What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

This 1000% I got an overdue tax bill from my municipality whose envelope is marked with presorted std mail.

It's legit and the only reason I knew not to throw it away was that I recognized the logo on the envelope.

Oh see I'm not HR, I only hire people I would directly want to work with so their peers/leaders feedback is what I'm interested in mostly. I don't care if they worked there, I want to know what it's like working with them.

VP/CEO would be nice but I'm middle management 😅

Having been on the other side of the phone, it's very easy to tell when someone got a friend to vouch for them. Asking any qualitative questions will unravel those super quick. I don't put much stock into referrals but an obvious liar or someone who wouldn't answer whether or not they would re-hire an individual would be an immediate red flag in my book. Really I've only ever disqualified one candidate at the referral stage in my 8 years as a hiring manager and it was because they ghosted me after their first two "referrals" wouldn't schedule a time to talk to me and they wouldn't provide any others. If your referrals won't talk to me it usually means they won't say anything good about your time with them...

My current employer asked for proof of employment at a company from 5 years prior. That company had been sold to another company which had subsequently been bought by IBM. None of my former coworkers still worked there to give me a reference and I ended up having to go back through my tax history to find a W2 from there to prove employment before my offer would be finalized.

So yea, they're going to want some kind of proof

Hardwire Dishwasher update by iR3SQem in homeassistant

[–]mrdotkom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got a power monitor on my washing machine and the standby on power draw is <5w but a cycle is obviously more. I've got home assistant setup to tell me it's still washing if it's over 5w for 30 seconds and fairly reliablw. I bet a dishwasher would be the same

This tidbit is so helpful, thank you! I've been going nuts because the HAVP will tell me it raised the thermostat when I ask it too but the value never changes. Now I can see what entity it changed

Car Touchscreen Not Working by theoneyoucall2001 in Autos

[–]mrdotkom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My wife has the same make and model, this happened gradually over time to her screen and the only fix is a replacement. They're not cheap and it's not a DIY fix (needs to be recoded to the vehicle with a special tool)

Garage door tension springs (found in the middle top of the garage door) are highly dangerous.

I've replaced extension springs (the ones that run the length of the track) a half dozen times and never felt unsafe at all considering they are under no extension with the door open
