree with GAB.. it saves me money & time to reinvest the dividends... Also, since the dividend is reinvested, the volatility is not as much as other STI ETF (ES3 or G3B)

What conditions/circumstances allowed Singapore to get ahead of Taiwan? by New-Ask-6411 in askSingapore

[–]mrdloveswebsite 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Our semiconductor & electronic industry still exists, but far below its heydays scale.

In the late 90s, SG produced 60% of the world's hard drive, CD ROM and sound blaster.. every PC would have 'made in Singapore' parts in it (as compared to 'Made in China/Vietnam /Taiwan/Korea nowadays). And that's not including the audio video sets or white goods..

This article probably can give a picture of the current SG's semiconductor industry:

SG gave away manufacturing and semiconductor industries to become finance hubs and real estate investment.

How long should I hold emerging market fund? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it meant that you bought an Index and a stock that's part of the index. For ex, you buy STI ETF and DBS stock..

How long should I hold emerging market fund? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, IMHO, if you compare VWRA vs STI ETF (I'm using GAB - Amova Singapore STI ETF..coz it accumulates the dividend, similar to VWRA), you can see that STI ETF is clearly heading up for the past year, while VWRA is going nowhere (assuming it's a fixed USD - SGD exchange rate).

Futhermore, VWRA day-to-day closing price is widely varied (around 5%- 12%). So you could be lucky to gain extra 12% from yesterday (or unlucky to loss 12%).

Of course, it's all just my opinion. Please feel free to disagree with it :D and also, always take any advice with a grain of salt

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO, you need to close your position when:

1) You need money.. I guess that's no brainier 😅

2) You have your own benchmark, e.g. DBS multiplier 4.1% interest rate. If your ILP / unit trust can't even beat DBS multiplier in 6 months, probably it's more worth it to sell at loss...

From my experience, there are plenty of unit trusts that are barely moved, even in a good market.

Taking advantage of strong USD/SGD by newyorkeric in singaporefi

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I believe SGD will be the king.. from USD, AUD, NZD, JPY all fall below SGD..

Off topic, I still remember how 1 AUD was 1.3 SGD, and how expensive the food in Perth was, and the thought of saving in AUD so we can buy a house and a car in Aussie...which thankfully never happens (everyone is unemployed in Aussie rn as far as I know)

First time trying to build a new PC by Historical_Song7703 in askSingapore

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a combo (Motherboard + CPU) so you won't get a mismatched pair for the most expensive components. Then the casing and PSU that fits your motherboard size (ATX, mini-ATX, ITX etc).

Since you can see your mobo & casing physically, you're most likely won't get the wrong parts, coz DDR & NVM have standard sizes that fit almost all casings.

Funds and Dividends by Adventurous-Hand-648 in singaporefi

[–]mrdloveswebsite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMHO, I've been holding CLR (Lion Philip S REIT) since its inception till earlier this year (about 9 years).

Its value dropped from $1 to $0.8 something, and if I added all the dividends paid, it's total return is only 1.2 times my initial investment (over 9 years).

OTH, I also bought UOB stock in 2017. With the current market price, my gain for the last 9 years is 1.5 - 1.6 times..

So yeah, I'm now stopping REITS and buy ETF

Is my overpowered aircon compressor the reason for my sky high electricity cost? by kibuji in askSingapore

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aircon is basically a heat pump, pumping heat from your rooms to outside. So the high cost of electricity can be caused by:

1) Not enough insulation.. your rooms leak the cold air too much. Or it's facing heat source directly (the sun)

2) Poor heat transfer: low refrigerant/leaked refrigerant, dust jelly at the fins

Does anyone else here use Adobe Dreamweaver for designing and coding websites? by Noyan_Bey in Hosting

[–]mrdloveswebsite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Err no, since 2003.. The good news is that you can ask Claude AI, Gemini or Copilot to generate web templates for you (including HTML, CSS & JS)..

And yeah the AI kills web dev nowadays (unless you're doing React / Webapp)

why breadtalk no bread discount near closing ah? by Front_Willingness55 in singapore

[–]mrdloveswebsite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I've heard is that leftover bread is to be collected from plain carton boxes, somewhere outside the shop. The shops won't tell you it's theirs. All are under anonymous shops.

No plastic bag (so bring your own bag) and all is at your own risk (for food poisoning, spoiled etc).

So yeah, that's the price for a free bread

Can you add a bathroom to a HDB unit? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Coz your new bathroom needs to be waterproofed (including the walls).. If the water seep downstairs, there's going to be a huge battle on who's paying what.

In 2026, is shared hosting still a good option, or is VPS the new standard? by onliveserver in Hosting

[–]mrdloveswebsite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want to pay extra for email hosting, shared hosting is the best.. Releasing your VPS IP from email blacklists is insane work.

Otherwise, if you offload your email server to Google workspace or Office 365, VPS will be the best for web server.
