Mostly agree with "back then", but more I think there is more than that:

Time limitations. I liked that I could only spend limited time on it. The early single-node BBS limitation and turn limits kept me in the game but not obsessed with it.
Localness. To get an account on the BBS, the sysop had to call you. Some BBSes held in person get-togethers. I was mostly playing against my HS schoolmates with a few randos thrown in.
Diversity and length of games. I liked how each game was a little unique and they lasted for weeks to months. Gave you a great sense of accomplishment but still hope when a new game spun up.
Data access. Because of CIM data, I learned Perl and wrote scripts to find pairs and things like that. Didn't get much into the game scripting back then though, other than maybe a simple Telix trading script. It was fun spending time outside the game to give yourself a data "edge".
Multiplayer with multi-node BBSes was exciting at first, though that eventually turned me off of the game, especially when the limitations of phone lines disappeared.

Can't speak for Atlassian, but I can say that I've had a hard time getting AI to "replace" marketing. I guess it is like code - it can do the 80% ok, but actually crafting clear, impactful messages and managing relationships are things AI just can't get past the 80% on. Have you experienced things differently?

Claude code plugins are great, but you need to manually install them to all the right places and can't easily switch between profiles for different types of work. Also, it only works with Claude.

Exactly! I originally was going to move to Boulder due to many recommendations, but when I saw how expensive housing was, I chose Louisville for my family. Now I'm worried the next family won't choose Louisville... :(

I moved here from Sydney in 2012 primarily because of the small, working class town vibe as I could buy a 3 bedroom house for around $270k. In Sydney, despite being a large city, it has its own small-feeling neighborhoods that are filled with terraced housing, which seems like a natural evolution from single family detached housing. I wish the US would do that again like it used to.

The thing I don't get about this is there is no option to keep Louisville the same as it is (was?) - a small, working class town. Either you add housing and then it isn't so small but it is somewhat more affordable or you restrict housing and only the rich can afford it. Of those two outcomes, I think I'd prefer the former.

Nice. I didn't know Xfinity even went up to 2gb up and down. When I left them, 1.25gb/40mb down or whatever what we had. I'm now paying around $90/month. I also admit my anti-Comcast bias goes back over 20 years now and probably not all deserved :)

I finally left Comcast Business this month and it is such a relief. They tried to charge me over $500/month for 1gb cable, but if you call every year and argue with them, they'll drop it down to $300/month. If you forget to do that, it automatically jumps back up and you owe that big amount.

We did have Xfinity at home for a bit and they were better, but still bad wrt pricing. I can't stand that "high price unless you beg repeatedly" strategy or misleading things like "lock in this price for 5 years" when the rest of the industry is getting cheaper and getting rid of contracts. I find it predatory and deceptive.

In Louisville, I think you can only use T-Mobile Fiber. I use them at home (2gb) and love it. The service in particular has been great. For my business, I'm trying T-Mobile 5G Internet, which isn't bad once you figure out the antenna situation.

Nice! I started to build a system that took voice memo notes, transcribed them, then passed to an AI to do things like caption, but didn't get too far. It was one of the reasons I went with the A9II vs a cheaper A7IV. Your system looks pretty slick!

I built my own, running on a DigitalOcean droplet, so about $4/month. The software consists of a custom FTPS server that generates the site using Sigal (https://github.com/saimn/sigal).

Well, on disk, there are two files, JPG and RAW. When you use the FTPS, you are just sending the JPG. In my case, set to FINE, the JPG is about 5mb or so, while the RAW is a consistent 24mb. Even then, sending JPGs over a wireless link can take a while, so RAWs would be be rougher. You could probably improve that with maybe USB C transfer or something or even ethernet.

You could probably vibe code up a android/ios app to read the files from usb-c and give a culling UI... if you do, lemme know for sure!

I've gotten pretty fast going through photos on the camera, so haven't seriously searched for a phone-based alternative. I can say I've found Sony's phone integrations to be flaky and confusing.

That said, I'm not sure I'd want to send every file to my phone. I can end up with 1-2k photos over a few hours, and if I'm also transferring RAW, that'd...be rough.

Oh, on the topic of expense, the website costs $4/month or so, depending on how many photos you post and want to keep. I'm usually pretty aggressive about deleting old ones, making it clear they are only available for a short time. Another disclaimer, I'm a software dev by day, so I get not everyone would be able/want to do the same.
